The state government's draft proposal—the Karnataka Misinformation and Fake News (Prohibition) Bill, 2025—placed before the cabinet last week, has raised concern among stakeholders. According to the bill, the government looks to criminalise and punish those who spread misinformation. The draft bill says that companies and social media platforms may also be held liable for fake news shared through their networks.Under the draft bill, social media users found guilty can face two to five years in jail. If one posts fake news on social media platforms, they can be imprisoned for up to seven years and fined up to Rs 10 lakh. Abetment of such offences will also attract a two-year jail term, the 11-page draft read.The draft includes formulating a state 'fake news regulatory authority' tasked with a broad mandate to monitor and regulate the content disseminated on social media platforms. 'Prohibit publication of content amounting to disrespect of Sanatan symbols and beliefs on social media platforms. Prohibit publication of content promoting superstition,' the draft bill accessed by ET read.Government's takePriyank Kharge, state IT-BT minister, told ET that the document is an opinion of a few individuals in the law department and will be thoroughly discussed by the home and IT departments before moving forward.Defending the Congress government's move, Kharge said, "We are not deciding whether it is misinformation or fake news. We are getting professionals to do that. We would love it if even the Editors Guild of India or the Press Council of India, or anybody else, wants to be a part of it."He added that the government is not trying to change any policy. 'We're just trying to connect the dots that already exist and make a bill out of it."The minister emphasised that even Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said that misinformation creates havoc and is a threat to democracy.The new authority's core functions would include ensuring a complete ban on the spread of fake news. It also talks about content that is abusive, obscene, anti-feminist, or insulting to the dignity of women. The new body will have the power to recommend punitive action under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, against individuals or entities found guilty.When asked if the government would support such a bill at a central level, Kharge, referring to the Broadcast and Digital Bill, said, "We are not doing anything like tampering with the IT Act. We are merely categorising any public interest information as true or false. And we are tracking it up with reasons why we think it is false.

NEW DELHI: AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi has expressed keenness to join the Mahagathbandhan alliance and contest the upcoming Bihar assembly elections together "to prevent the BJP-led NDA from returning to power." Owaisi, however, said that he tried to enter the opposition alliance in 2020, but talks fell through. "Our state president, Akhtarul Iman, has spoken to some leaders in the Mahagathbandhan and has categorically stated that we do not want the BJP or NDA to come back to power in Bihar. Now, it is up to these political parties that also want to prevent the NDA's return. Five years ago, I had also tried personally, but nothing came out of it," Owaisi said. "This time too, our state president is making an effort. But it is up to them. We will be contesting elections in Seemanchal and outside Seemanchal as well. If they are not ready, I am prepared to contest everywhere. Wait for the right time — it is too early to announce the exact number of seats," he added. Earlier, party state president and sole MLA Akhtarul Iman said that the party has conveyed its willingness to both RJD chief Lalu Prasad and the Congress leadership. "We are waiting for their response. We are ready to bury the hatchet despite the fact that the RJD took away our four MLAs. We want to move past these issues to achieve the bigger goal of defeating the NDA," he said. "Like-minded people must come under one umbrella if we are to oust the NDA from power in Bihar. The RJD and Congress might be interested in power, but our intent is to fight for justice," he added. In the 2020 assembly elections, AIMIM altered the political dynamics in the state after winning five seats in the Seemanchal region. The party contested 14 of its 20 seats in the state as part of the Grand Democratic Secular Front (GDSF) and won five: Amour, Jokihat, Bahadurganj, Baisi, and Kochadhaman. The region holds strategic importance for the Mahagathbandhan's ambitions to form the government, as both the Congress and RJD have traditionally relied on strong support from the Yadav and Muslim communities. Later in 2022, four of AIMIM's five MLAs joined RJD. AIMIM was subsequently blamed by both the Congress and the RJD for splitting the "secular" vote. The assembly election is scheduled for the end of the year, where a high-stakes battle is expected. The National Democratic Alliance (NDA)- consisting of the Janata Dal (United) led by Bihar CM Nitish Kumar and the Bharatiya Janata Party — will face off against the Mahagathbandhan, which includes the Congress, RJD and Left parties.

Opposition boycotts high tea event on eve of Monsoon Session; calls Maharashtra Govt dishonest
The opposition parties in Maharashtra on Sunday (June 29, 2025) announced a boycott of the traditional high tea event of the State Government on the eve of the legislature's Monsoon Session citing rampant corruption, unpopular policies and misuse of funds. Confirming the development, Leader of Opposition in the Legislative Council Ambadas Danve of the Shiv Sena (UBT) said the boycott is a mark of protest against a "dishonest Government". "From the forced implementation of the Shaktipeeth Expressway to the failure to provide buses to MSRTC, non-payment of dues to private contractors, and injustice in the Vaishali Hagawane [dowry harassment-suicide] case in Pune, this Government has lost the moral right to seek cooperation. Why should we meet the government that is imposing a third language [Hindi] on Standard I," he said. His colleague and former Minister Aaditya Thackeray attacked the Mahayuti government of Devendra Fadnavis for corruption in school admissions. "The first list for 11th standard admissions appears to be tainted with corruption. There is reason to believe that school education minister Dada Bhuse may be involved," he alleged. Mr. Thackeray also slammed the State Government for "tacitly backing" the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC), which he claimed was imposing "unjust" fines to the tune of ₹12.50 crore on motorists using the Mumbai-Pune Expressway. The MMRDA, which is helming the project, also announced a reduction in the cost of the project subsequently. "Why was the cost inflated in the first place? The intention was to misuse the money to possibly buy MLAs or for other nefarious purposes," he alleged.

High command holds the cards When asked about Siddaramaiah 's son and MLC Yathindra Siddaramaiah brushing off the leadership change as mere speculation, Hussain said that Congress high command had decided on government formation after the 2023 assembly polls. "We were all together in Delhi then. Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi , and Mallikarjun Kharge made the decision. Everyone knows that. They will take the next decision too—we'll have to wait and watch," he said. Hussain also took the sting out of Rajanna's "revolution" comment, saying that allowing a deserving person cannot be called a revolution. "What does revolution mean? Changes are common in politics. When the time comes, the high command will decide who should be given the responsibility. A suitable person, capable of providing good administration in today's circumstances, will get the opportunity and do their duty. There is an expectation for change, but it cannot be called a revolution," he said. No revolt, no split, just transition Highlighting that Congress is in power in the state, he said, "if another party were overthrowing this government, that could be called a revolution. But nothing like that is happening—the government is strong and has a clear majority." Hussain further dismissed Rajanna's claims about multiple power centres within the Congress, saying, "There is only one power centre—the party high command." "There is discipline and commitment in the Congress, and everyone follows it. People from different communities have worked for the party, and they have sacrificed and fought for it. In today's situation, there is an expectation for change, and that change will happen—but it cannot be called a revolution," he claimed.
