What is it? The Cupra Tavascan is, yes, yet another electric SUV which will be compared with the Tesla Model Y. The big difference here is that the Tavascan is Spanish. Sort of. All Cupras are designed in Barcelona (the brand is a spin-off from VW Group's Spanish SEAT car company) and many are built there, though this one is put together in China, like 70 per cent of the world's EVs. The name is an homage to Catalonia, or at least to the small village of Tavascan within that Spanish region.
What does it cost? It's $74,490 plus on-road costs for the dual-motor VZ model we sampled, plus another $800 for the premium paint (Tavascan Blue) on our car. The more affordable Endurance, with a single motor and a longer range, starts at $60,990 plus on-road costs.

Zeekr's new mid-sized SUV to arrive in Australia

Don't miss out on the headlines from On the Road. Followed categories will be added to My News. Tesla's hold on Australia's electric vehicle market is set to face a fresh challenge with the arrival of Zeekr's medium-sized electric SUV. The Chinese manufacturer will launch its new Zeekr 7X model in coming weeks, positioning the car as a direct rival to the Tesla Model Y, BYD Sealion 7, and other popular mid-size electric SUVs already available in the country. Zeekr launched in Australia with the smaller X, a compact SUV that doesn't match the space of Tesla's best-selling Model Y. But the new model is ready to take on the top EVs in the market today. Building on the momentum from its recent launch in Hong Kong, the Zeekr 7X has strong potential in Australia. 2025 Zeekr 7X. (Picture: Supplied) MORE: The new EVs for Elon haters The company believes the 7X will carve out its niche with its focus on spaciousness and premium features. There will be three distinct models heading to Australia's shores: the Rear-Wheel Drive (standard range), the Rear-Wheel Drive Long Range, and the Performance All-Wheel Drive variants. The standard RWD model has a 71 kWh battery paired with a powerful 310kW/440 Nm rear motor, delivering a claimed range of 480km. If you're looking for more than that, the RWD Long Range model retains the robust 310kW motor while introducing a 94kWh battery, which boosts the WLTP range to 615km – a substantial 28 per cent increase. Finally, the Performance AWD trim keeps the 94 kWh battery while adding an additional front electric motor, which increases the total output to 475kW and 710 Nm of torque. This allows for impressive acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.8 seconds. However, this performance is accompanied by a slight reduction in driving range, now 543 km, based on WLTP standards. The 7X promises a higher level of luxury compared to the Tesla, featuring amenities such as 'polar bear' air suspension with variable height adjustment (only available in the All-Wheel-Drive variant), Nappa leather interiors, and advanced cabin technology. (Picture: Supplied) We tested the model in a sneak preview earlier this year, when Matt Campbell found that the car has 'all the ingredients to get it right' – as long as Zeekr can price the car competitively. Though pricing has not been officially announced, speculation suggests the 7X Rear-Wheel Drive model could start at approximately $65,000 to $70,000 before on-road costs. The Rear-Wheel Drive Long Range version is expected to be priced around $75,000, while the All-Wheel Drive variant is likely to fall between $80,000 and $85,000. If these figures are accurate, it would place the 7X $6,000 to $10,000 higher than that of a comparable Tesla Model Y. MORE: Aussies 'shafted' in cops' AI move 2025 Zeekr 7X electric car. Australia's best-selling EVs in the first half of 2025

Tesla may have experienced a sales slump in recent months, but it's still Australia's number one electric vehicle (EV) brand by a huge margin. According to data supplied by the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI) and the Electric Vehicle Council (EVC), Tesla delivered 14,156 EVs in the first half of 2025, placing it well ahead of second-placed BYD at 8556. BYD is outselling Tesla overall too, notching up 23,355 deliveries year-to-date including its plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs). Below is a Flourish chart showing all brands that sell EVs in Australia, and how many they each delivered in the first half of 2025. Hundreds of new car deals are available through CarExpert right now. Get the experts on your side and score a great deal. Browse now. A total of 624,130 new vehicles were delivered in Australia during the first six months of 2025, with a total of 47,245 of these being EVs – or 7.6 per cent overall. In contrast, during the first half of 2024, Australians took delivery of 633,098 new vehicles, with a total of 50,905 of these being EVs – an 8.0 per cent share. Notably, there are still some brands that don't report their delivery figures to either the FCAI or the EVC. These include Cadillac, Smart, and Xpeng, though holdout Deepal – which commenced customer deliveries last December – started reporting its figures in May 2025. The Tesla Model Y remains Australia's best-selling EV by a country mile, and the arrival of a heavily updated model has helped boost sales in recent months. Supplied Credit: CarExpert While the second-placed BYD Sealion 7 is quite a bit behind, deliveries of the rival mid-size electric SUV only commenced in February and have ramped up, reaching a shocking 1795 in June – just over half the established Tesla brand's tally. Another Tesla – the US brand's only other model in Australia, the Model 3 sedan – sat in third place despite a significant sales decline. The MG 4 hatch and Kia EV5 mid-size SUV also remained in the top five overall. Below is a flourish chart showing every EV sold in Australia during the first half of 2025, excluding models like the Cadillac Lyriq, Xpeng G6, and the Smart lineup, for which sales data isn't available. We've also used VFACTS data to calculate how much of a nameplate's sales were attributable to EVs, where other powertrain types are available.
