Denmark stuns Canada, US beats Finland to reach semifinals at ice hockey worlds
Denmark had tied it with 2:17 remaining when Nikolaj Ehlers scored through traffic in only his second game at the tournament following his Winnipeg Jets being eliminated from the NHL playoffs.
The Danes had pulled goaltender Frederik Dichow for the extra attacker in the sold-out arena in Herning before Ehlers struck.
Canada outshot Denmark 30-11 in the first two periods but couldn't solve Dichow, who made 39 saves in all, until 5:17 into the third when captain Sidney Crosby fed Travis Sanheim to score into the roof of the net. Canada was outshot 22-10 in the final period, though.
Denmark has only two NHL players at the worlds, while Canada has only two who don't play at the NHL.
The semifinals are set for Saturday: Denmark will play Switzerland; and the United States will face Sweden.
Earlier on Thursday, the U.S. advanced by beating Finland 5-2 backed by Conor Garland's two power-play goals
Trailing 2-1 in the middle period, the Americans needed 71 seconds to turn things around when defenseman Zeev Buium put home a rebound at 23:53 before Garland's second goal restored the U.S. lead.
'I really liked how we stayed with it and built as the game wore on,' U.S. head coach Ryan Warsofsky said. 'We got off to a bit of a slow start, but really found our game as time wore on. I give our guys a lot of credit as they beat an excellent hockey team today.'
Garland had given the U.S. a 1-0 lead 4:50 into the game when he received a cross-ice pass from Logan Cooley to beat goalie Juuse Saros from the right circle.
Finland tied it at 1-1 on Eeli Tolvanen's power-play goal. Patrik Puistola scored from the slot on another power play 7:46 into the second period for Finland to take a 2-1 lead.
The Americans added two more goals in the third. Shane Pinto scored the fourth 5:52 into the final period and captain Clayton Keller finished the scoring into an empty net.
The U.S. team hasn't won a medal since taking bronze in 2021. The Finns have been waiting for a medal since they won gold in 2022.
Sweden delighted the home crowd in the Avicii Arena in Stockholm by eliminating defending champion Czech Republic with a 5-2 victory.
Lucas Raymond and Leo Carlsson led the co-host with two goals each.
Earlier in Herning, last year's runner-up Switzerland advanced by blanking Austria 6-0.

L.A. Kings, Alex Laferriere agree to 3-year contract
The Los Angeles Kings and restricted free agent winger Alex Laferriere have agreed to to a three-year contract, according to multiple league sources. Frank Seravalli reported that the new deal has an average annual value of $4.1 million. According to PuckPedia, Laferriere will make $3.5 million in 2025-26 and $4.4 million in 2026-27 and 2027-28. The Kings are expected to announce the deal on Saturday. Advertisement Laferriere played 81 games as a rookie in 2023-24 and built upon that last season with 19 goals and 23 assists in an increased role. His ice time shot up from 13:13 in his first season to 16:32. He finished sixth in goals and seventh in points amid a well-balanced group of top-nine forwards. The Kings are getting him at a good rate, given that the strong-skating Laferriere could continue to improve his offensive numbers if he remains on a line with two of their most skilled forwards, Kevin Fiala and Quinton Byfield. And the three-year term could also set up Laferriere for a much bigger payday if he's able to put up seasons of 25 to 30 goals. In June, Kings general manager Ken Holland said he was out to look for a 'fair deal' on a shorter term with Laferriere and sounded confident about getting him signed before training camp. 'He wants to be here,' Holland said. 'He likes it here. … Real good player, real important player. Guy that can move up the roster. Can play on the third line. He can check. Conscientious. Important guy to this organization.' If he's able to improve on his 9.8 shooting percentage and have a larger presence on the power play, Laferriere could become one of the Kings' top offensive producers. His new deal expires with arbitration-eligible RFA status one year before he becomes eligible for unrestricted free agency. The Kings are effectively done with their significant contractual dealings this summer. But they still could lock up star right wing Adrian Kempe, who will be entering his contract year. Kempe, 28, tied for the team lead with 35 goals last season and paced the club with 73 points. He's led the Kings in scoring for the past two seasons, and his 139 goals over the last four seasons are 45 more than the next most prolific scorer on the team. With the salary cap set to rise even further in 2026-27 after jumping to $95.5 million for this season, Kempe is due to cash in after giving the Kings a ton of production on a four-year contract that carries a $5.5 million cap number. Holland said he wanted to get through free agency and Laferriere's contract talks before tackling Kempe's expected big deal, which would start in 2026-27. 'I'm not going to trade him,' Holland said. 'He loves it here. Wants to be here. We want to keep him.'

Phillies hoping Jhoan Duran's 100 mph fastball and Harrison Bader's defense lead to a World Series
Associated Press PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Harrison Bader got a first-hand look at Jhoan Duran's electric stuff — try a four-seam fastball that averages 100.2 mph — in their short stint together in Minnesota. Bader saw enough to know the Phillies might have finally landed the closer that can put them over the top and win the franchise's first World Series title since 2008. 'Plain and simple, he has close-the-door stuff,' Bader said. 'Tough situation, runner on, maybe baseball happens, he kind of puts a couple runners on. He's got strikeout stuff to strike out three in a row. I've seen it all year. I've seen it on the other side.' Bader and Duran both made their Phillies' debuts in Friday's 5-4 comeback win against the Detroit Tigers. Bader, a right-handed hitting outfielder, and Duran were both acquired on consecutive days in separate trades with the Minnesota Twins. They are now thrust into the thick of a pennant race. Duran's role is settled. He's the closer — the Phillies tested out his fire entrance on the big screen ahead of his debut. The 27-year-old Duran — nicknamed Durantulla and he wore spider cleats on Friday — had 16 saves and a 2.01 ERA in 49 appearances this season, striking out 53 in 49 1/3 innings with the Twins.
