Body of veteran actress found days after her death
Ayesha Khan, 77, a celebrated figure of the drama industry, was found dead in her Gulshan-e-Iqbal apartment on Thursday evening. Police sources confirmed that the actress had likely passed away nearly a week before her discovery, with neighbours only informing police after a foul odour emanated from her residence.
According to officials, Ayesha, who lived alone, was believed to have died in her bathroom. Her children, who reside outside Karachi, were informed. The body was shifted to JPMC for medico-legal formalities before being moved to the Edhi morgue in Sohrab Goth.
Dr Summaiya Syed, the police surgeon, said that a post-mortem examination is pending, awaiting the arrival of her legal heirs. Police have classified the case as an unnatural death but found no immediate signs of foul play.
Born in 1948, Ayesha Khan was a pioneering actress of Pakistan Television (PTV), renowned for her compelling performances in classic dramas. Her career spanned over five decades, during which she played strong, nuanced female characters that left an indelible mark on the industry. She was also the elder sister of the late actress Khalida Riasat.
Ahmed Shah, President of the Arts Council of Pakistan, expressed deep sorrow over her demise, calling it a "great loss for Pakistani drama." Funeral arrangements will be announced once her family completes legal formalities. Ayesha's tragic and solitary passing has sparked debates about the welfare of aging artistes, raising questions about the industry's responsibility toward its veterans once the limelight fades.

Army kills 30 militants trying to cross from Afghanistan
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan's security forces have successfully thwarted a major infiltration attempt by Indian-sponsored militants in North Waziristan, the military's media wing, ISPR, said in a statement on Thursday. According to the statement, a large group of militants affiliated with the Indian proxy network 'Fitna al-Khwarij' attempted to infiltrate through the Pakistan-Afghanistan border in the Hassan Khel area during the nights of July 1–2 and July 2–3. The movement was promptly detected and responded to with precision by Pakistani forces. 'All thirty terrorists were neutralized in a precise and skillful engagement,' the ISPR said, adding that a significant cache of weapons, ammunition, and explosives was recovered from the site. The military praised the exceptional vigilance and professionalism of the troops involved, noting that their swift response averted a potential large-scale terrorist attack. The statement also urged the Interim Afghan Government to prevent the use of its territory by foreign proxies to launch attacks against Pakistan. Administration summoned over illegal demolition
Following the demolition of a building next to the Harno river despite the status-quo order issued by the court, the Additional District Judge has summoned the DPO Deputy Commissioner, Irrigation Director, GDA Director General and revenue staff including Assistant Commissioner and other relevant authorities to appear before it on July 16, 2025, for non-compliance. As per the specifics of the case, the Abbottabad administration had launched an anti-encroachment drive against constructions near the river in Harno following the tragic incident in which a group of 18 fell into the river during a flash flood in Swat. One particular building on the banks of the river was owned by Abid Ali, an overseas Pakistani, who had obtained a restraining order and completed the necessary legal documents. However, the administration proceeded with the demolition of Ali's building, after which filed a case against it. The Additional Sessions Judge has summoned the Deputy Commissioner Abbottabad, Captain (retd) Sanaullah Khan, Abbottabad DPO Omar Tufail, TMO Mian Shafique, GDA Director General and other relevant authorities to appear before the court on July 16, 2025. The appellants also filed a contempt of court application against the accused for non-compliance with court orders, following which the court has suspended the operation. The court will review the case and determine the next course of action. The outcome of the case may have significant implications for the administration's approach to demolitions. Meanwhile, Abid Ali has also lodged a complaint with overseas Pakistan foundation.

Status-quo: Chishti suffers Supreme Court reversal in battle for TRG Pakistan control
In a reversal for former TRG Pakistan CEO Zia Chishti, the battle for the control of PSX-listed TRG Pakistan Limited has taken a new turn with status-quo ordered by the Supreme Court of Pakistan (SCP) on a recent ruling by the Sindh High Court (SHC) in favour of Chishti. The SHC had issued a ruling on June 20, 2025 abating a $53 million tender by the company's largest shareholder Greentree Holdings, as well as annulling Greentree's shareholding and ordering elections. Greentree subsequently appealed the ruling at the SCP, which has led to an interim order asking all parties to maintain status quo. US arbitrator orders Zia Chishti to pay $9.1mn to TRG International TRG Pakistan's share price reacted immediately to the posting of the order on the Supreme Court's website, jumping by 7% on hopes of a quick resumption of the tender, before reaching at a more modest gain of 1% as investors digested the news of a legal battle through the SCP. Chishti had resigned from the company in late 2021 upon disclosure in US Congressional testimony of an arbitration award against him for sexual misconduct. The company's current management has maintained that any association of Chishti with the company would be damaging to its assets and reputation. At the same time, the company's Bermuda based affiliate TRG International has sought to remit to Pakistani shareholders the proceeds of sales of its stakes in its portfolio companies by way of share purchases by Greentree Holdings. Zia Chishti, The Telegraph settle libel suit over reporting of ex-employee's 'grooming' allegations Chishti had successfully challenged Greentree's remittance of funds and purchase of shares in the SHC, which has now been appealed in the SCP. With Chishti's takeover efforts for TRG Pakistan now at least delayed by the Supreme Court appeal process, the impact on former TRG Pakistan CEO's financial liabilities is unclear as Chishti's path to accessing the significant liquidity at TRG International has narrowed. With significant creditor liabilities ranging from the US tax authorities to bank defaults to arbitration fee awards, Chishti is estimated to owe over $30 million to various parties.
