Hidden Master: The Legacy of George Platt Lynes review – eye-opening snapshot of New York's queer scene

The Guardian07-07-2025
George Platt Lynes was an American photographer who lived in Paris in the 1920s and then mostly in New York City for the rest of his life; he died in 1955. A gay man who was very out by the standards of the times, he was right in the middle of the one of the most flamboyant bohemian queer scenes of the period. And, man, did he have fun, shagging up a storm and taking nude pictures of beautiful men and women (but mostly men) when he wasn't earning work shooting fashion spreads for Vogue magazine. This documentary, directed by Sam Shahid, introduces his life and work in a deeply respectful, straightforward way, splicing in hundreds of examples of his mostly black-and-white pictures with curators, admirers and some surviving friends and acquaintances. Notable interviewees include portrait artist Don Bachardy, and the painter Bernard Perlin, seen in archive footage given he died in 2014, who was a very close friend of Platt Lynes and the executor of his artistic estate.
Like so many other documentaries about dead artists that require cooperation from the deceased's estate, this sometimes gets a little hyperbolic about its subject's talent. Which is not to say that Lynes' work isn't worth exploring and celebrating, not only for its aesthetic merits but also for the way it captures a specific time and place. His commercial work was classical and elegant, tinged with a surrealism he learned first hand from Man Ray himself. His nudes and frankly erotic material are gorgeously sensual with a chilly, sculptural quality whose influence can be traced in later photographers of male nudes like Robert Mapplethorpe.
Meanwhile, the snapshot the film offers of New York's queer scene in the 1940s and 50s – a shimmering fever dream of orgiastic (literally) cocktail parties, fuelled by passion and pomp – is an eye-opening delight. Lynes himself was in a long-running menage a trois with curator Monroe Wheeler and writer Glenway Wescott well before the word polyamorous was even coined, let alone 'throuple'. He was also very close to such figures as Gertrude Stein, who scolded him like a granny for dropping out of university, and Christopher Isherwood among others. His encounter with sexologist Alfred Kinsey (which became a friendship) resulted in the Kinsey Institute holding a significant chunk of Lynes' work, including a box marked 'private' that the curators teasingly insist they've never looked in out of respect for Lynes. The latter emerges as an irrepressibly charming figure, although perhaps not without a sinister, manipulative side that the film never really delves into.
Hidden Master: The Legacy of George Platt Lynes is in UK cinemas from 11 July.

Kylie Jenner roasts sister Kendall's viral cucumber cutting fail: 'Runs in the family'

Kylie Jenner poked fun at older sister Kendall's viral cucumber moment and joked that her bad cutting technique runs in the family. Back in 2022, during an episode of The Kardashians, the 29-year-old supermodel was seen grabbing a snack from the kitchen. Kendall decided to slice cucumber to nibble on - but the way she did so was soon mocked by fans on social media. Kendall's cutting technique showed the star placing her left hand on the far end of the snack while her right dominant hand was placed underneath to thinly cut some pieces. On Wednesday, Kylie, 27, decided to reminisce on the humorous moment while showing off her son Aire's culinary skills. The Kylie Cosmetics founder took a picture of her son, three, chopping a cucumber and posted the snap to her Instagram stories. The little one could be seen utilizing the same technique as his aunt, prompting Kylie to pen, 'runs in the family? @kendalljenner.' Kendall responded to the image by reposting it to her own Instagram stories and wrote, 'i knew he was mine!!!' The mom-of-two shares son Aire, as well as daughter Stormi, seven, with ex and rapper Travis Scott. However, it is not the first time that Kylie has poked fun at her older sibling's viral attempt to cut a cucumber. Late last year in November while promoting a new collection for her Khy clothing brand, the beauty mogul uploaded a clip as she recreated the moment. While donning a black sequin top as well as matching mini shorts, the star was filmed slicing cucumber the way her sister had done from the past Kardashians episode. Kylie also lip-synced to an audio snippet from the episode which played in the background of the reel. During the 2022 episode of Hulu's The Kardashians, Kendall was seen entering the kitchen where she joined her mom Kris as she grabbed a quick snack. Her momager offered to have the chef whip something up for her daughter, but the model insisted that she could make something herself. Kris warned her daughter to 'be careful' which prompted the 818 Tequila founder to admit that she was 'scared.' She then lifted her head to glance towards the camera amidst chopping and jokingly said, 'I am not a good cutter, so don't zoom in on me. I'm not professional whatsoever.' As Kris worriedly watched from across the island, she decided that her daughter most likely needed a bit of assistance. 'Hey chef!' she called out. 'Do you want to cut this up for her?' But Kendall insisted that she could do it and expressed that she was 'fine.' But the moment soon blew up on social media, with a number of fans offering their thoughts on the reality star's unique cutting skills. Over on X at the time, one penned: 'Kendall Jenner not knowing how to cut a cumber and Kris proceeding to call for the chef is hilarious to me.' Another wrote, 'Anytime you feel like you're bad at doing something, watch kendall jenner chop a cucumber,' while a fan added, 'Watching Kendall Jenner try to cut a cucumber was shocking and yet… not surprising they have no life skills.' 'About an hour ago, I witnessed Kendall Jenner attempt to cut a cucumber on my tv screen. It made me feel a little superior but mostly poor,' one shared. The model previously addressed the viral moment during an interview with the Wall Street Journal in 2023. 'Let me just say I successfully cut "The Cucumber." So if anyone says I cannot cut cucumber, I physically cut the cucumber and I did it tastefully. I didn't hurt anybody. So I can cut cucumbers.' Earlier this month, both Kylie and Kendall whisked themselves away for a lavish summer getaway along the French Riviera. The pair jumped to social media to give their fans a glimpse at the trip - including a moment as they grabbed a bite to eat at an outdoor restaurant. Kendall also uploaded a reel as she filmed herself taking a shot while balancing a Hermes purse on top of head. The limited edition Hermes Kelly Doll bag itself is notably estimated to be worth $50,000-$60,000, per Sotheby's. Kylie later also traveled to Greece and was accompanied by her two children as they soaked up the sun on a spacious yacht.

WNBA star Sophie Cunningham brutally mocks league bosses after being punished for TikTok video

Indiana Fever star Sophie Cunningham has slammed the WNBA after revealing she was fined $500 for criticizing referees. The guard, who has been christened Caitlin Clark 's 'enforcer' this season, recently released a TikTok in which she called out 'some refs' in the league. Clark is among the other stars to have clashed with officials but Cunningham has now been punished over her comments. In the viral video, she wrote '@ some refs' while mouthing a line from Sabrina Carpenter's hit, 'Manchild.' The lyrics she lip-synced were: 'Stupid. Or is it slow? Maybe, it's useless' On Wednesday, Cunningham took to social media once more to reveal her punishment and mock the WNBA. 'I got fined $500 for this TikTok,' Cunningham wrote on X alongside several laughing emojis. I got fined $500 for this TikTok 🤣🤣 idk why this is funny to me… like ok 👍🏼 you got it bud! Cause there's not more important things to be worried about with our league right now — Sophie Cunningham (@sophaller) July 23, 2025 'Idk (I don't know) why this is funny to me…like ok (thumb emoji) you got it bud! Cause there's not more important things to be worried about with our league right now.' She then reposted a reply that read: 'The endless WNBA war on the people who are bringing attention to their product while protecting the behavior that turns people off NEVER ceases to amazed me.' The Fever star did not specify what she meant by 'more important things.' But her comments come amid tension between the WNBA and its players over a new collective bargaining agreement. At least week's All-Star Game, Clark and many of her WNBA rivals staged a protest. They wore t-shirts which read: 'Pay Us What You Owe Us' Cunningham previously made headlines after criticizing the WNBA's expansion plans. Earlier this season, the league announced plans to add teams in Cleveland (2028), Detroit (2029) and Philadelphia (2030). 'You want to listen to your players, too. Where do they want to play? Where are they going to get excited to play and draw fans?' Cunningham said. 'I do think that Miami would have been a great (location). Nashville is an amazing city. Kansas City, amazing opportunity.' She continued: 'I'm not so sure what the thought process is there, but at the end of the day, you want to make sure that you're not expanding our league too fast. 'I think that that's also another thing. It's kind of a hard decision-making situation. But man, I don't know how excited people are to be going to Detroit or (Cleveland).'
