Central Bank of Syria Reveals Truth about Changing Currency

Taarek Refaat
The Central Bank of Syria confirmed that, as part of its plans to secure the market's needs for the national currency, it is completing the printing of banknotes at the Russian company with which it had previously contracted. This is in accordance with approved standards and official agreements that guarantee the quality of printing and the integrity of the procedures followed.
This clarification comes in response to reports that Syria has stopped printing currency in Russia.
On the other hand, the bank clarified that "regarding what has been published regarding changing the national currency or launching a completely new issue, we confirm that this issue is still under study by the Central Bank of Syria and is subject to careful assessments, including economic and technical aspects."
It added, "No decision will be made in this regard before the required studies are completed and the necessary decision-making procedures are taken."
According to three sources quoted by Reuters on Friday, May 16, Syria intends to print new currency in the UAE and Germany instead of Russia.
The Central Bank of Syria affirmed its constant commitment to "monitoring economic developments and taking the necessary measures to achieve monetary stability and enhance confidence in the Syrian pound."
Syria received a new shipment of Syrian pounds printed in Russia last March, with more shipments expected in the future, Reuters reported earlier.

Israel violations across Mideast threaten regional and int'l security: Egypt UN envoy - Foreign Affairs

Israel's violations pose a threat to collective regional and international security, said Ambassador Osama Abdel-Khalek, Egypt's permanent representative to the United Nations, during the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) session on developments in the Middle East and the Gaza Strip on Wednesday. Ambassador Abdel-Khalek strongly condemned "the Israeli occupation's breaches of the ceasefire in southern Lebanon" and its "continued violations of Syrian territories," according to Al-Qahera News. "The Palestinian people have been under fierce attacks for more a year and a half," he noted. Abdel-Khalek reiterated Egypt's commitment to "continuing mediation efforts to establish an immediate and permanent ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.' He also stressed Egypt's rejection of an Israeli plan to forcibly relocate Palestinian civilians to a ghetto-style, so-called 'humanitarian city' in the southern part of the strip. Moreover, he called on the UNSC to "issue a resolution that compels Israel to halt its attacks on Gaza," urging the international community to "assume its responsibility toward the Israeli aggression on Gaza." Abdel-Khalek's comments, as the images of tens of emaciated Palestinians, including children, who have been starved to death by the five-month-old Israeli blockade on aid to Gaza, sent shivers among millions around the world. On Monday, 25 Western countries, along with the EU's crisis commissioner, issued a joint statement calling for an immediate end to Israel's war on Gaza and the immediate and unfettered entry of humanitarian aid to the strip. The statement, which Egypt welcomed, condemned Israel's blockade on the entry of aid to the strip and rejected any forced displacement or settlement expansion in the occupied Palestinian territories. On Wednesday, in Gaza ceasefire talks mediated by Egypt, Qatar and the US in Doha, Hamas submitted its response to an Israeli proposal for a 60-day ceasefire in Gaza. Hamas proposed amendments related to aid entry to the strip, Israel's military withdrawal maps, and guarantees for a permanent end to the war, according to sources familiar with the Doha talks. Since launching its genocidal war on Gaza in October 2023, the Israeli army has killed more than 59,000 Palestinians and wounded more than 140,000, mostly children and women. In parallel, the Israeli army has carried out deadly operations against 3 million Palestinians in the occupied West Bank, killing hundreds and forcing tens of thousands out of their homes. Gold Prices Decline Locally and Globally Amid Profit-Taking and Improved Risk Appetite

Waleed Farouk Gold prices saw a notable decline in Thursday's trading, weighed down by profit-taking after the precious metal reached a five-week high. Improved global risk sentiment also reduced demand for gold as a safe haven. In the local market, gold prices fell by approximately EGP 30, with 21-karat gold recording EGP 4,650 per gram, while the ounce dropped by around $25 to $3,365. The other gold price levels were as follows: 24-karat gold: EGP 5,314 18-karat gold: EGP 3,986 14-karat gold: EGP 3,100 Gold pound coin: EGP 37,200 On Wednesday, prices also ended the session lower, with 21-karat gold opening at EGP 4,710 and closing at EGP 4,680. Meanwhile, the gold ounce dropped from $3,432 to $3,390. Selling Pressure on Gold and Silver Amid Improved Global Sentiment Trading opened today with renewed selling pressure on gold and silver, driven by improved investor sentiment following positive developments in global trade. These include the finalization of a trade deal between the United States and Japan, along with reports of a potential 15% tariff reduction between Washington and Brussels. At the same time, the U.S. dollar saw a modest recovery after three consecutive days of losses, which drew some liquidity away from the gold market. However, ongoing uncertainty regarding the timing of interest rate cuts by the Federal Reserve capped the dollar's gains, offering some support to the yellow metal. Markets Eye the Fed Amid Monetary Policy Uncertainty Despite expectations that the Federal Reserve will keep rates unchanged in its late July meeting, markets continue to price in at least one rate cut before the end of Q4. This comes amid growing divisions within the Fed, with key members like Christopher Waller and Michelle Bowman advocating for a rate cut at the upcoming July 30 policy meeting. These internal divisions, coupled with mounting political pressures, add to the uncertainty surrounding the future direction of U.S. monetary policy and weigh on both the dollar and precious metals. Silver Under Market Pressure but Supported by Industrial Demand Silver, meanwhile, has been affected by the general weakness in precious metals. Still, it continues to receive relative support from growing industrial demand, particularly in sectors like electronics, clean energy, and photovoltaic cells. The movement in silver prices also remains influenced by other factors, including U.S. bond yields, the strength of the dollar, and upcoming economic data, all of which may redirect investor sentiment in the short term. Focus Turns to Key Economic Data and ECB Decision Investors are now closely watching a series of key economic indicators due later today, including preliminary Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) readings, U.S. jobless claims, and new home sales. These data points could reshape market expectations regarding the Fed's next move and the dollar's direction. Meanwhile, attention is also on the upcoming monetary policy decision by the European Central Bank (ECB), which could add another layer of short-term volatility to gold and silver markets. read more CBE: Deposits in Local Currency Hit EGP 5.25 Trillion Morocco Plans to Spend $1 Billion to Mitigate Drought Effect Gov't Approves Final Version of State Ownership Policy Document Egypt's Economy Expected to Grow 5% by the end of 2022/23- Minister Qatar Agrees to Supply Germany with LNG for 15 Years Business Oil Prices Descend amid Anticipation of Additional US Strategic Petroleum Reserves Business Suez Canal Records $704 Million, Historically Highest Monthly Revenue Business Egypt's Stock Exchange Earns EGP 4.9 Billion on Tuesday Business Wheat delivery season commences on April 15 News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters Arts & Culture "Jurassic World Rebirth" Gets Streaming Date News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Arts & Culture South Korean Actress Kang Seo-ha Dies at 31 after Cancer Battle Business Egyptian Pound Undervalued by 30%, Says Goldman Sachs Sports Get to Know 2025 WWE Evolution Results News "Tensions Escalate: Iran Probes Allegations of Indian Tech Collaboration with Israeli Intelligence" News Flights suspended at Port Sudan Airport after Drone Attacks

Syria, Saudi Arabia Seal $6 Billion Investment Deal

Israa Farhan Syria and Saudi Arabia have reached a landmark economic agreement to sign 44 investment deals valued at $6 billion, signaling a major step in rebuilding and strengthening bilateral ties across multiple sectors. The announcement was made by Syrian Information Minister Hamza al-Mustafa during a press conference in Damascus on Wednesday, coinciding with the Syrian-Saudi Investment Forum. The new agreements span a wide range of industries, including energy, technology, media, and communications. Minister al-Mustafa highlighted that the initiatives are expected to generate over 50,000 jobs across the country, contributing significantly to Syria's economic recovery. The minister underscored the importance of attracting private capital, particularly in the energy sector, and noted that discussions with Saudi investors also touched on cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, and digital infrastructure. This wave of investment follows sweeping political changes in Syria. On 8 December 2024, Damascus fell to the armed opposition, prompting President Bashar al-Assad to resign and leave the country. Ahmed Al-Sharaa, leader of the opposition, was appointed transitional president in January, with a new cabinet formed in March. read more Gold prices rise, 21 Karat at EGP 3685 NATO's Role in Israeli-Palestinian Conflict US Expresses 'Strong Opposition' to New Turkish Military Operation in Syria Shoukry Meets Director-General of FAO Lavrov: confrontation bet. nuclear powers must be avoided News Iran Summons French Ambassador over Foreign Minister Remarks News Aboul Gheit Condemns Israeli Escalation in West Bank News Greek PM: Athens Plays Key Role in Improving Energy Security in Region News One Person Injured in Explosion at Ukrainian Embassy in Madrid News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters Arts & Culture "Jurassic World Rebirth" Gets Streaming Date News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Arts & Culture South Korean Actress Kang Seo-ha Dies at 31 after Cancer Battle Business Egyptian Pound Undervalued by 30%, Says Goldman Sachs Sports Get to Know 2025 WWE Evolution Results News "Tensions Escalate: Iran Probes Allegations of Indian Tech Collaboration with Israeli Intelligence" News Flights suspended at Port Sudan Airport after Drone Attacks
