Let Najib serve out his sentence under house arrest, Umno asks king

Former prime minister Najib Razak is serving a six-year jail sentence in connection with the SRC International case.
PETALING JAYA : Umno today asked the king to allow its former president, Najib Razak, to serve the remainder of his prison sentence under house arrest, following the attorney-general's confirmation of a royal addendum authorising such an arrangement.
In a statement, Umno secretary-general Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki said the party was grateful that the AG had confirmed the existence of the royal addendum.
'We plead with the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, who has absolute power as provided for by the Federal Constitution, to execute the order,' he said.
The Federal Court was told on July 9 that AG Dusuki Mokhtar had acknowledged the existence of the addendum.
Senior federal counsel Shamsul Bolhassan said Dusuki had confirmed the existence of the addendum on July 2, but that he was disputing its genuineness and validity.
Najib wants the government to implement the Jan 29, 2024 order in the addendum allowing him to serve the remainder of his jail sentence in the SRC International case under house arrest.
The former prime minister got wind of the addendum order soon after the Federal Territories Pardons Board announced in early February last year that his 12-year jail term was halved and the RM210 million fine reduced to RM50 million.

NGO lodges report against blog for allegedly defaming Sabah CM

Gerakan Kuasa Rakyat Malaysia chairman Zulkarnain Mahdar filed the report at the Sri Petaling police station today. KUALA LUMPUR : An NGO has lodged a police report against a blog for posting an article alleging Sabah chief minister Hajiji Noor's involvement in the state's mining scandal. Gerakan Kuasa Rakyat Malaysia (G57) chairman Zulkarnain Mahdar claimed the article, titled 'The real scandal is not in the jet, but in Hajiji Noor's silence', posted on Malaysianspeaks, is defamatory and would create a negative perception of the chief minister. 'They are 'spinning' the narrative that Hajiji is involved in the Sabah mining scandal and that he directed Sabah Mineral Management CEO Natasha Sim to accept a bribe,' he told reporters after filing the report at the Sri Petaling police station here today. He claimed that the article was being used by state opposition parties, particularly Warisan and Sabah Umno, to smear Hajiji's reputation and weaken the state government. Zulkarnain urged the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission to investigate the portal and the individuals involved. Yesterday, Malaysiakini reported Sabah Umno questioning whether Sim's alleged RM400,000 luxury trip on a private jet was approved by the board of directors of SMM, which is chaired by Hajiji. This comes after a photo went viral on social media, allegedly showing Sim, SMM company secretary Emily Chong, and Sabah timber tycoon Elbert Lim standing outside a private jet said to belong to an Indonesian coal tycoon.

Sabah allocates highest amount of RM136mil for scholarships this year

Chief minister Hajiji Noor said 4,170 students will benefit from the scholarship programme this year. (Bernama pic) KOTA KINABALU : The Sabah government has allocated RM136 million for state government scholarships this year. This is part of its continuous commitment to strengthen the development of higher education in the state, chief minister Hajiji Noor said. The allocation is the highest so far. It has risen significantly from RM50 million in 2020, reflecting the determination of the state government to ensure its youth, regardless of socio-economic background, have a chance to further their studies, Hajiji said. 'This is the government's long-term investment project to develop quality human capital that is competitive. 'We don't want young Sabahans to be left behind in education due to financial constraints,' he said in his speech read by Sabah science, technology and innovation minister Arifin Arif at the Sabah university student aid presentation at Universiti Malaysia Sabah here today. He said 4,170 students will benefit from the scholarship programme this year, in line with the goals of Sabah Maju Jaya in empowering the education sector as a core of state development. In addition, the Sabah government has allocated RM77.5 million to carry out 13 education initiatives to benefit schools, parent-teacher associations, Sabah student associations and tertiary students. This includes a one-off cash aid for registrations, aid to purchase computers and the flight fare aid for Sabah students. Hajiji said the Sabah education fund, introduced in June 2022, had helped 10,104 recipients, and RM15.8 million had been spent so far.

Women's rights pioneer and Ops Lalang detainee Theresa Lim dies at 68, mourned by activists

KUALA LUMPUR, July 21 — Renowned women's rights activist Theresa Lim Chin Chin has reportedly died at the age of 68 early yesterday. Malaysiakini cited her son Daniel Jeyachristi Anthony confirming the death at Universiti Malaya Medical Centre over cancer complications. 'She was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma earlier this week. She was too weak to start chemotherapy and deteriorated further,' he was quoted saying. Lim was formerly detained under the Internal Security Act (ISA) during Ops Lalang on October 27, 1987, and released on June 3, 1988. She had then been involved in All Women's Action Society (Awam) and the Women's Development Collective (WDC). Her photograph had appeared on The Star's front page on October 28, 1987 recording the ISA detention, labelled 'Miss Lim Chin Chin – Aliran women's leader'. She later documented her 60-day solitary confinement experience in a published account. After her release, she had continued her activism to the end of her life. Former Batu MP Chua Tian Chang today mourned her death, saying her sacrifices had paved the way for today's movements. 'Her unwavering spirit will continue to inspire us forward. Rest well Lim, your legacy lives on in our hearts as well as in the fight for justice,' the activist known as Tian Chua posted on Instagram. Activist Kua Kia Soong also paid tribute to Lim. They had both been detained under Ops Lalang. 'She suffered torture during her detention, especially during the first 60 days of solitary confinement. The trauma left her with an auto-immune disability that left her unwell for many years,' he posted on Facebook.
