Woxsen University Partners with IBM for Industry Calibrated Academic Programs

HYDERABAD, India, June 9, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — Woxsen University has entered into a strategic MoU with IBM India Private Limited, an academic-industry collaboration poised to reshape the way business and technology education converge.
The five-year alliance spans the School of Business and School of Technology, with direct impact on the MBA (Business Analytics) and BBA (Data Science & Artificial Intelligence) programs. It introduces a unified learning framework where students across disciplines engage with enterprise-level tools and frameworks aligned with global business standards.
'Our partnership with IBM is not an add-on. It is a structural shift in how we envision higher education. By embedding enterprise-grade tools and certifications into the DNA of our curriculum, we are placing Woxsen students on the same technological footing as professionals in Fortune 500 companies. This alliance breaks down the traditional silos between business and technology education, enabling a business analyst to speak the language of AI and a data scientist to understand market strategy. This collaboration ensures our graduates are ready from day one and are equipped to lead with technological fluency, strategic sharpness and global agility.' — Dr. Raul Villamarin Rodriguez, Vice President, Woxsen University.
Through this collaboration, students gain structured access to IBM's suite of technologies, including artificial intelligence, blockchain, and advanced analytics platforms. Each participant receives globally acknowledged IBM certifications, embedded directly into academic delivery.
IBM's subject matter experts will engage closely with Woxsen's faculty to co-deliver training grounded in current industry practices and use cases. The pedagogical approach emphasizes applied learning, ensuring students build competencies that hold relevance from the outset of their careers.
The partnership further facilitates an integrated innovation environment. Students from business analytics, data science, and artificial intelligence work in interdisciplinary cohorts, reflecting the collaborative dynamics of modern enterprises. This environment enables learners to build strategic insight alongside technical acumen, equipping them to contribute meaningfully to technology led initiatives.
With curriculum co-developed alongside IBM and aligned with industry frameworks, graduates transition into the workforce with minimal adjustment. The alliance also strengthens career trajectories through IBM's extensive professional network, creating pathways for internships and early placements.
This initiative reflects the alignment of Woxsen's international recognition with rankings from QS, Bloomberg, and IIRF and IBM's longstanding presence at the intersection of business and technology. The partnership brings together two institutions committed to cultivating leaders who understand both commercial imperatives and technological evolution.
The MoU introduces a dynamic structure for continuous academic enrichment, responsive to technological change and market demand. In an increasingly complex global business environment, this collaboration signals Woxsen's intent to prepare its students not only to participate in the digital economy, but to shape it.

AI Not A Threat But A Teaching Aid In PR, Say Academics

KUALA LUMPUR, July 7 (Bernama) -- Artificial Intelligence (AI) should be embraced as a supportive tool in public relations (PR) education, but clear guidelines and a structured curriculum are essential to ensure ethical and responsible usage among students. Head of the Strategic Communication Centre at the Faculty of Communication and Media Studies, Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Dr Wan Norbani Wan Noordin said that while AI is definitely a friend in the learning environment, the extent of its integration must be carefully managed through proper education and policy alignment. "We can't stop students from using AI, but I think you can help them to use it at the proper avenue. Yes, it is definitely a friend, but how much of a friend are we talking?" she said while speaking as a panelist during the session titled AI & PR: Friend or Foe? held in conjunction with the Kuala Lumpur International PR Conference (KLIP 7), themed "Curiosity, Creativity, Clarity", here today. Other panelists were Associate Prof Dr Nurul'ain Mohd Hasan, a lecturer at the Faculty of Modern Languages and Communication, Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM); Boy Kelana Soebroto from Indonesia; Jennifer Muir from Australia; Fiona Cassidy from New Zealand; Ruby Wan from Hong Kong; Nguyen Khoa My from Vietnam; and Mohamed Ali from Singapore. Wan Norbani said many students are excited to use AI for idea generation and initial research, but she expressed concern over their limited ability to verify sources despite being in higher education. She added that although Gen Z and Alpha students are digital native, they still need ethical guidance and practical tools, noting the absence of a standardised AI or AI-and-PR subject, and stressing the need to formally introduce AI into public relations education. Wan Norbani said digital literacy and ethical values are embedded in most PR subjects and noted that students themselves suggested users should be transparent by declaring AI use, highlighting the need for structured education to ensure responsible and mature application. Meanwhile, Nurul'ain shared that her classroom study showed an 11 per cent improvement in students' understanding of PR concepts after using AI tools, noting that AI does not replace educators but serves as a colleague, research partner, and teaching aid. "We need to expose students to ethical and responsible use of AI. It's not about full dependence, but thoughtful application," she said, adding that AI should be seen as a valuable tool in PR education, not a threat.

Smarter machines coming to Penang factories

Global tech giant IBM and Malaysia Semiconductor Industry Association introduced agentic AI at a recent showcase event in Penang. Unlike older automation systems, agentic AI does not just follow strict coding. It can detect patterns, set its own goals and adjust its actions in real-time, making it ideal for complex manufacturing environments where speed and accuracy matter. This means that local factories could soon rely on machines to predict breakdowns before they happen, inspect products for defects on the spot or manage the flow of materials through supply chains, all without human input. The technology is being pitched as a major productivity booster, especially for Penang's export-driven industries. 'Agentic AI isn't just another upgrade,' said IBM Malaysia country manager Dickson Woo. 'In manufacturing, it's a game-changer helping companies make faster, smarter decisions and automate entire processes. 'This leads to smarter factories, fewer delays, better quality and a stronger global edge for Malaysian-made goods,' he said. The event drew business leaders, tech providers and policymakers looking to future-proof Penang's industrial backbone and keep pace with a fast- moving global market where intelligent automation is now essential.

Navigation firm TomTom to cut 300 jobs as it pivots to AI amid falling sales and unpredictable outlook

THE HAGUE, June 30 — Dutch car navigation firm TomTom said today that it was slashing 300 jobs, roughly 10 percent of its workforce, as it seeks to stem financial losses and 'embraces artificial intelligence'. The Amsterdam-based company was an early pioneer of digital navigation in cars, but has been struggling as people no longer use a separate device to move around. TomTom announced in a statement that it was 'realigning its organisation... as it embraces artificial intelligence', resulting in 'organisational changes'. These changes would affect 'certain roles in the units working on our application layer, and in our sales and support functions, resulting in a reduction of 300 roles,' the firm said. The company employs around 3,600 people worldwide. TomTom forecasts a drop in sales from 574 million euros (RM2.8 billion) in 2024 to 505-565 million this year. Chief executive Harold Goddijn told investors in April that trade tensions resulting from US President Donald Trump's tariffs made the short-term outlook for the firm 'less predictable'. However, he said that he remained 'confident in our long-term trajectory'. — AFP
