The 15 most valuable cassettes to own in July 2025
Proving once again that rarity, influence, and a good story can make plastic and magnetic tape worth a fortune, what was once considered a 'dead format' has found a new lease of life, popularised by some of the biggest chart-topping names in recent years, through to up-and-coming acts dubbing tapes on their parents' stereo. At least, we used to do that... there's probably an app for that now, correct?
We've searched the annals of Discogs once again this month to find 15 more releases on cassette tape that fetched a huge sum in recent years, basing our findings on the highest sold price in the online marketplace's history. That means that though it did sell for that price originally, it's still worth undertaking your due diligence to check back in and see if there is still a demand for your items.
That is, sadly, the nature of collecting.
So, what did we find this month that commanded a huge figure to own on the humble old magnetic format?
1 . Alex G – Trick (2013) – £82.49
This cassette marks a significant early release from indie rock's influential cult hero, Alex G. Originally released on the independent Haze Tapes, early pressings were produced in very limited, often coloured, batches. 2 . Bad Brains – Bad Brains (1982) – £86.21
A cornerstone of hardcore punk, Bad Brains' self-titled debut album was originally released on cassette by ROIR. This red-shelled tape is a raw, blistering document of one of the most influential bands in punk and hardcore, renowned for their furious energy and pioneering sound. 3 . Slum Village – Fan-tas-tic (1999) – £97.50
This limited early release from the revered hip-hop group Slum Village is a crucial piece for any serious collector. Katy Perry fan COLLAPSES on stage prompting singer to ask for 'prayers'
A young fan collapsed on stage at Katy Perry 's concert on Sunday. Each night on her Lifetimes tour, the 40-year-old singer invites fans on stage to help her perform the 2011 single The One That Got Away. But the excitement was too much for one young fan, named McKenna, who passed out as Perry prepared to start the song. According to Billboard, the icon called McKenna and a pal down from the very top corner of Little Caesars Arena in Detroit, Michigan for the song. When the youngster collapsed she was attended to by members of the Perry's crew and venue medical staff as the songbird knelt down beside her. After she was taken from the stage, Perry pulled the other three young fans into a group hug for a prayer, saying: 'Dear God, we pray for McKenna, that she will come back fully and brighter and better than ever. Amen.' She added: 'It's so much. Sometimes you're so brave and you can get on stage, and it's overwhelming. I understand that feeling.' Later, she told the crowd: 'McKenna's doing great, by the way.' Meanwhile, two weeks ago, Katy suffered a scare during her concert in San Francisco when the mechanical butterfly she was riding through the air suddenly dropped a few feet. Katy quickly composed herself and resumed singing her song Roar, before declaring at the end of the track 'Not today Satan'. This comes after news Katy's ex Orlando Bloom will not have to testify in her legal dispute over her $15 million property. The 48-year-old actor recently announced his split from Katy, 40, and he will now not have to be deposed or take the stand in the upcoming trial, Us Weekly reports. In 2020, Katy bought the property from Carl Westcott, before he tried to back out of the deal, arguing that he was under the influence of painkillers when he signed the paperwork. He subsequently sued Bernie Gudvi, Katy's business manager, claiming that the deal was not legally enforceable. Katy's legal team always maintained that the agreement was valid and she took legal ownership of the property in 2024. However, Westcott has continued to pursue the issue and his legal team asked for permission to depose Bloom ahead of the trial, suggesting that he was relevant witness in the case. But those claims have been dismissed by the court, which believes the actor's insights could be obtained through a third party. Katy and Orlando announced their break-up in July, having been engaged since 2019. A statement read: 'Due to the abundance of recent interest and conversation surrounding Orlando Bloom and Katy Perry's relationship, representatives have confirmed that Orlando and Katy have been shifting their relationship over the past many months to focus on co-parenting. 'They will continue to be seen together as a family, as their shared priority is — and always will be — raising their daughter with love, stability, and mutual respect.' Meanwhile, Katy - who is one of the best-selling musicians in the world - has recently been linked to Justin Trudeau, the former Prime Minister of Canada. The duo were spotted been spending time together in Montreal, prompting speculation about their relationship status. A source told People: 'Their own personal responsibilities could make this relationship move slower than it would, but there are ways to see the other and still fulfill their parenting responsibilities.

Amber Davies blasts West End audience member for 'distracting everyone on stage'

Since winning the third season of Love Island in 2017, Amber has carved out a career in musical theatre. In the past few years, she's appeared in 9 to 5: The Musical, Bring It On: The Musical, Back to the Future: The Musical and Pretty Woman. The 28-year-old is also currently playing Jordan Baker in the West End production of The Great Gatsby at the London Coliseum. However, during a recent performance, Amber called out a woman who had broken a major rule of theatre etiquette and was using her phone during the show. Song Young-kyu, star of one of Korea's highest-grossing films ever, dies aged 55
South Korean actor Song Young-kyu, best known for starring in Extreme Job, has died aged 55. The actor was found unresponsive inside a parked car in Cheoin-gu, Yongin, south of the capital Seoul, around 8am local time, according to authorities. Police have confirmed there were no signs of foul play, and no suicide note was found, as reported by Variety. It was also said that the actor's body was discovered by an acquaintance. Song first rose to fame starring on stage in the children's musical Wizard Mureul in 1994. Over the subsequent three decades he appeared in theatre productions, movies and TV shows. But it was his role as Chief Choi in the 2019 film Extreme Job – which became one of South Korea's highest grossing films ever – which gained him international attention too. Throughout his career, Song also had notable roles in Trick, Stove League, Baseball Girk and Hyena. However, in June this year, he was put under the spotlight after being involved in a DUI incident. More Trending The actor was caught driving five kilometres with a blood alcohol concentration high enough for license revocation under South Korean law in the city of Yongin. Song was referred to prosecution without detention but soon after stepped down from the stage production of Shakespeare in Love.
