Labuan Courts Korean Tourists with Nature and Niche Travel

LABUAN: Labuan is positioning itself as a niche destination for South Korean travellers following a four-day familiarisation trip by senior executives from seven major travel agencies in South Korea.
Held from June 12 to 15, the visit aimed to showcase Labuan's unique tourism offerings, including golf, diving and island escapes, to develop tailored tour packages for the Korean market.
The initiative was jointly organised by Tourism Malaysia's Seoul and Sabah offices, the Labuan Tourism Information Centre, the Department of Tourism, Culture and Arts under Labuan Corporation (LC), As well as the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC), with support from local operators and hoteliers.
During the visit, the delegation explored key attractions such as renowned shipwreck and coral reef dive sites, the 18-hole Labuan International Golf Club and island destinations like Pulau Rusukan Besar.
They also toured leading accommodations including Tiara Labuan Hotel, Palm Beach Resort and Spa, AZ Hotel and Serviced Apartment, Beta Serviced Apartment and eco-tourism site Desa Tunas Hijau.
The Labuan Tourism Information Centre said the visit marked a strategic effort to tap into the growing demand among South Korean tourists for nature-based and experiential travel, with Labuan offering a peaceful, less-discovered alternative.
'What we offer is tranquillity, nature and niche experiences, from world-class diving and golf to quiet, pristine islands, which appeal to Korean travellers seeking destinations beyond the mainstream,' it said.
It added that connectivity via Kota Kinabalu and potential regional partnerships could help position Labuan as a preferred tropical getaway in the Borneo region.
South Korean travel representatives were optimistic about Labuan's potential, citing a growing interest in tropical destinations that combine relaxation and adventure.
The visit is expected to lead to new promotional content, tour packages and digital campaigns targeting the Korean market, boosting Labuan's visibility in Northeast Asia.

Top military chiefs meet to discuss regional security

The top military chiefs of South Korea, the United States and Japan met in Seoul, as US President Donald Trump piles pressure on Washington's allies over defence spending and trade. General Dan Caine, the top US military officer, held talks with his South Korean counterpart Kim Myung-soo, and Japan's General Yoshihide Yoshida, as part of an annual meeting on regional security yesterday. They discussed growing military ties between Moscow and Pyongyang, which has sent weapons and thousands of troops for Russia's war in Ukraine. The talks covered 'the potential transfer of military technology from Russia to the DPRK', the three military chiefs said in a statement which used North Korea's official name. Speaking at the start of the trilateral talks, Caine said that North Korea and China are both 'undergoing an unprecedented military build-up with a clear and unambiguous intent to move forward with their own agendas'. 'We need to be mindful of that, we need to be able to demonstrate resolve, to be entrepreneurial and proactive in our partnerships,' he added. Separately, the three countries conducted joint air drills yesterday over South Korea's Jeju island, involving a US B-52H strategic bomber, according to the defence ministry. Washington, Seoul's long-time security ally, stations around 28,500 troops in the South. The two countries signed a new five-year agreement in 2024 on sharing the cost of those troops, but this week Trump said South Korea is 'paying very little for the military'. South Korea's foreign ministry said this week that they were 'committed to faithfully implementing' the defence cost deal, 'which was validly concluded and has entered into force'. — AFP

Prize money doubled but pro clubs crowd A1 Semi-Pro League

KUALA LUMPUR: The A1 Semi-Pro League is set for a revamp next season, with prize money doubled from RM100,000 to RM200,000, but eyebrows are being raised over the influx of full-fledged professional teams. Amateur Football League (AFL) chairman Datuk Yusoff Mahadi said the financial boost is aimed at lifting the standard and intensity of the competition. "We've increased the prize money to RM200,000 for the new season. It's a 100 per cent jump. While it may not sound like much, it's a move to inject more excitement and competitiveness," said Yusoff, who is also FA of Malaysia (FAM) deputy president. However, the make-up of the 16 confirmed teams has triggered concerns, with several professional outfits and feeder squads included, raising questions about the league's semi-pro status. Among the teams are top-tier reserve sides JDT II and Selangor II, as well as Immigration II, Kelantan WTS, Armed Forces, Malaysian University, Manjung City, Bunga Raya, Perlis GSA, UM-Damansara United, Machan, and South Korean amateur outfit FC Seoul Phoenix. Also entering are former Super League sides Kedah Darul Aman and Perak, both of whom failed to obtain national licences. Their inclusion brings top-flight experience but adds to the growing imbalance. Under AFL rules, teams must have at least 10 contracted players to qualify as semi-pro. But Yusoff admitted many clubs are fielding fully professional squads. "Although the minimum is 10 contracted players, several teams have gone full professional. It's almost a pro league now, just under a semi-pro label," he said. The shift has led to concerns that the league — meant as a bridge between amateur and professional levels — is being skewed in favour of clubs with superior infrastructure, threatening its development-focused purpose.
