Construction Of India's First Indigenous Hovercraft For Coast Guard Begins At Goa Shipyard
The construction of the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) first indigenously built Air Cushion Vehicle (ACV) was kicked off on Wednesday with the Girder Laying and Commencement of Erection ceremony at Chowgule & Company Pvt. Ltd. in Goa, as per a Ministry of Defence statement. The hovercraft, developed using established Griffon Hoverwork designs, is being customised for diverse coastal security tasks. Once deployed, these ACVs will offer improved speed, greater tactical versatility, and the ability to operate in shallow waters, allowing for rapid response in patrolling, interdiction, and search and rescue operations along India's extensive maritime borders. The Girder Laying and Commencement was held in the presence of Deputy Director General (Materiel & Maintenance), ICG Inspector General Sudhir Sahni. The construction of the hovercraft follows a contract signed with the Ministry of Defence on October 24, 2024, for six ACVs, underscoring the ICG's drive towards operational self-reliance under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative. India's indigenous defence production has surged to an all-time high of Rs 1.46 lakh crore, with exports increasing to a record Rs 24,000 crore in 2024-25, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said recently. "Our defence production, which was only Rs 43,000 crore 10 to 11 years ago, has now crossed a record figure of Rs 1,46,000 crore, with the private sector's contribution at over Rs 32,000 crore. Our defence exports, which were around Rs 600-700 crore 10 years ago, have surpassed a record figure of Rs 24,000 crore today," he said. The Defence Minister described Make-in-India as crucial for security and prosperity, stating that the use of indigenous systems during Operation Sindoor has proved that India has the power to penetrate any armour of the enemy. He further stated that the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) programme execution model, will open an opportunity for the private sector to participate in a mega defence project along with public sector companies for the first time, further bolstering the Make in India drive in the defence industry, which played a key role in the success of Operation Sindoor.

Why Bangalore Rural in Shivakumar's crosshairs as Congress revs up its ‘vote fraud' campaign
THE CONGRESS Wednesday announced a protest in Bengaluru on August 4, culminating with a submission to the Election Commission, over its claims of 'vote theft' in a constituency in Karnataka in last year's Lok Sabha polls. Rahul Gandhi, who has been raising the issue of alleged vote fraud, will be part of the protest. Addressing reporters recently, Gandhi had said: 'In Karnataka, we have found 'bhayankar chori (massive theft)'. I will show it in black and white to you and the Election Commission.' He said the Congress had done a six-month 'deep dive' into one constituency's voting and results, and 'uncovered their whole system, how they do it, who votes, and from where new voters are brought'. Following Gandhi's statement, Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar claimed to have made a detailed investigation regarding voting in the Bangalore Rural Lok Sabha constituency, and said a lot of 'golmaal' was done there. Bangalore Rural was one of the most-watched contests in Karnataka during the Lok Sabha polls, with Shivakumar's brother and sitting MP D K Suresh fighting to retain his seat. The BJP candidate was first-timer C N Manjunath, a renowned cardiologist and, more importantly, the son-in-law of former prime minister H D Deve Gowda. The import of who won went beyond the seat as Bangalore Rural had been considered the dominion of the DK brothers for over a decade. While Shivakumar has represented Kanakapura, one of the eight Assembly seats that comes under the Bangalore Rural parliamentary seat in the past, Suresh had won the 2014 and 2019 Lok Sabha elections from the seat. Similarly, the seat was crucial for the Deve Gowdas, the JD(S) first family, as the constituency was once seen as a Vokkaliga bastion of the party. Both H D Deve Gowda and son and ex-CM H D Kumaraswamy have been elected from Bangalore Rural at different points in the past. Shivakumar's rise as a Vokkaliga strongman rivalling the Deve Gowdas added another layer to the contest. During the Lok Sabha campaign, the BJP-JD(S) went all out in Bangalore Rural, holding public meetings and door-to-door campaigns. Their efforts paid off as Manjunath beat Suresh by over 2 lakh votes – a stunning reversal from 2019 and 2014, when Suresh had defeated his BJP rivals by similar margins. The BJP later said the result was not a surprise to the party at all. Its Ramanagara district president Anandaswamy said the alliance was able to cash in on three major factors: Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 10-year track record, Deve Gowda's popularity, and Manjunath's service as a cardiologist. For Shivakumar, Suresh's defeat was personally a setback too, in his barely concealed push to become the CM.

Lord Jagannath ‘Doormat' On AliExpress Sparks Massive Outrage: ‘Shameless...Disrepecting Hinduism'
Last Updated: The floor mat has hurt the religious sentiments of many Hindus, particularly in Odisha, where Lord Jagannath is deeply revered. A doormat featuring the image of Lord Jagannath, one of the most sacred deities in Hindu culture, has sparked outrage after being listed on Chinese-owned e-commerce platform AliExpress. The floor mat, meant for wiping feet, has hurt the religious sentiments of many Hindus particularly in Odisha where Lord Jagannath is deeply revered. Photos of the product, which display the deity's face printed on the mat along with an image of someone stepping on it, have been widely circulated on social media. The listing describes it as a 'Non-slip soft water uptake carpet" and shows a price of around Rs 787. Outraged to see the sacred image of Mahaprabhu Jagannath on a doormat that @AliExpress_EN is selling. As an Odia and one among millions of devotees, this is unacceptable. It's just the latest in a…— Baijayant Jay Panda (@PandaJay) July 30, 2025 Strong Reactions Madhab Pujapanda, a former member of the Shree Jagannath Temple Management Committee, expressed outrage over the product. He urged the temple administration to alert both the Odisha state government and the central government and also called for diplomatic intervention with Chinese authorities to put an end to the sale of such disrespectful items. 'This is not just an isolated case. There is a growing pattern where sacred Jagannath-related terminology like Mahaprasad and Patitapaban Bana are being misused for profit. Though steps have been initiated to legally protect these religious symbols and terms, the process needs to be accelerated," Pujapanda told Sambad. Former MP and Biju Janata Dal (BJD) leader Amar Patnaik also spoke out against the product. 'I vehemently condemn the egregious act of selling doormats with the sacred image of Lord Jagannath on AliExpress! This shameless profanity is an affront to the deepest sentiments of millions of devotees, trampling upon the revered iconography with utter disregard. It's a desecration of the highest order, and those responsible must be held accountable," Patnaik wrote on X (formerly Twitter). 'The fact that Lord Jagannath's image is being used as a mere commodity is a stark reminder of the blatant disrespect towards Hinduism. Immediate action is imperative to rectify this egregious wrongdoing and restore dignity to the revered deity," he added. One user commented, 'What is this Ali Express? You are selling doormats featuring Lord Jagannath, a deeply revered deity worshipped by Hindus across the world. Take it down immediately. This is a shameful act of disrespect by AliExpress." Another wrote, 'We do not support or endorse the sale of such items and strongly urge sellers to consider the cultural and spiritual implications of their products. Respect for faith and tradition must always come before profit." Several people pointed out that the act seemed intentional. 'People really don't have any common sense, I think this is done knowingly," someone said while a person added, 'Time and again these companies do such shameful act. They only do purposely to gain popularity by hurting Hindu's sentiments." 'Ali Express this is disrespect of 2 billion Hindus worldwide! Remove it immediately!" an individual stated. Lord Jagannath is regarded as a form of Lord Krishna, the eighth incarnation of Vishnu. Known as the 'Lord of the Universe," he is worshipped along with his elder brother Balabhadra and sister Subhadra. The Jagannath Temple in Puri, Odisha, is a major centre of devotion and pilgrimage. One of the most important festivals associated with the deity is the annual Ratha Yatra in Puri. During this grand celebration, the three siblings are taken out in decorated chariots and pulled through the streets by thousands of devotees. view comments Location : Delhi, India, India First Published: July 30, 2025, 15:07 IST News viral Lord Jagannath 'Doormat' On AliExpress Sparks Massive Outrage: ' Hinduism' Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
