Walmart Canada says it has dropped prices on hundreds of items. This retail analyst says to do your homework
Bruce Winder said consumers should do their research and compare the deals with other items, because the retailer may be creating the perception of having the lowest price everywhere.
'When you lower a basket of items, it … is used to try to convince the consumer that everything else in the store is cheap or competitive, and it's not always the case,' Winder said in a video interview with CTVNews.ca in Toronto on Monday.
Winder says the trade dispute and buy Canadian movement may be factors behind Walmart Canada's move.
'There's a lot of companies in Canada who are trying to sharpen their pencil from a price perspective, because they realize Canadians are hurting,' Winder said. 'Walmart might be hurting a little more than normal because of the pro-Canadian movement. I think a lot of Canadians have invested their shopping dollars in Canadian companies.'
Canadians 'more financially stretched'
The company announced Monday that since February, it has dropped the price on hundreds of major staple items to help consumers save money. The products include 'some fresh fruits and vegetables, bathroom tissue, water, cheese, ground beef and shampoo.' Walmart Canada said it will also keep a 'consistent stock' of these items.
'At a time when Canadians are feeling more financially stretched than ever, we've lowered the price of hundreds of key items across our stores and website,' Venessa Yates, president and CEO of Walmart Canada, said in a press release. 'We want Canadians to know we're working hard to help them save, especially at a time when many are struggling to make ends meet.'
The company said more than 8,000 new rollbacks, which lower prices further, have been offered since early June in apparel, electronics, health and wellness and other items.
Customers will see thousands of 'rollback' offers in-store and on Walmart.ca each week, added Sam Wankowski, the retail giant's chief merchandising officer.
CTVNews.ca reached out to Walmart Canada for comments as to how much prices will be lower for some products. This story will be updated with the company's response.

'There's a fear of coming to America': B.C. to Washington state travel down five months in a row
Five months into the U.S.-Canada trade war and B.C. drivers are still travelling into Washington state far less often than they used to. Southbound crossings at the four main points of entry near Metro Vancouver were down 42.6 per cent in June compared with the same period last year, according to data collected by the B.C. Transportation Ministry and Washington state's Department of Transportation. It's the fifth straight month in which southbound crossings were down. 'We definitely are worried on how this difference in mindset has shifted tourism,' said Don Enos, vice-president of the Blaine Chamber of Commerce. Start your day with a roundup of B.C.-focused news and opinion. By signing up you consent to receive the above newsletter from Postmedia Network Inc. A welcome email is on its way. He said he wasn't aware of local businesses laying off staff, but said they were 'definitely worried.' 'They're scaling based on traffic, so we haven't had any major hiring,' Enos said. 'Restaurants definitely could use more business. Gas stations … have had the heaviest hit.' Just over 118,000 B.C. cars entered Washington state at Metro Vancouver crossings in June — down from 206,000 over the same period last year. In the first half of this year there have been 413,000 fewer B.C. drivers crossing into Washington state compared with the same period last year. Enos said local businesses have been shifting resources to focus on and re-engage with local customers. 'We've opened our messaging into: 'Be neighbourly and support your neighbours' from a Blaine standpoint,' he said. Canada is the largest source of international visitors to the U.S., according to the U.S. Travel Association, which warned in February that a 10 per cent reduction in Canadian travel to the States could mean US$2.1 billion in lost spending and 14,000 job losses. U.S. President Donald Trump first announced tariffs on Canadian and Mexican goods in February and then-Prime Minister Justin Trudeau urged Canadians to spend domestically in response. 'Now is the time to choose Canada … It might mean changing your summer vacation plans to stay here in Canada and explore the many national and provincial parks, historical sites and tourist destinations our great country has to offer,' Trudeau said at the time. In early March, Premier David Eby doubled down, urging British Columbians to avoid travel to the U.S. 'If you have a choice about where to travel, avoid travelling to the United States,' he said. Border crossings from B.C. fell 50 per cent the following month. Canadian and U.S. officials are working toward a new trade agreement with hopes of a July 21 deadline but Enos thought worries about crossing the border were more likely to be turning away Canadian tourists than talk of tariffs and trade wars. 'There's a fear of coming to America,' he said. 'I think that's the bigger hurdle that we have to come over right now.' He pointed to the local waterpark , which just reopened after extensive renovations. It was intended to be a significant draw for B.C. tourists, something Enos said people were skeptical about now. 'It's a bummer, because it's beautiful. They've done a great job with the renovations,' he said. ngriffiths@

Gold Finder Announces Next Phase of Target Development at West Madsen Gold Project, Red Lake, Ontario
West Madsen adjoins Madsen Mine property, owned by West Red Lake Gold Mines (WRLG), which recently announced the restart of the Madsen Gold Mine Vancouver, British Columbia--(Newsfile Corp. - July 3, 2025) - Gold Finder Resources Ltd. (TSXV: GLD) (OTCQB: GLDFF) ("Gold Finder" or the "Company") is pleased to announce summer fieldwork at its 100%-owned West Madsen Property (the "Property"). A review of the Company's previous exploration programs on the Property (2019-2024) was conducted to determine untested targets and areas that require further fieldwork prior to carrying out any additional mechanical stripping or drilling. To view an enhanced version of this graphic, please visit: Two areas were selected for the 2025 fieldwork (see Figure 1) and the work was carried out by Emerald Geological Services. More than 200 soil samples and 25 rock-grab samples were collected during the June program and submitted for laboratory analysis, with results pending. Area 1 Covers an area from Tack Lake, where the Balmer-Confederation contact has been identified in drilling, to the western property boundary with Athena Gold's Laird Lake property, where Athena reported bonanza-grade grab samples up to 373 g/t Au (see Athena's Dec. 4, 2024 news release). Prospecting and soil sampling was carried out to identify further gold anomalies proximal to the Balmer-Confederation contact. Reports from the Ontario Assessment File Database indicate grab samples up to 2.23 g/t Au approximately 500 meters west of the West Madsen property boundary and drill intersections up to 8.4 g/t Au over 1.3 meters approximately 1.5 km west of the boundary, as well as grab samples up to 178 ppb Au near the west shore of Tack Lake on the Property. Area 2 Covers an area near the eastern boundary of the Property, where 2020 soil sampling yielded anomalies up to 106 ppb Au from "A" horizon, and where 2024 drillholes WM-24-03 and WM-24-04 intersected ultramafic flows believed to belong to the Balmer Assemblage, which hosts the current and past producing gold mines of the Red Lake camp. Infill soil sampling and prospecting was carried out in this area during the 2025 program. "It's an opportune time to continue our systematic exploration of the West Madsen property with the official restart of the Madsen Gold Mine and our eastern claim boundary only 5 kilometres from the Madsen mine/mill complex," said Greg Lytle, President of Gold Finder. About the West Madsen Gold Project The West Madsen Gold Project covers 5,988 hectares in the heart of the Red Lake Gold Camp. It is comprised of two contiguous claim blocks: Block A to the east and Block B to the west, both accessible by secondary roads connecting to Ontario HWY 618 then to the town of Red Lake 15 km to the northeast. Block A adjoins the Madsen mine property, owned by West Red Lake Gold Mines, which recently announced the restart of the Madsen gold mine (see WRLG news release of May 22, 2025). The bulk of the mineral resources on the Madsen mine property are hosted in a ~7-km-long gold trend that follows the major crustal break or contact between the Balmer and Confederation assemblages. Gold Finder has observed the same Balmer-Confederation contact in outcrop approximately 1.5 km west of the Block A eastern claim boundary and identified it within an ~8-km corridor of disrupted regional magnetics that traverses Block A from the Madsen mine property.
