Oscar nominee clarifies comments about fellow contender's team 'tearing her down'

Yahoo30-01-2025
Karla Sofia Gascón, the star of Emilia Perez, has clarified her comments after accusing the social media team behind fellow Oscar contender I'm Still Here of undermining her.
Last week, Emilia Perez set a record for the most Oscar nominations for an international film and saw Gascón become the first openly trans actor to be recognised in an acting category by the Academy.
The Netflix musical has dominated awards season but it was joined in the Best Picture category with another foreign language film. Brazil's I'm Still Here was nominated for three awards including Best Picture, Best International Feature Film and Best Actress for Fernanda Torres.
However, Gascón has since claimed that the social media team behind the Brazilian film are working with Torres to 'tear me and Emilia Perez down'.
In an interview with the Brazilian newspaper, Folha de S Paulo, Gascón said: 'What I don't like are social media teams - people who work with these people - trying to diminish our work, like me and my movie, because that doesn't lead anywhere.
'You don't need to tear down someone's work to highlight another's. I have never, at any point, said anything bad about Fernanda Torres or her movie. However, there are people working with Fernanda Torres tearing me and Emilia Perez down. That speaks more about their movie than mine.'
In a statement since given to Variety, Gascón has clarified her comments stating that what she said did not extend to those 'directly associated' with Torres, but instead was aimed toward 'toxicity and violent hate speech on social media'.
'I am an enormous fan of Fernanda Torres and it has been wonderful getting to know her the past few months,' she added. 'In my recent comments, I was referencing the toxicity and violent hate speech on social media that I sadly continue to experience. Fernanda has been a wonderful ally, and no one directly associated with her has been anything but supportive and hugely generous.'
Gascón went on to call Torres a 'wonderful woman and an amazing actress who deserves all the recognition in the world,' but admitted that she had not yet seen I'm Still Here.
The 52-year-old concluded: 'This isn't a competition. This is simply about people liking one's work or not. If [Torres] wins [the Oscar], great. If I win, same.'
Earlier this month, Torres won the Golden Globe for Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Motion Picture, Drama.

Cooper Koch reveals what Lyle Menendez said after ‘Monsters' Emmy nomination

Cooper Koch recently received a congratulatory phone call from incarcerated Lyle Menendez. On Tuesday, the actor, 29, earned an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series for his performance as Erik Menendez in Netflix's 'Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story.' After the news hit, Koch's phone rang. Advertisement 9 Cooper Koch. / 'I spoke to Lyle today. He called to send his congrats and was very, very sweet,' the star shared on Entertainment Weekly's 'The Awardist' podcast on Tuesday. 'He was jealous that I was at Wimbledon this weekend. He was just so, so sweet …. and they're doing really well.' Koch also confessed that he was 'so nervous' about the nominations. Advertisement 'It's just a terrible morning,' he admitted. 'You're so anxious and you're just playing that game with yourself, 'You know what? It's OK either way. It's OK. I'm going to die one day and no one's going to remember or care if I had an Emmy nomination or not.'' Despite the jitters, Koch is just grateful to have been a part of the series, which also starred Nicholas Alexander Chavez as Lyle. 9 Cooper Koch as Erik Menendez in the Netflix show. Erik and Lyle claimed they suffered years of alleged physical, emotional and sexual abuse. 'I was so moved and I believed them immediately. It was then that I found all the similarities and I became quite obsessed with the case and with their story,' Koch told GQ Australia in December 2024. 'I was taping and taping, auditioning and auditioning, for seven years. Then finally you get the one that is supposed to happen.' 9 An image from the Emmy nominated series 'Monsters.' AP This wasn't the first time the actor tried to take on the part of Erik. 'The reason why he's been with me for so long is because I auditioned to play him seven years ago for the 'Law & Order' series and for the Lifetime movie,' Koch recalled. 'I got to the final rounds in both and I ultimately didn't get it. But I felt like I had to play this part,' he shared. 'His life is going to surround making change in the prison system, and I just think that is so beautiful.' In June, true crime expert Ana Garcia weighed in on whether 'Monsters' played a part in the brothers' new prison sentence. 9 Erik Menendez (L) and his brother Lyle during a pre-trial hearing. I also believe that Kim Kardashian writing her essay about why she believed that we should judge them based on how we all now view the kind of sexual abuse they say that they experienced. I think there has been a groundswell of support to have their case re-examined based on how we now understand victims of crime. Meaning they were victims here.' Advertisement Although the 'True Crime News' podcast host isn't sure the resentencing is deserved. 'But as I've said before to you, if every child who was abused killed their parents, we'd have a lot of dead parents. What I ask myself over and over again – this was clearly premeditated. They had so many opportunities not to kill their parents. Yet they went through with this plan, and then it was the cover-up afterwards.' 9 The Menendez brothers' mug shot. AP Along with a strong support system from around the country, Lyle and Erik also have their family members standing by them. Joan VanderMolen, Kitty's sister, has fought for their freedom along with Terry Baralt, José's only living sister. Advertisement 'I hear the Menendez family speaking loudly and clearly to every judge who will listen to them, every prosecutor who will listen to them,' Garcia shared, 'that they believe Lyle and Erik have already served enough time. Is that enough for a murder? For some cases, it is.' Although the siblings have served over 30 years behind bars, Garcia posed the question weighing on the public's mind: 'Have they served enough time for their murders?' 9 Erik Menendez, left, and his brother Lyle, are led into the courtroom in 1990. Los Angeles Times via Getty Images Lyle and Erik's parole board hearing was originally scheduled for June 13 but was pushed back to August 21 and August 22. 'One of the brothers actually said on Facebook that they thought it was a good idea,' Garcia added, 'because it gives them more time to prepare, more time for the defense, their attorneys to present because a lot is going to happen at this parole hearing.'

Liam Payne's final appearance: His emotional turn as Netflix's 'Building the Band' judge

Liam Payne, a guest judge on Netflix's "Building the Band," joked that One Direction members were 'amazing dancers.' One Direction member Liam Payne, a judge on "Building the Band," died at 31, just weeks after filming the Netflix competition series last fall. "Band" marks his final appearance. As Liam Payne gave feedback to the next generation of boy bands and girl groups during his guest judging debut on Netflix's "Building The Band," he took a moment to poke fun at his own former boy band, One Direction. After the newly formed group Midnight 'Til Morning sang a rousing rendition of the Goo Goo Dolls' "Iris" in Episode 7 (now streaming), Payne dinged the guys for their unchoreographed, helter-skelter movement on the stage. "We're in power ballad. We're looking for air grabs. Boy band central, baby," Payne told the four men. He added that Shane Appell's back flip "felt a tiny little bit misplaced." When Appell explained they were more instrumentalists than dancers, Payne replied that One Direction had stage presence while subverting the expectations of an earlier generation's dance-machine boy bands (like series host AJ McLean's Backstreet Boys). "We're amazing dancers, obviously, in One Direction. It's what we're known for," he cheekily told Appell. "George Michael was amazing at controlling an arena from just standing center and literally just doing that." Payne then stood up from his seat and swayed his hips confidently side to side in demonstration. Payne, alongside Destiny's Child's Kelly Rowland and Nicole Scherzinger from the Pussycat Dolls, watched six newly formed groups perform in front of a live audience for the first time and delivered constructive criticism, mostly centered on urging more onstage chemistry. "You've really got to come out on stage and claim your moment. Make a moment with these people; make a moment with us, (and) make a moment with yourselves," he told the contestants. "Building The Band," Payne's last TV appearance, was taped in September 2024, just weeks before his death. The 31-year-old singer died Oct. 16 after falling from a third-floor balcony at a Buenos Aires hotel. As part of One Direction – which Scherzinger helped form on the U.K. version of "The X-Factor" in 2010 – Payne broke sales, Billboard chart and streaming records. "Through his presence we see his deep love for music and his unwavering commitment to helping others find their voice," McLean said in a message that opened "Band's" first episode. "It's through that spirit that we dedicate this series to Liam and his family." 'Making the Band' contestants fangirl over Liam Payne The new 10-episode Netflix competition show, which streams its final batch of episodes July 23, challenged dozens of young singers to form groups with strangers without ever seeing them, "Love is Blind" style. In episodes 5 through 7, the six acts decided on their names: 3Quency, Soulidified, SZN4, Siren Society, Sweet Seduction and Midnight 'Til Morning. SZN4, with Donzell Taggart, Aaliyah Rose, Cameron Goode and Katie Roeder, is the only mixed-gender group. After the proficient yet tenuously connected Alison Ogden, Elise Kristine and Haley Gosserand from Sweet Seduction kicked off the night with some tight choreography and soaring vocals for Mariah Carey's "Emotions," they were excited to get feedback. When Payne greeted them, the trio enthusiastically waved back in unison. "Hi, Liam! I love you!" Gosserand gushed, evoking a chuckle from Payne. Earlier she'd revealed One Direction posters once decorated the wall above her bed. He wanted to "to see more togetherness," perhaps intuiting the power imbalance among the group, but "other than that, fantastic," he pronounced the girl group. During the judges' critiques, Mason Watts from Midnight Til Morning told Payne his family had won a competition in Australia to see One Direction from the front row at Madison Square Garden. "My sisters are obsessed with you," he said. "And ever since that moment, I wanted to be in a group. And it's kind of a full-circle moment to be here with a group and performing in front of you, so thank you, man." Payne, ever the good sport, waved at one of the cameras to say, "Hi sisters!" Later, he turned to Rowland. "I feel all warm," Payne said. Five people, including hotel employees and Payne's friend Roger Nores, who was staying with him at the hotel, were charged in the aftermath. Charges were dropped against all but two of the employees, who allegedly supplied Payne with drugs in the days before his death.

THE LEGEND OF ZELDA Live-Action Movie Casts Link and Zelda, Alas Hunter Schafer Not Involved

A live-action The Legend of Zelda movie has been a long time in the making. It has been a number one request from fans for years. We learned about the movie was actually happening all the way back in 2023. And, of course, the number one question that followed the announcement was, 'Who would play Link and Zelda in the live-action movie?' But we received no word about casting, leaving plenty of room for speculation… Until now. The live-action The Legend of Zelda movie has finally cast its Link and Zelda. Interestingly enough, despite many high-profile names being tossed around, the live-action Zelda movie has gone with two relatively unknown actors. Let's take a look at who has been cast. Who Will Play Link in the Live-Action Movie? Although his name isn't in the title, our hero Link is an important character. In the live-action The Legend of Zelda movie, Link will be played by Benjamin Evan Ainsworth. Benjamin Evan Ainsworth might be best known to Nerdist readers as the creepy kid from Mike Flanagan's Netflix show, The Haunting of Bly Manor. Now, he'll be much less eerie and much more epic as he takes on maybe the most iconic video game leading man ever, Link. We can see the vision in this The Legend of Zelda live-action movie casting choice. Who Will Play Princess Zelda in the Live-Action Movie? The Legend of Zelda fans REALLY hoped that Hunter Schafer would play Princess Zelda in the live-action The Legend of Zelda movie. And we must admit, casting Hunter Schafer would have been a really perfect decision. Schafer is super talented, and we'd have loved to see a transgender person cast in such a high-profile role. But, alas, it was not to be. The Legend of Zelda has instead cast Bo Bragason as its live-action Princess Zelda. You might know Bragason from Disney+'s Renegade Nell, and we're excited to see what she can do. Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto Is Excited By the Link and Zelda Casting for Movie Nintendo Head Shigeru Miyamoto shared some words of praise for the this duo on social media. He noted, 'This is Miyamoto. I am pleased to announce that for the live-action film of The Legend of Zelda, Zelda will be played by Bo Bragason-san, and Link by Benjamin Evan Ainsworth-san. I am very much looking forward to seeing both of them on the big screen. The film is scheduled to be released in theaters on May 7, 2027. Thank you for your patience.' Well, if this The Legend of Zelda live-action movie casting decision is good enough for Shigeru Miyamoto, we suppose it's good enough for us. More About the Upcoming Movie So far, we know that The Legend of Zelda will release on May 7, 2027. It will be directed by Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes' Wes Ball. We don't know much about the plot of The Legend of Zelda yet, but we assume it will follow the story of Link and Zelda as they battle evils across the kingdom. Solve the daily Crossword
