Where is John Mateer in latest Heisman Trophy odds?

Where is John Mateer in latest Heisman Trophy odds?

USA Today18 hours ago
The 2025 race for the Heisman Trophy is one of the most wide-open contests in recent history.
College football's most prestigious individual award won't be handed out until December, but there's already plenty of intrigue around this year's contestants.
That's because none of last year's four Heisman finalists are returning to college football this season. Colorado's Travis Hunter took home the award for the 2024 season, beating out his fellow finalists in Boise State's Ashton Jeanty, Oregon's Dillon Gabriel and Miami's Cam Ward.
Strangely enough, none of the next six highest vote-getters are returning to college either. Arizona State's Cam Skattebo, Army's Bryson Daily, Penn State's Tyler Warren, Colorado's Shedeur Sanders, Indiana's Kurtis Rourke, and Syracuse's Kyle McCord are all off to the NFL, meaning the top ten finishers in the Heisman vote from last year have are gone.
This means that there's plenty of opportunity for the next wave of collegiate stars to make a name for themselves. Once again, the top four vote-getters get to go to New York City for the Heisman presentation.
BetMGM has updated their Heisman Trophy odds earlier this week, and they reflect the chaos that could ensue in this year's race. Currently, it's Arch Manning of Texas who has the shortest odds to take home the trophy at plus-600, followed by Garrett Nussmeier (LSU) at plus-850 and Cade Klubnik (Clemson) at plus-900.
While Manning was a five-star prospect and has garnered plenty of hype due to his name, he's still unproven as a full-time starter in college football. Players like Nussmeier, Klubnik, and Drew Allar of Penn State (plus-1400) are all proven starters, but each needs to take the next step toward superstardom in 2025. The top non-quarterbacks in BetMGM's odds are wide receiver Jeremiah Smith of Ohio State (plus-1000) and wide receiver Ryan Williams of Alabama (plus-3500).
When it comes to Heisman pedigree, there are few programs that can go face-to-face with the Oklahoma Sooners. Seven OU players have hoisted the famous bronze statue. Those players are Billy Vessels (1952), Steve Owens (1969), Billy Sims (1978), Jason White (2003), Sam Bradford (2008), Baker Mayfield (2017), and Kyler Murray (2018).
The Sooner who has the best chance to join those legendary players this season is starting quarterback John Mateer, who would be the fourth Oklahoma QB to take home the award. Mateer's odds currently sit at plus-2500, which places him in a three-way tie for tenth. He has the same odds as Carson Beck from Miami and Sam Leavitt from Arizona State.
However, Mateer falls below players like Dante Moore at Oregon, LaNorris Sellers from South Carolina, Julian Sayin from Ohio State and DJ Lagway at Florida. Each of those quarterbacks are going off at plus-1800. Mateer will get to have quarterback duels with Manning, Nussmeier and Sellers in 2025, as well as Ole Miss' Austin Simmons and Alabama's Ty Simpson, who both have plus-4000 odds.
The Heisman will be decided this fall, not this summer. Mateer enters his first season with the Sooners, but it's his second season starting in new OC Ben Arbuckle's system and his third season in it overall, after he was a backup in 2023. He knows what his offensive coordinator wants and how to operate Arbuckle's Air Raid scheme.
Mateer's main focus will obviously be winning games this year. However, if he's able to help propel Oklahoma back to where it belongs, he could be in consideration for the ultimate individual hardware this year in what could be one of the wildest Heisman Trophy races of the past few seasons.

Johnson, Larsson and Ware shine in Heat's first win of 2025 Las Vegas Summer League

After going 6-0 in Las Vegas on the way to claiming last year's summer league championship, it took the Miami Heat three games to get its first victory of this year's Las Vegas Summer League. The Heat responded to an 0-2 start in Las Vegas with a 100-96 win over the Boston Celtics' summer squad on Monday at the Pavilion on UNLV's campus. The Heat found itself trailing by four points with 1:53 to play, but closed the game on a 13-5 run to rally for the victory. The Heat trio of center Kel'el Ware, guard Pelle Larsson and forward Keshad Johnson, who were all on Miami's roster last season and are under contract to be on Miami's roster this upcoming season, led the way on Monday. They combined to score 67 of Miami's 100 points in the win. After Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra called out Ware's professionalism and approach in the wake of his slow start to summer league, Ware has turned in two straight quality efforts. In Sunday's summer league loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers, Ware recorded 21 points on 8-of-14 shooting from the field, 2-of-3 shooting on threes and 3-of-5 shooting from the foul line, nine rebounds, one steal and three blocks in 27 minutes. On Monday, Ware again stood out with 21 points on 8-of-15 shooting from the field, 3-of-3 shooting on threes and 2-of-4 shooting from the foul line, 15 rebounds, two assists, two steals and one block in 33 minutes. Larsson continued his impressive showing in this year's summer league, closing the win with 24 points on 7-of-14 shooting from the field, 1-of-3 shooting on threes and 9-of-10 shooting from the foul line, two rebounds and six assists in 33 minutes. Monday marked Larsson's final summer league game of the year, as he's now set to join Sweden's national team to prepare for the EuroBasket 2025 tournament that begins on Aug. 27. Johnson contributed a solid and efficient stat line of 22 points on 8-of-10 shooting from the field, 2-of-4 shooting on threes and 4-of-4 shooting from the foul line, four rebounds, four assists, two steals and one block in 31 minutes. Among those still working for an NBA deal who stood out for the Heat's summer league team on Monday were forward Javonte Cooke and guard Erik Stevenson. Cooke totaled 11 points on 3-of-7 shooting from three-point range. Stevenson finished with eight points on 2-of-3 shooting from behind the arc, including the Heat's final five points of the game to seal the win. Both Cooke and Stevenson spent last season in the G League. Monday's game included some heated moments, as the Heat-Celtics rivalry apparently extends into summer league. Celtics guard Jordan Walsh was ejected after picking up two technicals in a span of seven seconds in the second quarter — one for exchanging words and a bump with Stevenson and another for a two-hand shove on Larsson. Heat rookie Kasparas Jakucionis, who was selected by Miami with the 20th pick in the first round of last month's draft, did not play on Monday. It marked the first game that Jakucionis, 19, has missed after playing in each of the Heat's first five summer league games. Jakucionis averaged 15 points, three rebounds, three assists and 1.5 steals per appearance while shooting 9 of 17 (52.9 percent) from the field and 5 of 11 (45.5 percent) from three-point range in the Heat's first two Las Vegas Summer League games before missing Monday's contest. He totaled just 12 points on 1-of-15 (6.7%) from the field, 0-of-11 shooting from three-point range and 10-of-12 shooting from the foul line in his first three summer league games at the California Classic. Among the Heat contingent in attendance for Monday's game in Las Vegas were Spoelstra, assistant coaches Chris Quinn, Malik Allen and Caron Butler, executives Adam Simon and Udonis Haslem, and newly acquired guard Norman Powell. The Heat (1-2 in Las Vegas) now enters a two-day break before playing its fourth of five summer league games in Las Vegas on Thursday against the Detroit Pistons' summer squad. The Heat's fifth and final game of summer league will come on either Friday, Saturday or Sunday, with the opponent, date and start time for that contest to be announced later this week.

Former Broncos starting quarterback suspended from current high school job

Former Denver Broncos quarterback Teddy Bridgewater has found himself on the wrong side of the news headlines as it was reported on Monday that he has been suspended from his job as a high school head football coach. Bridgewater is the current head coach at Miami Northwestern (FL) High School and is preparing to enter his second season in that role. Last year, he went 12-2 before leading his team to the FHSAA Class 3A state championship. Following the season, he was brought back to the roster of the Detroit Lions for the team's playoff run. Advertisement The suspension stems from Bridgewater paying for the player's Uber rides out of his own pocket, something he admitted himself in a post on Facebook. That opened an investigation, and it was determined that he provided impermissible benefits. It's unclear how long the suspension will last, but according to another post made by Bridgewater, he clearly disagrees with the decision. Bridgewater spent just one season in Denver, beating out Drew Lock for the starting job in 2021. He went 7-7 as the team's starter and threw for 3,052 yards with 18 touchdowns and seven interceptions. He was injured and suffered a concussion on this play late in the season against the Cincinnati Bengals and never played another down as the Broncos' quarterback. Advertisement That offseason, the team decided to go in a different direction, trading for Russell Wilson to pair with new head coach Nathaniel Hackett. Former NFL QB Teddy Bridgewater Suspended From Coaching Job

Former NFL QB Teddy Bridgewater Suspended From Coaching Job originally appeared on The Spun. Teddy Bridgewater's role as head coach of Miami Northwestern has reportedly been put on hold for a little while. Advertisement On Sunday the former NFL QB confirmed that he was suspended by his alma mater for allegedly providing impermissible benefits to his players. Saying via a Facebook post that he remains committed to the Bulls despite the hiccup. "The suspension came from MNW and it's impossible to suspend someone who doesn't work for you. So if im suspended from MNW im free to go to another school of my choice but IM NOT GOING ANYWHERE," Bridgewater wrote. "And if it comes down to it, I will volunteer from the bleachers like I used to in 2018 and 2019 when no one had a problem." The ex-Pro Bowler Bridgewater revealed earlier this month that he paid for Uber rides, meals and recovery services for his players last season (all of which he says he self-reported to the school). Advertisement Teddy led Northwestern to the Class 3A state championship in his first year as head coach before returning to the Detroit Lions to backup Jared Goff in late December. Bridgewater's suspension hasn't sat well with fans who felt he was doing what he could to support underserved players and his community.
