India needs a sharper push to power next GCC wave: DEA secretary
A targeted policy push, deeper Centre-state coordination and curriculum upgrades were among tasks lying ahead.
Speaking at the CII (Confederation of Indian Industry) GCC's Business Summit, Thakur said the core drivers of India's rise as a global hub for GCCs included strong physical and digital infrastructure, the Digital India mission, and a decade of regulatory reforms aimed at streamlining approvals, taxation, and compliance.
These interventions laid the foundation for India's dominance in the space, with over 1,800 GCCs now operating in the country, she said.
"Over the years initiatives like streamlined tax regulations, compliance procedures, all of this together, have built up this segment," she added.
Thakur also emphasized the need to study state-level success stories, particularly Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Telangana, to understand what early policy and infrastructure choices helped attract GCCs.
'Whether we need to replicate these models or enhance them further is something we need to deliberate today. Perhaps a bit of both,' she said.
The rapid expansion of GCCs into engineering, research and development (R&D), artificial intelligence (AI), and emerging technologies underscores the need for curriculum reform, Thakur added.
She also suggested the introduction of specialized engineering courses in ITIs and greater alignment between industry needs and academic training.
Highlighting that India's demographic advantage continues to play a critical role, with 2.1 million STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) graduates emerging annually, over 35% female participation in the sector, and a median workforce age of 28, she added that the talent pool needs better integration into national skilling initiatives.
Citing her experience in the ministry of corporate affairs, Thakur said programmes like the PM Internship Scheme suffered from slow uptake by the GCC sector due to delayed decision-making, despite their potential for mutual benefit.
"Unfortunately, the GCCs could not participate to the extent that we had expected, and we found the decision-making probably could have been faster," she added.
Thakur also flagged the importance of geographic diversification beyond traditional metro hubs, suggesting that many tier-2 cities with rich talent pools could become cost-effective alternatives with the right infrastructure and state support.
"Many of the states where we have a bulk of talented human resources, probably don't have the bulk of the GCCs, which could be there, which could be another way of (being) competitive on cost," she added.
As more global players, from beyond the US, look to India as a GCC destination, Thakur called for broader international outreach to attract newer businesses and investment.
She added the need to step up outreach to countries exploring GCC destinations and underscored the need for closer government-industry partnerships to shape supportive policy frameworks.

The chief minister further said that Hyderabad has become the preferred global destination for cutting-edge capability centres of the world's top pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies. The city is the life sciences capital of India, with the presence of over 2,000 companies, he added. Revanth said that by focusing on areas such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), automation, cloud computing and software product engineering, the site will contribute to solving some of the world's most pressing health challenges while also creating growth opportunities for local talent. The chief minister expressed commitment to providing a transparent, progressive and innovation-driven ecosystem so that the life sciences industry can grow in scope and change the health sciences capabilities for the entire world. Referring to the Eli Lilly workforce in Hyderabad, he said, 'You are not just living and working in Hyderabad – you are now part of our family. You are shaping the future of global healthcare from Hyderabad.' The company has already onboarded 100 professionals at the 220,000-square-foot Hyderabad facility and plans to expand the headcount to 1,500 over the next few years.

India office market set to cross one billion sq ft of office stock: Report
NEW DELHI: India's total office stock is set to cross one billion sq ft in office supply by Q3 2025, according to a recent report by Knight Frank india. According to the report, the cumulative office stock across the top eight Indian cities stood at 993 million sq ft as of H1 2025. From under 200 million sq ft in 2005 to nearly one billion sq ft in 2025, office supply has grown at a CAGR of 8.6% in the last 20 years. Bengaluru , with 229 million sq ft, accounts for 23% of India's total office stock and continues to lead among metro cities. It is followed by the National Capital Region (NCR) with 199 million sq ft (20%), and Mumbai with 169 million sq ft (17%). These three regions collectively contribute to 60% of India's office supply. Hyderabad, Pune, and Chennai together account for 33% of the stock, while Ahmedabad and Kolkata contribute the remaining 7%. Shishir Baijal, chairman and managing director of the company said, "As we prepare to cross the 1 billion sq ft threshold, it's not just a number, it reflects the growing institutionalisation, maturity, and global relevance of India's office market." India's office inventory is currently valued at ₹16 trillion (USD 187 billion). Of this, Grade A office space makes up 53%, followed by Grade B at 43%, and Grade C at 4%. Cities such as Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Chennai have a higher share of Grade A assets, driven largely by IT and Global Capability Centre (GCC) demand. In contrast, legacy markets such as Mumbai and NCR have a more balanced distribution across grades. Kolkata has the highest concentration of Grade C spaces, at 11%, indicating a need for asset upgrades and redevelopment in the region. One distinguishing factor for India's office market is its cost advantage. Average rents are expected to decline to USD0.96 per sq ft per month in 2025, reinforcing India's reputation for cost-efficiency on the global stage. This affordability, combined with a rising supply of Grade A space, has fueled the growth of GCCs and strengthened India's position in multinational real estate strategies. The report forecasts that India could add its next one billion sq ft of office stock between 2036 and 2041, depending on the pace of market expansion. Under a high-growth scenario of 12.7% CAGR, this milestone could be achieved by 2036, while a more conservative estimate of 10.9% CAGR would place the next threshold by 2041.

Kerala unveils first neurodiversity-friendly co-working hub at Kochi metro station
KOCHI: Kerala is opening its first neurodiversity-friendly coworking space, designed to create an inclusive workplace for people with diverse needs. Called 'i by Infopark', the 48,000 sq ft facility is located at Ernakulam South Metro Station here. It can host more than 550 professionals and offers flexible work areas with modern amenities, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said on Monday. He said the project would serve as a model for the future and be expanded across the state to boost innovation and create jobs. "Spread over an area of around 48,000 square feet, the facility offers 582 seats, high-speed internet, 100 per cent power backup, and 24/7 security, along with a professional reception, cafeteria, office pods, meeting zones, and a wide range of other services," the Chief Minister said in a Facebook post. Another key feature is its rental arrangements, which allow office spaces to be customised to suit business needs, he said. The primary target groups are gig workers, freelancers, multinational companies, IT/IT-enabled service providers, and companies looking to set up Global Capability Centres (GCCs) in Kerala, Vijayan said. If the project proves successful, the government plans to set up similar centres across the state, he added.
