Galatasaray accuse Jose Mourinho of ‘racist statements', intend to initiate criminal proceedings

New York Times25-02-2025
Galatasaray have accused Jose Mourinho of making 'racist statements' and intend to initiate criminal proceedings against the Fenerbahce head coach.
The two Istanbul rival clubs, who occupy the top two places in the Turkish Super Lig table, played out a 0-0 draw in the league on Monday.
However after the game, in praising Slovenian referee Slavko Vincic who was drafted in by the Turkish Football Federation after a request from both clubs, Mourinho criticised the Galatasaray bench for their reaction to what he perceived as a dive in the early stages of the game.

The 62-year-old said: 'I have to thank the referee. After the big dive in the first minute and their (Galatasaray's) bench jumping like monkeys on top of each other.
'If it was a Turkish referee, you would have a yellow card after one minute, and after five minutes, I would have to change him. Thankfully, it was a perfect experience for him.'
Hours after the game at RAMS Park concluded, Galatasaray released a statement that read: 'Since the commencement of his managerial duties in Turkey, Fenerbahce manager Jose Mourinho has persistently issued derogatory statements directed towards the Turkish people.
'Today, his discourse has escalated beyond merely immoral comments into unequivocally inhumane rhetoric.

'We hereby formally declare our intention to initiate criminal proceedings concerning the racist statements made by Mourinho, and shall accordingly submit official complaints to (governing bodies) UEFA and FIFA.
'Furthermore, we shall diligently observe the stance adopted by Fenerbahce — an institution professing to uphold 'exemplary moral values' — in response to the reprehensible conduct exhibited by their manager.'
Galatasaray striker Victor Osimhen, who is on loan from Napoli, reposted Galatasaray's statement on social media, adding the 'Say No To Racism' logo on his Instagram story.
Fenerbahce say Mourinho's comments have been taken 'completely out of context and deliberately distorted' and they are weighing up legal action of their own.

'As any rational person can see and understand these expressions used by Jose Mourinho during the match to describe the overreaction of the opposing team's technical committee to the referee's decisions cannot be associated with racism in any way,' a statement released on Tuesday read.
'Trying to portray this discourse as a racist discourse is a completely malicious approach. We inform the public that we will use our legal rights regarding this incapable slander, that aims to take the competition off the field, change and manipulate the agenda.'
The game between the fierce rivals was halted after 52 minutes due to fans throwing flares onto the pitch. There was also a heavy police presence at the stadium in Istanbul, with an estimated 30,000 officers deployed to deter crowd trouble.
Galatasaray are top of the Super Lig, six points clear of second-placed Fenerbahce.

Sixers' Tyrese Maxey posts that he's back in the gym putting in work

Philadelphia 76ers star Tyrese Maxey is one of the more maniacal workers in the league. The former No. 21 pick of the 2020 draft has answered any and all questions about his game as he has morphed into an All-Star in this league and is considered as one of the top stars in this game. The 2024-25 season was down for him in terms of his shooting. While he did average 26.3 points, 6.1 assists, and 3.3 rebounds, his shooting numbers of 43.7% overall and 33.7% from deep were below his career norms. That's likely due to a number of factors from not having Joel Embiid and Paul George too much around him as well as injuries of his own. Either way, Maxey is back in the gym looking to take another step forward. He posted a boomerang on his Instagram story as he was at the team's practice facility very early in the morning. For the Sixers to have a shot in the 2025-26 season, they will need a clean bill of health while also getting their star trio all on the same page. They only played 18 games together in 2024-25 and finished 15 of them.

Shannon Sharpe will not return to ESPN as a commentator on ‘First Take'

Shannon Sharpe will not be returning to ESPN, according to a person with knowledge of the situation who is not authorized to publicly discuss it. The development comes weeks after the former NFL star settled a $50-million lawsuit that accused him of rape. Attorney Tony Buzbee, whose firm represented the woman who filed the civil lawsuit against Sharpe earlier this year, announced the settlement on July 18 in a statement posted on Instagram. Sharpe's legal team said at the time that Buzbee's statement should be considered the 'final word' on the matter. Terms of the settlement have not been disclosed. The lawsuit was filed on April 20 in Clark County in Nevada. Sharpe's accuser sought damages for claims of assault, sexual assault, battery, sexual battery and intentional infliction of emotional distress after multiple alleged non-consensual sexual encounters in her Las Vegas apartment between October and January. The sports media personality has denied the allegations. He announced days after the lawsuit was filed that he was temporarily stepping away from his duties as a commentator on ESPN's 'First Take' but would return in time for the 2025 NFL season. At that time, an ESPN spokesperson said in a statement emailed to The Times that 'this is a serious situation, and we agree with Shannon's decision to step away.' Sharpe has remained on his popular podcasts 'Club Shay Shay' and 'Nightcap.' The Athletic was the first to report that Sharpe won't be returning to ESPN. The network declined to comment for this story.

Charley Hull Delivers Masterclass With Take On Glory vs. Fame Debate

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Charley Hull is one of the faces of women's golf worldwide, and her star has shone both on and off the court. Not to go too far back in time, the Englishwoman just made a cameo in "Happy Gilmore 2" alongside a handful of fellow golf stars. However, her fame in the golf world hasn't diminished her hunger for glory and desire to win tournaments. This will likely make her even more of a fan favorite. Speaking on the topic from Royal Porthcawl, where the AIG Women's Open will be played starting Thursday, Hull delivered a powerful lesson on achieving sporting glory versus achieving fame. Charley Hull of England puts on a jacket on the third hole during the final round of the ISPS HANDA Women's Scottish Open 2025 at Dundonald Links Golf Course on July 27, 2025 in Troon, Scotland. MoreIt's a debate where the line between chasing fame and pursuing results tends to be blurry for some athletes. "I want to see my name on the trophy. I don't care about being up in the headlines," Hull said, according to the transcripts of her pre-tournament presser. "I don't really read the headlines. I literally go out there and play golf and play good and hopefully get my name on the trophy." A reporter asked if she feels she bears some of the popularity within women's golf, to which Hull responded in the humblest way. "I don't know, I don't feel like I've got to carry anything. I need to just be me at the end of the day." The truth is Hull's popularity is undeniable. She has more than 95,000 fans on X and nearly 800,000 on Instagram. An undetermined number also follows her on Passes. But her stature as a professional golfer is as high as, if not higher than, her fame. Hull has been among the best players in the world for the last decade, a role she has cemented despite not winning as many titles as some of her peers. The Englishwoman has won two LPGA Tour events and four on the Ladies European Tour. She hasn't won any major championships but has finished second at least once in three of the five majors. Further proof of this is that Hull was ranked seventh in the world rankings just over a year ago. She has been a constant presence in the world's top 10, a status she lost midway through the current season, which has not been her best (13 tournaments, three top 10s, two of them in the LET). As if that wasn't enough, Hull has also been a star in the Solheim Cup, with three wins and one draw in seven appearances.
