JOHOR BAHRU, June 21 (Bernama) -- A car belonging to a photographer from the Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) was damaged after being hit by explosion debris while he was covering a fire at a lorry and engine oil storage facility at Jalan Cenderai 27, Taman Kota Puteri, Masai, here today.
Mohd Hilmizudin Daud, 34, who is based at the Johor Bureau, did not expect that debris from the explosion would damage his Perodua Kelisa, which was parked about 100 metres from the scene.
He said the debris broke the left-side wing mirror and left dents and scratches on the same side of the car.
Mohd Hilmizudin, a father of one who is expecting a second child in early July, said he had no choice but to come to terms with the damage to the car that had been his faithful companion on countless assignments for the past three years.
'I only realised my car was damaged around 7 pm after I had completed my assignment. While I was shooting, there were many explosions and barrels even flew into the air, which I managed to capture.
'When I reached my car and started the engine to reverse, I noticed the left wing mirror was missing. Initially, I thought it had been folded back because someone might have leaned against the car,' he told Bernama.
Mohd Hilmizudin said he had rushed to the scene with his colleague, reporter Nur Fadhliana Shaari, at around 2 pm after being informed of the incident. He was relieved that they were not injured while at the scene.
'This is the first time something like this has happened in my 11 years as a Bernama photographer.

Kuala Terengganu OCPD Asst Comm Azli Mohd Noor said that two men, Ahmed Volkan Ata, the yacht's captain, and crew member Eser Demirkol, were missing, while the third crew member, Ates Demiroren, had been rescued. Before the incident, Captain Ahmed Volkan Ata had sailed the Daisy from Port Jackson Bay, Sydney, Australia, docking at Kuantan Port, Pahang, which served as a meeting point. The other two crew members joined from Krabi, Thailand, and Singapore, departing Kuantan for their voyage. "On July 28, at 5pm, the Daisy started its voyage and was supposed to arrive at its first checkpoint at Pattani Port, Thailand," he stated. However, the yacht encountered a storm in the waters off Pulau Yu at 2.30pm on Tuesday and is believed to have capsized, with only Ates Demiroren managing to save himself. The rescued victim is currently reported to be weak and is receiving treatment at Sultanah Nur Zahirah Hospital. The Marine Department, the Malaysia Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA), and the Turkiye Embassy have been informed of the incident for further action. "All matters involving the Turkish nationals will be managed entirely by the Turkiye Embassy, and the rescued victim will be transported home once his condition improves," he added. Terengganu MMEA director Capt (M) Hamiludin Che Awang said that the search and rescue operation was activated at 3pm, with a patrol boat dispatched to the location to search for the missing victims. – Bernama

Lithuanian Prime Minister Paluckas Steps Down

RIGA (Latvia), July 31 (Bernama-dpa) - Lithuanian Prime Minister Gintautas Paluckas said on Thursday he would step down amid growing pressure arising from allegations of conflicts of interest and nepotism, reported German Press Agency (dpa). "I have decided to resign from the office of prime minister," Paluckas announced in a statement, adding that he would submit his resignation to President Gitanas Nausėda shortly. Paluckas has increasingly come under fire due to allegations of dubious business dealings and faced calls for his resignation, including from one of the two coalition partners in his centre-left government. bootstrap slideshow Investigations are ongoing into past and present business dealings involving the 45-year-old, who, up until now, denied any conflicts of interest and dismissed the allegations as deliberate attacks by political opponents. Lithuanian media reported on Thursday that investigators had searched a company owned by Paluckas' sister-in-law. The company is alleged to have used European Union (EU) subsidies to purchase electric batteries from a company which is 49 per cent owned by Paluckas during his term as prime minister. In his statement, Paluckas said that he did not believe he had committed any serious wrongdoing during his term in office. However, he did not want to make the government and its work hostage to "scandals," he said. Paluckas, who also resigned as leader of the Social Democrats, had been prime minister of Lithuania since November 2024. Nausėda described his resignation as "the right decision."
