Nova Scotia Power temporarily shut off power in parts of Cape Breton to carry out repairs

As many as 11,000 Nova Scotia Power customers in parts of Cape Breton were without power Sunday after the utility temporarily shut off electricity to carry out repairs. This morning, around 3,000 customers were without power in the Whycocomagh area. To fix the power problem there, the utility had to shut off electricity to a larger area that included Chéticamp, Inverness, Mabou and Baddeck. Those areas had also lost power Saturday, with around 9,000 customers affected. The planned outage began at noon AT and was expected to last two hours. But as of 3:30 p.m., the utility's outage map showed that power had been restored to all affected areas. In a post on X, the utility said the additional outage was being done to ensure power could be safely restored to all areas. Asked what the cause of the initial outage was, a Nova Scotia Power spokesperson said the company was focused on restoring power. Bonny MacIsaac, warden for the Municipality of the County of Inverness, said the outage coincided with the busy Inverness Gathering weekend. She said some businesses had to close as a result of the outage. When she spoke with CBC News Sunday morning, she said some had not reopened. This included the only grocery store in the community of Inverness.

Cambridge's Gaslight District brings winter vibes to summer heatwave

As a heatwave continues to grip Waterloo Region, the Gaslight District in Cambridge offered residents a cool escape Sunday with a unique event that brought a taste of winter to the heart of summer. The one-day-only event, dubbed Frozen Heatwave, transformed the popular downtown area into a snowy-themed celebration, complete with synthetic ice skating, complimentary skate rentals and classic winter films playing on the big screen. In a social media post, organizers said the goal was to bring 'all the fun of cold weather, with none of the frostbite.' The free event drew families and residents looking for a refreshing way to beat the heat. Frozen Heatwave wraps up at 6 p.m.

Environment Canada issues heat warning for southern Ontario and Quebec

Montreal's air quality dropped to worst in the world on July 26, 2025, as wildfire smoke from the prairies drifted into the city. (Daniel J. Rowe/CTV News) Environment Canada says a multi-day heat event for parts of Ontario and Quebec is set to begin on Sunday with a humidex that will make it feel like it's as high as 42 C. The weather agency issued the heat warning on Saturday afternoon, saying people can expect daytime highs ranging between 30 and 34 C. It says overnight low temperatures are expected to range between 19 and 23 C, providing little relief from the heat. The heat wave is expected in all of southern Ontario along Lake Erie and Lake Ontario and across a stretch of Quebec to the Trois-Rivières area. It's yet another heat warning for Ontario this summer, where last month temperature records in many parts of the province were broken during an extreme heat wave. During heat warnings, people are advised to drink water often, watch for signs of heat exhaustion and to check on older adults and those at risk of heat illness. This report by The Canadian Press was first published July 26, 2025.
