Des Hasler addresses talk he is about to be AXED by the Gold Coast Titans - 'unfounded and all speculation'

Daily Mail2 days ago
Under-pressure Gold Coast coach Des Hasler has hit back at talk his coaching days at the Titans are numbered, labelling the rumours 'unfounded.'
The Titans sit in 17th spot on the NRL ladder after finishing 14th last year, with two-time premiership winner Hasler not enjoying the success he was hired to achieve after Justin Holbrook was moved on in 2023.
There have been reports about Hasler's future in recent days, with one suggesting he would retire at season's end and depart the Titans - even if the club decides not to fire him.
Asked about the speculation, the coach was quick to respond.
'I can probably knock that on the head straight away,' Hasler said.
'It's unfounded. It's all unfounded and it is all speculation and that's all I can really comment on.'
The veteran mentor was then asked whether he expected to be on deck for the final season of his three-year deal in 2026.
'I'm contracted for that. Let's move on. Next question,' he retorted.
Hasler said the speculation about him had not been a distraction ahead of the home derby clash with Brisbane on Sunday afternoon, as he was quizzed about why his coaching tenure at the club wasn't working out.
'I wouldn't say it's not working,' he said.
'Obviously the results haven't shown that, but everybody at the club is working really hard and that's the part you don't see.'
Meanwhile, the Broncos will rest NSW prop Payne Haas as they target a fifth consecutive win.
Haas has been managing a lower back complaint all season and coach Michael Maguire has taken the opportunity to rest him.
The Broncos staged a thrilling 22-18 comeback win over Canterbury last week without their State of Origin players - and ominously for the Titans, key trio Reece Walsh, Gehamat Shibasaki and Pat Carrigan will all return to club footy.
Veteran Ben Hunt was also named to play after a nine-week absence with a hamstring injury, and will slot in at hooker.
It will also mark the first time Brisbane's first-choice spine - comprised of electric fullback Walsh, pivot Ezra Mam, halfback Adam Reynolds and Hunt - have played together all season.
Earlier this week, Titans veteran Kieran Foran confirmed 2025 will be his final season in the NRL.
'Foz' made his first grade debut with the Sea Eagles in 2009, and won a premiership two years later in the halves alongside Daly Cherry-Evans.
He has gone onto chalk up 309 appearances at five NRL clubs - as well as play 31 games for New Zealand.

Fit-again Skelton welcomes Wallabies underdogs tag

Australia lock Will Skelton says the Wallabies are relishing their underdog tag going into the first Test against the British and Irish Lions in Brisbane."I love it," he said "We love it. We are, like Joe said, we're worried solely on ourselves. Lions have played some great footy, and we want to showcase what we can do on Saturday. "If you put pressure on any team, they can crack."Skelton, who confirmed that he has recovered from a calf twinge that kept him out of the Wallabies' warm-up win over Fiji, also reflected on the influence one-time Saracens team-mate Owen Farrell could have on the tourists' came off the bench in Saturday's 48-0 win over an Australia/New Zealand invitational side."I know how much of a competitor he is," added Skelton. You could see how well he played on the weekend after a few months off."He's like every great ten that I've had. He's demanding. He has high standards, and that's what you want in a team. People take it the wrong way, but that's how he feels. He needs to project himself; he's got history, and it's worked for him."

Business picking up in Brisbane

Test week has finally arrived, and on a gloriously sunny day in Brisbane it feels like business is picking Australia side is not stacked full of big guns, but two of their biggest - Joseph-Aksuso Suaalii and Will Skelton - both spoke to the media today, a reminder of the firepower the Wallabies do possess. Lions captain Maro Itoje also spoke to us as he reiterated Henry Pollock's desire for a 3-0 clean big news overnight has been the selection of a trio of Scottish players from across the ditch in New Zealand, echoing the controversial 'Geography Six' selection from 2017. The trio are all worth their place here, especially the outstanding Darcy Graham who was very unlucky to miss out in the first place and will join the squad straight away. Ewan Ashman and Rory Sutherland will play for Scotland against Samoa before heading to Australia, with their selections to provide extra reinforcements to face the First Nations & Pasifika XV on Tuesday and protect the Test while the Lions insist geography didn't play a big part in the selections, spare a thought for someone like Dewi Lake. If Wales had been playing in Fiji instead of Japan last weekend, would he have got a call up?Meanwhile Itoje insists the players will be warmly welcomed into the Lions fold, as opposed to eight years ago when the 'Geography Six' were not treated as legitimate members of the squad by some members of the Lions party.

Scotland trio called into Lions squad for Australia clash

The British and Irish Lions have called up Scotland trio Rory Sutherland, Ewan Ashman and Darcy Graham ahead of their series against Australia. The Lions' squad has swelled to 44 players with the latest additions, who are being brought in to provide cover that will prevent key Test personnel from backing up in next Tuesday's match against a First Nations & Pasifika XV. The eighth match on tour takes place before the second Test against the Wallabies in Melbourne on July 26. Prop Sutherland, hooker Ewan Ashman and wing Darcy Graham have all been summoned from Scotland's tour of New Zealand. Read more: Graham will link up with the Lions in Brisbane on Monday while Sutherland and Ashman will arrive in Melbourne on Sunday with Scotland facing Samoa in Auckland the previous day. Sutherland made two Test appearances for the Lions in South Africa four years ago. Head coach Andy Farrell named a 38-man squad in May but since arriving in Australia full-back Jamie Osborne, hooker Jamie George and prop Tom Clarkson have been added.
