Google's AI agent ‘Big Sleep' foils cyberattack in groundbreaking first, says Sundar Pichai
'New from our security teams: Our AI agent Big Sleep helped us detect and foil an imminent exploit. We believe this is a first for an AI agent - definitely not the last - giving cybersecurity defenders new tools to stop threats before they're widespread,' Pichai posted on X (formerly Twitter).
A new era in cybersecurity?
This marks a potential inflection point in cybersecurity, as AI shifts from passive defense — identifying threats post-breach — to proactive interdiction.
What's next for 'Big Sleep'
Google has not disclosed when Big Sleep was deployed or how long it has been operational. However, Pichai's post suggests this is just the beginning of more AI-driven defense tools that will be used across Google's ecosystem and offered to cloud clients.
This incident also raises questions about how governments, enterprises, and cloud service providers will collaborate with AI to stay ahead of increasingly sophisticated threat actors.
As cyberattacks grow more frequent and damaging, the use of advanced AI like Big Sleep may become standard across global IT defenses.

Google gives AI Mode a big shot in the arm with Gemini 2.5 Pro and Deep Research update
Google is rolling out some big changes to how Search works, and AI is right at the centre of it all. After teasing updates at I/O 2025, the company is now bringing some of them to life — starting with improvements to AI Mode, now powered by the newer Gemini 2.5 Pro model. But there's a catch: for now, these features are only available in the US, and only for users subscribed to Google's AI Pro or AI Ultra what's new? Google says this upgraded AI Mode is smarter and more helpful, especially when it comes to things like solving maths problems, writing code, or explaining difficult topics. It can understand context better and even lets you pick which version of Gemini you want to use based on your of the standout features is something called Deep Search. It's launching on desktop first and is meant for when you're looking up more complex topics — things like planning your finances, researching a health concern, or comparing options before a big purchase. Instead of just giving you links, Deep Search goes through different sources online, pulls information together, and shows you a detailed response with citations. It can also ask follow-up questions to clarify your intent before giving you the final answer. It's slower than normal search, but it aims to do the digging for you, saving time in the long run. However, all these tools are behind a paywall for now. Google says that's because of the higher costs involved in running these advanced AI systems. That said, it has hinted that more users may get access in the future, but there's no clear timeline feature worth noting is what Google calls 'AI-powered calling.' It's basically a virtual assistant that can call businesses for you in the background — checking things like service availability or pricing — and then summarise the information for you. So, if you're looking for a pet groomer or a plumber, you could just ask Google, and it'll do the calling and come back with the Google seems to be pushing towards a future where Search does more of the work for you, becoming more personal and less hands-on. It's clear that AI is a big part of Google's long-term vision. What's left to see is how soon these features roll out to more countries and users — and how competitors like Microsoft plan to respond.- Ends

Tech layoffs 2025: After Meta invests billions, Scale AI to lay off 200 employees
Scale AI is laying off around 200 full-time employees, which is about 14 per cent of its workforce. This comes just a month after Meta invested billions into the startup. The job cuts are part of a larger restructuring plan, the company has reportedly said, and will also affect 500 of its global contractors. 'We are streamlining our data business,' Scale spokesperson Joe Osborne said, confirming the layoffs that were first reported by Bloomberg. advertisementJason Droege, CEO of Scale AI also wrote an email to his employees, which was reviewed by The Verge. The email reads: 'The reasons for these changes are straightforward: we ramped up our GenAI capacity too quickly over the past year,'. 'While that felt like the right decision at the time, it's clear this approach created inefficiencies and redundancies. We created too many layers, excessive bureaucracy, and unhelpful confusion about the team's mission. Shifts in market demand also required us to re-examine our plans and refine our approach,' it the uninitiated, ScaleAI is based in the United States and helps tech giants like Google, OpenAI, Anthropic, and Meta label and process training data for their AI models. Much of this work relies on large teams of contractors, many of them working from outside the US. The layoffs come shortly after Meta announced a $14.3 billion deal for a 49 percent stake in Scale AI and brought in its former CEO, Alexandr Wang, to head a new superintelligence lab. That lab is now being filled with senior staff reportedly poached from other leading AI labs. Despite this close partnership, Scale AI has said it continues to operate news of the lay-off also comes just weeks after the company came under some serious criticism for its data security practices. An investigation by last month revealed that at least 85 Google Docs containing confidential client information and internal notes were publicly accessible. These documents reportedly included details from AI training projects with major tech firms such as Google, Meta, and Elon Musk's the exposed files were training prompts meant for improving Google's Bard chatbot (now Gemini), internal feedback on the models' weaknesses, and even a confidential xAI project called 'Project Xylophone' designed to help train AI on conversation styles. There were also audio files tied to Meta's chatbot addition to project details, some spreadsheets reportedly contained personal information of contractors, including emails, payment issues, and notes on performance. One document titled 'move all cheating taskers' listed hundreds of names flagged for suspected misconduct, and was editable by anyone with the recent leaks have raised concerns among some of Scale's biggest clients. While no formal fallout has been reported. However, according to a Business Insider report, some companies were reconsidering their partnerships in light of the breach.- Ends
