Massive Data Breach at US Dating App "Tea"

Taarek Refaat
U.S.-based dating app Tea has confirmed a significant data breach that resulted in the unauthorized exposure of more than 72,000 private images, including 13,000 selfies accompanied by government-issued IDs.
The app, which has gained recent notoriety for allowing women to anonymously review men they've dated or matched with on dating platforms, disclosed the breach late Saturday. The compromised images reportedly include user-submitted content from Tea's account verification process.
According to NBC News, the leaked materials were published Friday on controversial online forum 4Chan, widely known for hosting misinformation campaigns and extremist content. Screenshots circulating on Reddit and other social platforms showed ID cards paired with selfies, an alarming breach of user trust and safety.
"This breach is deeply concerning," said a spokesperson for Tea. "Roughly 72,000 images were accessed without authorization, including approximately 13,000 selfie-ID pairings submitted as part of our verification process." The company noted that the exposed database was over two years old and had originally been retained to comply with cyberbullying and law enforcement regulations.
The leaked content has sparked intense debate over digital privacy, particularly for women using dating apps. Critics argue that Tea's system, which encourages anonymous reviews of male users, poses inherent risks, especially when combined with identifiable personal data.
The New York Times highlighted that while supporters believe Tea empowers women to avoid deceptive or dangerous partners, critics warn of potential defamation and privacy violations, especially when names and images are involved.
Tea founder Shawn Cook responded on the company's website, stating that the app was inspired by his mother's traumatic experiences with online dating, including catfishing and unknowingly dating men with criminal backgrounds.
'Tea was created to protect women by giving them tools to verify men's identities, criminal records, and even run reverse image searches,' Cook said. 'This breach is a painful setback to that mission.'
The app claims it donates 10% of its profits to the National Domestic Violence Hotline and has positioned itself as a safer alternative to mainstream dating platforms.
In response to the breach, Tea has brought in external cybersecurity experts and says it is 'working around the clock to secure our systems and prevent future intrusions.'
The breach adds to a troubling pattern of large-scale cyberattacks targeting sensitive personal data. Just last week, a major U.S. insurance firm admitted it had suffered a breach affecting the majority of its customers.
Tea users have been advised to monitor their personal information and report any suspected identity theft or misuse of their images.

Plan underway to double funding for youth-led projects in Alexandria: MSMEDA chief

The Micro, Small and Medium Enterprise Development Agency (MSMEDA) has pumped EGP 2.2bn into financing 51,000 projects in Alexandria from July 2014 to May 2025. Bassel Rahmy, CEO of MSMEDA, has stressed the agency's commitment to doubling the available funding for youth in Alexandria in the coming phase. This is part of an ambitious plan carried out in coordination with the governorate and partner entities to expand industrial and productive ventures across the city and create more decent, sustainable job opportunities for local youth. Rahmy's remarks came in celebration of Alexandria's National Day, where he highlighted the agency's focus on widening access to finance for both existing project owners and young entrepreneurs hoping to launch new ventures. He also emphasised MSMEDA's efforts to equip project owners with the technical support they need to ensure long-term stability and growth. He added that the agency will continue prioritising industrial and productive projects, working hand in hand with the Alexandria governorate to provide all necessary financial and technical backing to the city's industrial zones. Moreover, Rahmy explained that MSMEDA's strategic approach in the governorate aims to offer more financial and non-financial incentives and support, as stipulated in Law No. 152/2020 on enterprise development. The goal is to empower Alexandria's youth to fully capitalise on these services, start projects across various sectors, and seize promising investment opportunities in the area. He also noted the advantages provided by Law No. 6/2025, which grants several tax facilitations to project owners. The agency head also pointed to MSMEDA's active role in forging agreements with key partners across Alexandria, including the iconic Bibliotheca Alexandrina. The agency signed a cooperation agreement with the library last year to enhance collaboration and share knowledge and technical expertise, with the aim of advancing common goals—particularly in economic empowerment of women and promoting an entrepreneurial mindset among youth. Rahmy added that MSMEDA succeeded in channelling EGP 2.2bn into Alexandria between July 2014 and May 2025, funding 51,000 projects and generating over 110,000 diverse job opportunities. He also revealed that EGP 102m of this amount was allocated to infrastructure, community development and training projects, creating 718,000 workdays for irregular labourers.

Luxury Diamond Market Trends: How the Market Responds to Price and Demand Changes in 2025

Waleed Farouk Prices for luxury fancy-color diamonds fell by 0.5% in the second quarter of the year. However, price increases in several sizes and intensity grades indicate early signs of market stabilization, according to the Fancy Color Research Foundation (FCRF). Pink diamond prices dipped slightly by 0.4% compared to the previous quarter, yet optimism remains. Pink stones dominated four out of the top five gainers in the list. Prices for fancy-vivid pink diamonds weighing 1 carat rose 1.8%, while fancy-intense pink diamonds of the same weight increased by 1.5%. Ten-carat fancy-vivid pink diamonds rose 1.2%, and five-carat fancy-vivid pink stones climbed 1.1%. Blue fancy-color diamonds declined by 0.3%, less than the 0.5% drop seen in the first quarter. The 1.50-carat fancy-vivid blue category was the leading gainer with a 1.5% increase. Blue diamonds weighing 8 carats increased 0.7%, and 1.50-carat fancy-blue stones stabilized after a 0.3% fall in Q1. Conversely, fancy yellow diamonds declined by 0.7%. They occupied four of the five largest drops, including a 3% fall for fancy-intense yellow diamonds at 3 carats, a 2.6% drop for the 10-carat category, a 2.5% decrease for 2-carat stones, and a 2.2% decrease for 1-carat stones. Since 2005, FCRF data show that yellow diamonds have increased by about 48%, pink diamonds have surged 391%, and blue diamonds have risen 241% in value. The foundation commented that with price reversal signals and gains in various sizes and intensities, especially for highly saturated colors, the market appears poised for a resurgence in demand in the second half of the year. On a year-over-year basis, the overall index dropped 2.4%, despite slight growth in some categories. Pink diamonds fell 1.4%, blue fancy-color diamonds decreased 1.9%, reflecting relative stability, while yellow diamonds fell 5%. read more CBE: Deposits in Local Currency Hit EGP 5.25 Trillion Morocco Plans to Spend $1 Billion to Mitigate Drought Effect Gov't Approves Final Version of State Ownership Policy Document Egypt's Economy Expected to Grow 5% by the end of 2022/23- Minister Qatar Agrees to Supply Germany with LNG for 15 Years Business Oil Prices Descend amid Anticipation of Additional US Strategic Petroleum Reserves Business Suez Canal Records $704 Million, Historically Highest Monthly Revenue Business Egypt's Stock Exchange Earns EGP 4.9 Billion on Tuesday Business Wheat delivery season commences on April 15 News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters Arts & Culture "Jurassic World Rebirth" Gets Streaming Date News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier News Ayat Khaddoura's Final Video Captures Bombardment of Beit Lahia Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Business Egyptian Pound Undervalued by 30%, Says Goldman Sachs Arts & Culture South Korean Actress Kang Seo-ha Dies at 31 after Cancer Battle Sports Get to Know 2025 WWE Evolution Results News "Tensions Escalate: Iran Probes Allegations of Indian Tech Collaboration with Israeli Intelligence"
