EAM Jaishankar holds talks on regional developments with Armenian FM
New Delhi [India], June 13 (ANI): External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar met Minister of Foreign Affairs of Armenia Ararat Mirzoyan in Marseille.
The two discussed regional developments in their meeting on Thursday.
In a post on X, he said, 'Pleased to meet FM Ararat Mirzoyan of Armenia in Marseille today. A useful discussion on our close cooperation and regional developments.'

On March 11, India and Armenia signed two major Memoranda of Understanding during the visit of Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan, to India.
An MOU was signed between India's Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) and Armenia's Center of Drug and Medical Technology Expertise (CDMTE) on cooperation in regulating medical products.
Another MOU was signed between the Sushma Swaraj Institute of Foreign Service and the Diplomatic School of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Armenia on cooperation.
Armenia FM Mirzoyan held a meeting with EAM S Jaishankar on Monday and exchanged views on regional and global matters of shared interest.
During the meeting, the two leaders reviewed the whole range of growing India-Armenia bilateral cooperation, including in the areas of political exchanges, trade, economy, connectivity, education, culture, and people-to-people contacts.
'The two ministers held productive discussions where they reviewed the whole range of growing India-Armenia bilateral cooperation, including areas of political exchanges, trade, economic, connectivity, education, culture, and people-to-people contacts. They agreed to explore cooperation in digital technologies and pharmaceuticals. The discussions also focused on multilateral cooperation at the UN and other fora. The Ministers also exchanged views on regional and global matters of shared interest,' the Ministry of External Affairs stated.
In his opening remarks at the meeting, Minister Mirzoyan thanked Jaishankar for the invitation and the warm welcome received in India.
He said, 'It's always a great pleasure to have the opportunity to exchange views on our bilateral agenda and regional and global processes with you. Let me congratulate you on your cricket team's recent victory in the ICC. It's an important and quite symbolic event.' (ANI)

Kolkata Gangrape Case: Police detained Union Minister and West Bengal Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) President Sukanta Majumdar on Saturday while he was protesting against the alleged horrific gangrape incident at South Calcutta Law College in Kolkata. The case came to light on Friday, and so far, four individuals have been arrested in connection with the case. "This is the face of democracy in West Bengal. Mamata Banerjee has ruined democracy in the state... The National Commission for Women (NCW) on Friday took suo motu cognisance of the incident. NCW Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar expressed deep concern and wrote to the Commissioner of Police, Kolkata, urging a time-bound investigation under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). In her letter, Rahatkar demanded full medical, psychological, and legal support for the survivor and requested that authorities ensure compensation is provided under Section 396 of the BNSS. Four Arrests Earlier, the police had arrested three accused within 24 hours; they are named as Monojit Mishra (31), Zaib Ahmed (19), and Pramit Mukhopadhyay (20), who were former students or staff members of the same law college. On Saturday, Kolkata Police also arrested the guard of the South Calcutta Law College. As per ANI, the police said, "Guard of the Law College, Pinaki Banerjee (55) has also been arrested in the case." Political Row The alleged gangrape has triggered a political row between the leaders of the ruling TMC and the opposition BJP. While, BJP MLA Shankar Ghosh demanded Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's immediate resignation on Saturday, over the alleged Kolkata gang rape case. Speaking to ANI, Ghosh said, "This incident reveals the character of TMC, their thoughts towards women. I demand the immediate resignation of Mamata Banerjee as the CM of West Bengal. Under her rule, no one is safe." On the other hand, BJP leader Amit Malviya, in a post on X, alleged that one of the accused, Mishra, has ties with TMC.

‘Secular' and ‘socialist' not core to Indian culture: Union minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan
Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Friday claimed that the words 'secular' and 'socialist' are not core to Indian culture and called for a discussion on their removal from the Constitution. The Bharatiya Janata Party leader's comments come a day after the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh called for a review of the inclusion of these two terms in the Preamble. The RSS is the parent organisation of the ruling BJP. The words 'socialist' and 'secular' were not part of the Constitution adopted in 1950 and were added in 1976 through the 42nd constitutional amendment. Chouhan made the statement while addressing an event in Uttar Pradesh's Varanasi, marking 50 years since the Emergency was declared by former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi's government in 1975. In a video shared on social media, he said: 'The core of Indian culture is equal respect for all religions and not secular.' Talking about socialism, the former chief minister of Madhya Pradesh added that believing everyone to be like oneself is a core Indian thought. 'There is no need for socialism here,' he said. 'We have all said for long that all should be treated alike. Meanwhile, on Friday, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi criticised the RSS for seeking a review of the two words in the Preamble, saying that the Hindutva organisation's ' mask had come off again '. The Communist Party of India (Marxist) also said on Friday that the Hindutva organisation's 'proposal' ' exposes the RSS' long-standing objective of subverting the Constitution and its intent to transform India into a Hindu Rashtra, in pursuit of its Hindutva project.' In 2015, a controversy erupted after the BJP-led Union government's newspaper advertisements on Republic Day featured a Preamble with the two words omitted. In September 2023, Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury claimed that the two words were missing from the Preamble in the copies of the Constitution distributed to the MPs in the new Parliament building. In November, the Supreme Court rejected a batch of petitions seeking the deletion of the two terms from the Preamble to the Constitution. The court said there was no legitimate justification for challenging the constitutional amendment several decades later.
