NBA analyst makes case for former Nugget Russell Westbrook as free agent target

Yahoo2 days ago
The Denver Nuggets have made some big moves this offseason, but they might be making a key mistake.
Over the past few weeks, the Nuggets have transformed their roster as they look to make some noise in a tougher Western Conference next season. After taking the eventual champion Oklahoma City Thunder to seven games last season, the Nuggets clearly believe they aren't far away from making another title run of their own.
With Nikola Jokic running the show, the Nuggets will always be capable of making some postseason noise when healthy. Of course, the Nuggets' run to the second round last season wasn't always fueled by their stars.
Russell Westbrook was a key part of Denver's success in 2025, even becoming a playoff hero for the franchise. After declining his player option to enter free agency, Westbrook is still looking for his next home.
While Denver has made some solid moves, such as adding Tim Hardaway Jr. and Jonas Valanciunas, Bleacher Report's Grant Hughes explained why Westbrook still has some value. Hughes noted that the former MVP has transitioned into one of the league's premier sixth men and still has the ability to take over games despite going into his 18th season.
Considering all of the value Westbrook brought to Denver last season, the Nuggets could be making a mistake in letting him walk. By energizing the team on sluggish nights and consistently getting the crowd into games, Westbrook always added a spark that doesn't show up on the stat sheet.
Still, as Westbrook looks for a new home, there is no doubt that he can still be a valuable piece of a winning team.

VJ Edgecombe jokingly defends Paul George for 'bad shot' comment on Damian Lillard

Years later, Paul George's comments after Damian Lillard's biggest career shot continue to cloud over him. As he welcomed VJ Edgecombe to the Philadelphia 76ers, the rookie was asked his thoughts on the biggest moment his multi-time All-Star teammate was part of. Let's rewind to six years ago — which is an eternity in the NBA. With a chance to close the Oklahoma City Thunder out in five games, Lillard scored 50 points and hit a deep 3-point game-winner against George to lead the Portland Trail Blazers to a Round 1 series win. It's one of the biggest buckets in recent playoff history. Nothing can really beat a deep 3-pointer to send your opponent home. Especially against somebody who finished third in MVP voting that season. Lillard was rushed by his teammates and looked at the camera with a stone-cold face. Afterward, George added to the moment. He called Lillard's game-winner a "bad shot." He argued he could've found a better quality look in the final seconds instead of letting the final seconds tick away to attempt a ridiculously deep outside shot. While George may be right in a vacuum, fans across the league mocked him. He was criticized for the comment and was cited as being hurt about what had just transpired. After all, emotions are high when you get bounced out of the playoffs again in disappointing fashion. That would be the final game George would play for the Thunder. He was shockingly traded to the LA Clippers a couple of months later. Russell Westbrook was also traded to the Houston Rockets. The Thunder blew up their core and entered a rebuild that centered around Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. As we know, that eventually led to an NBA championship — something Lillard has yet to accomplish. One of those fans who likely ran around their living rooms in shock from Lillard's game-winner was George's new teammate, Edgecombe. The 19-year-old was in middle school when it happened. He went on the "Podcast P with Paul George" show to dissect the shot as a Lillard fan. "That's a good shot... But it's over my teammate, so it's a bad shot," Edgecombe said with a smile. That's one way to gain rapport with your Sixers teammate. All these years later, George has stuck by his original answer. He even broke it down again on his podcast by adding context to what he meant. "Obviously, I know how elite he is, his range. Obviously, he could shoot that s--- effortlessly. I wasn't coming off or trying to be a hater on that specifically," George said. "It was a bad shot in terms of like I felt the clock's running down. He could've drove me back and took a 3-pointer closer in... It's a legacy shot for sure." It's funny to see how much of a ripple effect Lillard's game-winner had. It indirectly jump-started the Thunder's current NBA championship and has stuck with George for all of the wrong reasons as one of his career-defining moments.

Mikal Bridges' extension one of three tasks remaining on Knicks' offseason list

The roster is basically set. The head coach is hired. The depth chart, for the most part, is easy to plot. As the calendar approaches the dead month of the NBA schedule, the heavy lifting of the Knicks offseason feels finished. But smaller tasks remain, with three in particular that merit further analysis. Mikal Bridges extension Advertisement At the risk of contradicting the message of this column's introduction, this decision is significant. Bridges has been eligible since the end of the NBA Finals to negotiate a contract extension that maxes out at four years, $156 million.

Nets' Egor Demin still has question marks after solid summer league

Brooklyn Nets guard Egor Demin had a solid performance in the Las Vegas Summer League after being taken by the Nets with the eighth overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft. Brooklyn was hoping to see Demin play well against the available competition in Las Vegas and while he had some surprising developments, he still has some questions that he has to answer. "Played three games at summer league. I thought that it was up and down, I think is what I would say. The good news is that he drilled 43% on eight attempts per game from three," The Athletic's Sam Vecenie said of Demin on his "Game Theory" podcast. As Vecenie alluded to, Demin impressed many by not only shooting 43.5% from three-point land, but by also shooting that well on 7.7 three-point attempts per game. "I think that if you're bullish on Egor because of the shot, you've got real reason to be bullish based on the shot falling," Vecenie continued by diving into the bad news regarding Demin's performance. "My issue with Egor was never just the shot. It was the shot that fell here (in Vegas), but I still have some questions about (Demin's shot) long-term mixed with the fact that he doesn't really get by anybody." Vecenie, along with his co-host, Bryce Simon of Motor City Hoops, then delve into some of the concerns of Demin regarding his activity inside the three-point line. Simon goes on to note that Demin attempted just four two-point shots and two free-throws in over 75 minutes of floor time for the Nets. Demin finished his time in Las Vegas with averaged of 11.3 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 1.3 assists per game while shooting 40.7% from the field overall. "How does he ever get by anybody if he's not using a ball screen? That kind of showed itself in summer league," Simon said. Vecenie added that "he averaged 1.3 assists per game at summer league because again, he just couldn't get by anybody. My worry is that he's just not going to be able to actualize the passing in the way that we want him to despite the fact that he has this amazing vision which is incredibly real in my opinion."
