19 releases from the Cool Britannia era that became incredibly valuable over the years
The Britpop revival has been underway for months, but it's really come into vogue after Oasis's triumphant, sometimes still unbelievable return in Cardiff last night. Those nostalgic moments many felt at the show will no doubt conjure up the zeitgeist of Cool Britannia; when Britain ruled the airwaves both sides of the Atlantic, interest in British music was at a level akin to the British Invasion of the '60s, and a number of acts were giving their US counterparts a run for their money. Then, of course, there were the numerous releases – which is what we're focusing on today. We've taken a look at Discogs, the online music marketplace, to see what releases from a number of Britpop acts are worth a small fortune – with one release in particular having sold for just over £800 previously on the website. Some of these records are incredibly rare, while others, for music fans of a certain age, might just be lounging in your collection begging to be played... or sold, depending on your feelings about the artists in 2025. So, what have been some of the most valuable records from the era of Cool Britannia, and what were the most they sold for through Discogs? Read on to find out! 1 . Echobelly - On (Vinyl, LP, Album Vinyl, 7_, 33 ⅓ RPM, 45 RPM, Single, Limited Edition - Rhythm King – FAUV 6 LX, Rhythm King – 7 FAUV 6, UK, 1995) Echobelly's sophomore album, On, released in 1995, cemented their status as sharp, melodic, and socially aware voices of the Britpop era. Led by the charismatic Sonya Madan, this record showcased their evolution from their debut with tracks like Great Things. This particular UK pressing, a limited edition LP with a bonus 7-inch single, is a highly sought-after item by collectors, having fetched a highest price of £85.02 on Discogs. | Getty Images/Discogs Photo Sales 2 . Sleeper - Smart (Vinyl, LP, Album Vinyl, 7_, 33 ⅓ RPM, EP All Media, Limited Edition - Indolent Records – SLEEPLP 007A, UK, 1995) The electrifying debut from Sleeper, Smart burst onto the Britpop scene with Louise Wener's witty lyrics and infectious indie-pop hooks. It's a foundational album for the band and a defining moment of the era. This UK limited edition LP, accompanied by a bonus 7-inch EP, is a prime example of a valuable original pressing, with a highest recorded sale on Discogs of £95.00. | Getty Images/Discogs Photo Sales 3 . Cast - All Change (2 × Vinyl, LP, Album, Limited Edition, Numbered, Stereo, Gatefold - Polydor – 529312-1, UK & Europe, 16 Oct 1995) Cast's debut, All Change, was an instant Britpop classic, soaring to number seven in the UK charts. With John Power's distinctive vocals and anthemic tunes, it perfectly captured the optimistic spirit of the mid-90s. This valuable pressing is a UK & Europe limited, numbered, and gatefold 2xLP set, making it a highly desirable and rare find for collectors, fetching a highest price of £100.00 on Discogs. | Getty Images/Discogs Photo Sales 4 . Ocean Colour Scene - (2 × Vinyl, LP, 45 RPM, Album, Gatefold - MCA Records – 60048, UK, 15 Sep 1997) Marchin' Already, released in 1997, continued Ocean Colour Scene's phenomenal success, becoming their second consecutive UK No. 1 album. It solidified their blend of mod-influenced rock and soulful melodies. This UK original 2xLP pressing, mastered at 45 RPM for superior sound quality and housed in a gatefold sleeve, is a premium item for collectors, with a highest sale price of £104.99 on Discogs. | Discogs/Getty Images Photo Sales Related topics: BoostMusicAlbumsArtistsVinyl

Acting randy, to be frank
Most of the radio serial (C8) reminiscence we're getting has been done to death, but not this American import recalled by Ralph Stone of Kellyville: 'When I was a strapping young teenager, Night Beat starring Frank Lovejoy as Randy Stone, a crime reporter covering the night rounds was very popular in the 1950s. No guessing what unfortunate nickname I received at school?' 'Being too young to know the radio serials (C8) of the 1950s, I can say I avidly followed Triple J's Dr Poo, and was even a card-carrying member of the fan club,' says Andrew Brown of Bowling Alley Point. 'The eighties were an odd time.' This begs the question, Andrew. Do you own a copy of Knees Ahoy? If not, Granny can see one on Discogs for $7.01. 'Speaking of perfect oxymorons (C8) there is of course the 'jumbo shrimp' but as professions go, who can go past the 'honest politician'?,' challenges Jack Dikian of Mosman. 'But then again they may just be 'clearly misunderstood'.' While Enid Murphy of Manly notes 'the diametrically opposed eras of The Flintstones and The Jetsons' and acknowledges 'their memorable introductory tunes', she also 'marvelled at those Jetsons' futuristic push button gadgets – especially for Jane's hair dos. Still waiting.' 'In addition to the jam tin and string communication system we used in our cubby house (C8), we would often 'borrow' the kerosene lamps that were hooked on poles around curbing and footpath works that the local council were doing,' says Greg Preston of Cherrybrook. 'The wonderful aroma of burning kero and the images that the flickering light displayed on the walls was magical. When empty, we would return them for refilling by the council for the next night's use.' 'The folks at Daydream Mine at Silverton spin a great yarn that when the copper ore at Burra (C8) started to run out, the miners left their dugouts and wheeled their barrows from Burra to Broken Hill and Silverton to work the mines,' writes Mark Baldwin of Terrigal. 'Life was tough back then, and the celebration of the event with the Burra to Broken Hill Wheelbarrow Push now shows that anyone who manages to push a wheelbarrow that distance can still rightly lay claim to being pretty tough.' 'Granny, please do something about George Manojlovic and his terrible puns,' implores Rob Balks of The Entrance. 'He should be hanged, drawn and quoted.'

Musical CDs: the 15 most wanted releases on compact disc in June, according to Discogs
Another month, another chance to rifle through your old CD collection to see what the most wanted items in the format are on Discogs for June 2025. With the UK summer festival season truly underway – Download Festival and Parklife taking place this week, and the mighty Glastonbury Festival at the end of the month – has that led to a change in what items users of the online marketplace are after? Or, is it much the same as last month? We've taken a look once again at the most wanted items on compact disc, and compact disc only (no LPs featuring CDs this time), to bring to you this month's essential items for collectors. And as always, if you're in the market to sell or buy one, a word of caution. Prices regarding musical releases can and do fluctuate, so keep an eye on both the highest price an item has sold for when looking through your catalogue you've uploaded to Discogs, and more importantly, take a look at the median (average) sales prices. Just because someone wants a certain release, doesn't mean that it might be worth the fortune you think. Maybe keep it in that instance? 1 . Deftones – Around The Fur ( Maverick – 9 46810-2, Warner Bros. Records – 9 46810-2) Around The Fur is a landmark album for nu-metal and alternative metal, showcasing Deftones' unique blend of crushing aggression and ethereal beauty. It's highly influential and has a dedicated cult following in the UK. Its atmospheric soundscapes and Chino Moreno's distinctive vocals make it a key album for fans of heavier alternative music, remaining a consistently sought-after CD. 🔎 1992 wants | Getty Images/Canva Photo Sales 2 . Gorillaz - Demon Days (Parlophone 0946 311688 2 6) Gorillaz, Damon Albarn's virtual band, became a global phenomenon with Demon Days, which reached number one on the UK Albums Chart and went multi-platinum. Its genre-hopping blend of hip-hop, indie, electronica, and rock, featuring an array of guest artists, produced massive hits like Feel Good Inc. and Dare. It was also one of the releases that caused the controversy surrounding copy protection on CDs at the time. 🔎 2023 wants | Getty Images/Discogs Photo Sales 3 . Twenty One Pilots – Regional At Best (Self Released) This self-released album is a unique case. While it predates their major label breakthrough, Regional At Best holds significant cult status among Twenty One Pilots' dedicated fanbase in the UK. Many of its songs were re-recorded for later albums, but this original version is highly sought after by collectors for its raw, unfiltered sound and as a piece of the band's early history. Its scarcity as a physical CD makes it genuinely "most wanted" by fans. 🔎 2025 wants | Getty Images/Discogs Photo Sales 4 . Oasis - (What's The Story) Morning Glory? (Creation Records CRE CD 189) Arguably one of (if not) the defining British album of the mid-90s. (What's The Story) Morning Glory? was a monumental commercial success in the UK, becoming one of the best-selling albums of all time here. It spawned anthems like "Wonderwall," Don't Look Back In Anger, and Champagne Supernova that are still sung in pubs and stadiums across the country - and soon to be at Oasis' 2025 reunion shows. 🔎 2029 wants | Getty Images/Discogs Photo Sales Related topics: BoostMusicArtistsAlbums
