Simon Wiesenthal Center Slams Glastonbury's 'Bland Response' To Bob Vylan's 'Death To The IDF' Chant
Although Glastonbury and the BBC have condemned Bob Vylan's onstage comments at the England music festival, at least one Jewish human rights organization is not satisfied with the response.
Jim Berk, CEO of the Simon Wiesenthal Center, called out both the festival and the network for providing a platform for the 'disgraceful' performance, in which Vylan led the crowd in chants of 'death to the IDF' and 'free Palestine.'

'It was sickening, dangerous and chillingly reminiscent of a modern-day Nazi rally,' said Berk, adding: 'It was public incitement, not performance. The explicit calls for violence against Jews, broadcast live by the BBC without interruption, literally gave hate a stage, a microphone, and the stamp of legitimacy of one of Britain's most respected public institutions.'
Berk continued, 'And Glastonbury's bland response? Saying the chants merely 'crossed a line' and offering vague 'reminders' to artists is not accountability—it's cowardice. When confronted with explicit calls for violence against Jews, anything short of absolute condemnation and corrective action is complicity.'
Referencing Hamas' October 2023 invasion of Israel's Nova music festival, where 378 were killed and 44 hostages were taken, Berk called the chants 'deeply re-traumatizing and terrifying.'
'This is a moment of reckoning. Festival organizers, media outlets, and artists must choose: will they be platforms for peace, or enablers of hate? Because silence is not neutrality, it is a green light for bigotry,' added Berk. 'Festivals must be prepared to halt performances that invoke hate; broadcasters must air festivals on deferred live and use their kill switch to take hate speech immediately off the air. Never again is not a slogan: It's a responsibility. And it's being betrayed on the world's biggest stages.'
Following the performance, the BBC has decried the 'deeply offensive' set, which a spokesperson said they have 'no plans to make the performance available on demand.'
A Glastonbury rep has said that organizers are 'appalled' by the chants, which 'very much crossed a line and we are urgently reminding everyone involved in the production of the Festival that there is no place at Glastonbury for antisemitism, hate speech or incitement to violence.'

Miliband eyes refinery support after Lindsey collapse
Ministers are exploring ways to hand state support to Britain's remaining oil refineries as they scramble to deal with the fallout from the collapse of the Prax Lindsey site in Lincolnshire which has cast a shadow over hundreds of jobs. Sky News understands that Ed Miliband, the energy security secretary, wants to devise a mechanism for refineries to become eligible for the Energy-Intensive Industries Compensation Scheme - from which they are currently excluded. Energy costs were at the heart of the government's industrial strategy launched last week. Money latest: Such a move would hand a welcome financial boost to the sector by assisting them with energy costs amid a slew of challenges which culminated in the appointment of compulsory liquidators over the Prax Lindsey refinery on Monday. The site's insolvency - revealed by Sky News - has drawn strong criticism from the government, with energy minister Michael Shanks calling the development "deeply concerning". "There have been longstanding issues with this company and workers have been badly let down," he said. "The secretary of state is today writing to the Insolvency Service to demand an immediate investigation into the conduct of the directors, and the circumstances surrounding this insolvency. "The government will ensure supplies are maintained, protect our energy security, and do everything we can to support workers and the local community, including engaging with trade unions and industry bodies. "The company has left the government with very little time to act." Prax Group is owned by Sanjeev Kumar Soosaipillai, who also acts as its chairman and chief executive and is the sole director of the refining subsidiary. The crisis at the Lindsey refinery, which is located on a 500-acre site five miles from the Humber Estuary, echoes that at Britain's dwindling number of oil refineries. According to the company, the site has an annual production capacity of 5.4 million tonnes, processing more than 20 different types of crude including petrol, diesel, bitumen, fuel oil and aviation fuels. The refinery, which was bought from France's Total in 2020, is understood to have become a growing drain on cash across the wider Prax Group, with which it has cross-guarantees. About 180 people work at State Oil Ltd, Prax Group's parent entity, while roughly 440 more are employed at the Prax Lindsey Refinery. The other assets are not in administration themselves but are expected to be sold as part of the reorganisation of the group.

EU tech rules not included in U.S. trade talks, EU Commission says

Meijer BRUSSELS (Reuters) -The European Union on Monday pushed back against U.S. criticism of its landmark tech rules that many feared could be included in ongoing trade negotiations with the United States and subsequently watered down. Adopted recently, the Digital Markets Act (DMA) seeks to rein in the power of Alphabet, Amazon, Apple, Meta Platforms, Microsoft, China's ByteDance and The Digital Services Act (DSA) requires big online platforms to do more to tackle illegal and harmful content. Both legislations have come under fire from the U.S. administration which says it unfairly targets U.S. tech companies. "The legislations will not be changed. The DMA and the DSA are not on the table in the trade negotiations with the U.S.," spokesperson Thomas Regnier told a daily news conference. He said the EU would not brook any interference from foreign governments on how it enforces its landmark rules which come with hefty fines for violations. "We are not going to adjust the implementation of our legislation based on the actions of third countries. If we started to do that, then we would have to do it with numerous third countries," Regnier said. The EU handed out its first fines to Apple and Meta earlier this year, with both risking further daily fines if regulators find that they have yet to comply with the rules in the coming months.
