England's Duckett says mindset change behind Test success

England opener Ben Duckett reverse-sweeps on his way to 149 in the first Test against India at Headingley (Darren Staples)
Ben Duckett believes a change of mindset has inspired his successful return to Test cricket after a brilliant century laid the foundation for England's remarkable win in their series opener with India.
Duckett's commanding 149 was the key innings as England successfully chased an imposing total of 371 to win by five wickets in the first Test at Headingley on Tuesday.

It was another milestone moment for 30-year-old Duckett since returning to the England side in December 2022.
His 30 appearances in his second spell as a Test cricketer have yielded 2,511 runs at an average of 47.37 and a strike rate of 88.07.
Duckett's heroics at Headingley saw him lauded by former England captain Nasser Hussain, who labelled him "the best multi-format batsman in the world".
Duckett said his success was down to an improved mentality after he had been criticised for getting himself out with needlessly flamboyant shots.
"My mindset personally is a bit different to what it has been over the last couple of years," he told reporters.

"Potentially there's a bit of maturity kicking in. Playing more Test matches, learning from mistakes, is number one.
"Failures are easy to make changes and learn from, rather than just when you do well."
Jasprit Bumrah, the world's top ranked Test fast bowler, did not take a wicket in England's second innings, with Duckett playing a key role in subduing the India star.
"It was pretty obvious Jasprit was a big threat of theirs," he said.
"It was about realising whenever he came on it was going to be a short, sharp burst, trying to see him off and not necessarily playing any big shots.

"It's just realising that and taking the ego out of things. When he's coming on it's to get the breakthrough, get me out, and if you get through that period it gets easier."
Duckett was ably assisted on Tuesday by Zak Crawley, who made 65 in a dominant opening stand of 188 with Duckett that paved the way for England to go 1-0 up in a five-match series ahead of next week's second Test at Edgbaston.
Crawley started the season with his England place being called into question following a run of low scores against New Zealand.
He responded with a century against Zimbabwe in a one-off Test at Trent Bridge last month.

The opener's fifty at Headingley was arguably even more valuable given the quality of the bowling and the state of the game.
"The leadership of this team don't really talk about these things – if my place was under pressure they certainly wouldn't tell me," said Crawley, who has long enjoyed the backing of England captain Ben Stokes.
"But I wasn't playing how I wanted to play in the winter and I feel a lot better about my game now."

South Africa teenager Pretorius becomes youngest test cricketer to score 150 on debut

BULAWAYO, Zimbabwe (AP) — South Africa teenager Lhuan-dre Pretorius became the youngest player to score 150 runs in test cricket on Saturday against Zimbabwe at Queens Sports Club. Pretorius made 153 on debut in the first test at 19 years, 93 days. He was 26 days younger than when Pakistan's Javed Miandad tallied 163 in 1976 against New Zealand in Lahore. Advertisement Pretorius was the fifth youngest man in test history to score a century on debut, and the youngest South African. Corbin Bosch, playing his second test, also scored a century, getting there on the third-to-last ball of the day. South Africa was 418-9 at stumps after the first day. 'It was amazing,' Pretorius said. 'I was quite nervous (when I walked in). I'm glad (the debut is) over. We knew they only had two seamers and we knew we could take the spinners out of the attack. I just love batting, fortunately it worked out for me today.' For their first test in neighboring Zimbabwe in 11 years, the Proteas picked only four of the 11 who won the World Test Championship final at Lord's this month. Among those not picked were captain Temba Bavuma, player of the final Aiden Markram, and Kagiso Rabada, who took nine wickets. Advertisement Spinner Keshav Maharaj was the stand-in captain and chose to bat first with three debutants in Pretorius and allrounders Dewald Brevis and Codi Yusuf. They were soon in trouble at 23-3, when Pretorius walked in, and 55-4, when Brevis joined him. The debutants shared 95 in 88 balls for the fourth wicket bridging lunch. There's no video review, and Pretorius didn't walk on 30 when he edged behind and was given not out. It would have been Tanaka Chivanga's fourth wicket in six overs. He appeared to nick behind again on 127. Pretorius reached his 50 in 53 balls, followed by Brevis' 50 in 38, the fastest by a South African debutant. Brevis was out for 51, including four sixes. Advertisement Pretorius broke Graeme Pollock's record to become the youngest South Africa century-maker — 100 off 112 balls — followed after tea by 150 in 157 balls. Chivanga finally got Pretorius to pull at a short ball that popped to mid-on. He scored 153 in 160 balls with 11 boundaries and four sixes. Yusuf's own useful contribution was 27 in a 59-run ninth-wicket stand with Bosch. Bosch was dropped on 2 and 97 and got to his century in the last over with a single toward backward square leg. His hundred took 124 balls and included 10 boundaries. Bosch had support from No. 11 batter Kwena Maphaka, who was 9 not out. Chivanga has 4-83. ___ AP cricket:

Maya Joint beats Alex Eala in stunning Eastbourne final, saving four championship points

When tennis powers downgraded the storied WTA tournament at Eastbourne, on the south coast of the U.K., fans and business owners in the town feared the consequences. It went from a 500-level event to a 250, named for the ranking points awarded to the winner, which comes with stricter regulations about how many top players can enter. Would fans be as interested? Advertisement If the first WTA 250 final there is anything to go by, they need not worry. The weekend before Wimbledon, with most of the tennis elite either in south-west London or a town in Germany, two rising prospects played a barnstorming 22-point final-set tiebreak, which ended with Maya Joint of Australia triumphing over Alex Eala of the Philippines, 6-4, 1-6, 7-6(10). Joint saved four championship points. Eala ended the match in tears. Both of them saved their best, bravest tennis for the most decisive moments of the match. On the championship points that Eala missed, she missed in trusting her shots, not because she was tentative. Joint is 19 and Eala is 20. Joint, who was born in the U.S. but represents Australia, planned to play college tennis in Texas, but turned professional shortly after earning her first WTA Tour win at the 2024 U.S. Open. Eala, who has been making tennis history for the Philippines since she was 12, announced herself to the tennis world earlier this year in Miami, when she beat three Grand Slam champions in a row on the way to the semifinals. On the grass at Eastbourne, they showed why they are both ready to rise further, even if one of them had to lose. Over in Bad Homburg in Germany, world No. 3 Jessica Pegula's grass-court acumen proved a bridge too far for Iga Świątek, the five-time Grand Slam champion who is much better on it than most in tennis — and even Świątek herself — would assume. But to be that player, the Pole needs her serve to fire. It fired all week in Germany, until the final. She could not find her targets in the first set, making just under half of her first serves and putting herself on the back foot too often. Pegula broke with the score at 3-3, and did it again at 5-5 in the second set, edging out a 6-4, 7-5 win and becoming the only women's player to win a title on all three surfaces in 2025. Advertisement Even in defeat, the second set should give Świątek more belief about her grass capabilities. She was the dominant player once rallies began and constantly ate into Pegula's serve advantage, but she also couldn't convert that dominance into break points. Pegula's flat, persistently powerful ball led Świątek to overpress, even when she was seeing results from hitting with more shape and height to push the American back, like she did in beating Jasmine Paolini in the semifinal. All four finalists will now travel to Wimbledon, where the main draw begins June 30. In the meantime, Eastbourne can bask in the knowledge that an administrative downgrade need not diminish its importance. Produce quality tennis, and they will come.
