Smarter machines coming to Penang factories
BIG changes are coming to Penang's manufacturing sector involving artificial intelligence (AI) that can spot problems, make decisions and take action without waiting for human instructions.
Global tech giant IBM and Malaysia Semiconductor Industry Association introduced agentic AI at a recent showcase event in Penang.
Unlike older automation systems, agentic AI does not just follow strict coding.
It can detect patterns, set its own goals and adjust its actions in real-time, making it ideal for complex manufacturing environments where speed and accuracy matter.
This means that local factories could soon rely on machines to predict breakdowns before they happen, inspect products for defects on the spot or manage the flow of materials through supply chains, all without human input.
The technology is being pitched as a major productivity booster, especially for Penang's export-driven industries.
'Agentic AI isn't just another upgrade,' said IBM Malaysia country manager Dickson Woo.
'In manufacturing, it's a game-changer helping companies make faster, smarter decisions and automate entire processes.
'This leads to smarter factories, fewer delays, better quality and a stronger global edge for Malaysian-made goods,' he said.
The event drew business leaders, tech providers and policymakers looking to future-proof Penang's industrial backbone and keep pace with a fast- moving global market where intelligent automation is now essential.

The showcase envisions Oecusse as a controlled, scalable testbed that can demonstrate tangible benefits ahead of a full nationwide roll-out. This pilot concept aligns with Timor Leste's strategy to build confidence in new technologies through live demonstrations, stakeholder engagement and phased adoption across government ministries and institutions. If adopted, Timor Leste stands to become one of the first ASEAN nations to implement a nationwide digital identity framework powered by biometrics and secure data infrastructure – one which positions the country as a regional trailblazer in digital public service innovation. Angkasa approves RM255m for nine high-impact cooperative projects
KUALA LUMPUR: The 39th ANGKASA delegates' general meeting (MAPA) today approved an allocation of RM255 million to implement nine high-impact business projects set to benefit both the cooperative community and the general public. Angkatan Koperasi Kebangsaan Malaysia Berhad (ANGKASA) president Datuk Seri Dr Abdul Fattah Abdullah said the projects include the establishment of a cooperative-owned digital bank, food security initiatives, the development of affordable housing and the production of dairy products. 'Our goal is for cooperatives not only to remain relevant but to become major players in critical economic sectors such as food security, digital financial services and affordable housing. 'This RM255 million allocation aims to unlock greater potential and positioning cooperatives to be more competitive and sustainable,' he told reporters after the meeting, held at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur today. The meeting also saw elections for ANGKASA's top two leadership posts - president and deputy president. Abdul Fattah retained his position after securing majority support from delegates, while Associate Prof Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Abdul Razak Shaik was elected as deputy president for the 2025-2028 term. The annual meeting brought together 4,898 cooperative delegates from across the country to deliberate on key resolutions, the strategic direction of the national cooperative movement, and action plans to strengthen the standing of Malaysian cooperatives at both domestic and international levels. - Bernama

PM to deliver keynote address at BRICS Business Forum
RIO DE JANEIRO: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim will deliver the keynote address at the BRICS Business Forum, held in conjunction with the 17th BRICS Leaders' Summit, today at 9am (8pm Malaysian time). Anwar, who has just arrived in Rio de Janeiro, will be joined by Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who also serves as president of the Brazilian National Confederation of Industry, in delivering the keynote. Malaysia is participating in the summit as a BRICS partner country and as the incoming chair of Asean for 2025. The country officially became a BRICS partner on Jan 1 this year. During his visit to Rio de Janeiro, Anwar, who is also finance minister, is scheduled to hold a business meeting with Brazilian multinational aerospace company Embraer. The Prime Minister is accompanied by Transport Minister Anthony Loke; Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz; Energy Transition and Water Transformation Deputy Minister, Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir; and senior government and corporate officials. Bilateral trade between Malaysia and Brazil is projected to rise by 14.6 per cent to RM20.35 billion in 2024, up from RM17.43 billion in 2023, maintaining Brazil's position as one of Malaysia's top trading partners in Latin America.
