Why are Lionel Messi, Jordi Alba suspended by MLS?

The Hindu5 days ago
Inter Miami players Lionel Messi and Jordi Alba have been handed a one-match suspension by the Major League Soccer (MLS) after the duo didn't participate in this year's MLS All-Star game.
They will miss Miami's next league match against FC Cincinnati.
'Per league rules, any player who does not participate in the All-Star Game without prior approval from the league is ineligible to compete in their club's next match,' the league said in a release on Friday.
'I know Lionel Messi loves this league. I don't think there's a player – or anyone – who has done more for Major League Soccer than Messi. I fully understand, respect, and admire his commitment to Inter Miami, and I respect his decision. Unfortunately, we have a long-standing policy regarding participation in the All-Star Game, and we had to enforce it. It was a very difficult decision,' said MLS Commissioner Don Garber.
'That said, we're going to take a hard look at the policy moving forward. I'm committed to working with our players to determine how the rule should evolve,' Garber added.
Both players were voted into the showcase by the fans and media but neither featured in the MLS squad's 3-1 win against the Liga MX All-Stars.
Messi had missed the All-Star Game last year with an injury.
Miami, fifth in the Eastern Conference table, hosts first-placed FC Cincinnati on Saturday night at Chase Stadium in Fort Lauderdale.

Jarren Duran's 4 RBIs, Bello's one-run outing give Boston 13-1 win over Twins in series finale

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Jarren Duran went 3-for-5 with a home run and four RBIs, Trevor Story hit his second homer in as many games, and the Red Sox earned a series win with a 13-1 victory at Minnesota on Wednesday. HT Image Red Sox starter Brayan Bello yielded one earned run on five hits in seven innings with four strikeouts. The Dominican right-hander has recorded a quality start in nine of his past 10 outings. Boston finished the month 17-7 and has the American League's fifth-best record at 59-51. Minnesota (51-57) is 4-8 since the All-Star break and sits fourth in the AL Central. Story's 17th home run of the season gave Boston a 1-0 lead in the second inning. Abraham Toro had an RBI sacrifice fly in the third, and Duran's two-run single in the fifth made it 4-1 and ended starter Zebby Matthews' day. Matthews (2-3) gave up five earned runs on eight hits with four strikeouts. Red Sox third baseman Alex Bregman sat to rest the quadriceps that kept him out for seven weeks. He's expected to return Friday. The Twins placed outfielder Byron Buxton on the 10-day injured list Tuesday with left rib cartilage irritation. Minnesota shortstop Carlos Correa is listed as day-to-day after exiting Tuesday's game with a migraine. After his 416-foot home run to the second deck in right-center field in the sixth inning, Duran rounded the bases with his arms outstretched to mimic an airplane, an homage to the turbulent charter flight that brought the Red Sox to the Twin Cities on Sunday night. Going into Wednesday, Boston led the AL and ranked third in the majors with a 2.94 ERA in July. Both teams are off Thursday. The Red Sox open a six-game home stand Friday against Houston, while Minnesota begins a six-game road trip Friday at Cleveland. ___ AP MLB:

Tigers beat Diamondbacks 7-2, winning 4th straight after a 1-12 slump

DETROIT (AP) — Kerry Carpenter hit a two-run homer and drove in three runs, Chris Paddack threw six solid innings in his Detroit debut and the Tigers beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 7-2 on Wednesday. HT Image The AL Central-leading Tigers have won four straight games, coming off a 1-12 slump that spanned before and after the All-Star Game. Detroit may make moves before the trade deadline on Thursday to bolster its chances winning the franchise's first World Series since 1984. Arizona has lost five straight, matching its longest losing streak of the season. Paddack (4-10) gave up only one run on three hits with five strikeouts and no walks, two days after the right-hander was acquired in a trade from the Minnesota Twins. Ryne Nelson (6-3) allowed four runs — one earned — on six hits. Kyle Backhus followed and gave up three runs on four hits, retiring only two batters. Carpenter snapped a scoreless tie with a two-out triple in the third inning, scoring Colt Keith after his second single of the game. Jake Rogers hit a two-run home run in a three-run sixth inning, giving the Tigers a six-run cushion that was comfortable against the offensively challenged Diamondbacks. Arizona All-Star third baseman Eugenio Suarez, a potential trade target, was 1 for 4 at the plate. Suarez returned to the lineup after missing Tuesday's game because he was hit on the right hand by a pitch the previous night. Carpenter's two-run homer in the fifth inning gave Detroit a 4-1 lead. Paddack gave up only one run in his second straight start. Arizona RHP Merrill Kelly (9-6, 3.22) is the team's probable pitcher Friday night on the road against the Athletics. Detroit plays at Philadelphia on Friday night with Tigers RHP Jack Flaherty (6-10, 4.51) and Phillies LHP Ranger Suárez (8-4, 2.59) expected to pitch. ___ AP MLB:

Players were charged a 'rake', or cut of the pot, while the games featured services from women who served drinks, gave massages, and 'offered companionship'.
