Aussie dog walker shares the chilling moment his Beagle Benji discovered a human skull in Port Lincoln bushland

Daily Mail2 days ago
A dog walker has described the 'surreal' moment his Beagle Benji stumbled across what police believe to be the severed head of an alleged murder victim.
The grisly discovery was made in scrubland near Port Lincoln in South Australia on Thursday and comes six weeks after Julian Story's suspected murder.
His partner, former Beauty and the Geek contestant Tamika Chesser, has been charged with his murder but is yet to be formally interviewed by police.
Tyson McCallum said his routine dog walk took a dramatic turn when Benji ran into bushland and wouldn't come back when called.
'I just went in a bit closer and kind of made the connection pretty quickly as to what I thought it was,' McCallum told 9News.
'(It was) pretty surreal to be honest,' he added. 'I was kind of like, "No way, it's not what I think it is, surely not". But it was too coincidental.'
Police believe the remains are Mr Story's, though forensic testing is underway to formally confirm the identity.
'They've obviously been through a lot, can't even imagine it,' McCallum said.
'To have it I guess finalised, they can get some closure which will hopefully bring them some peace.'
As for Benji, McCallum said the sharp-nosed pup would be rewarded.
'He will definitely get a few extra treats,' he said.
Chesser has been charged with murder and with interfering with human remains to pervert the course of justice.
Authorities on Friday expanded their search of the area, with police and State Emergency Service crews (SES) combing the reserve. Cadaver dogs were also deployed in the hunt for further remains.
Forensic teams have collected several items from the scene, which have been sent to Adelaide for examination.
Chesser appeared in Port Lincoln Magistrates Court with a shaved head via video link on Thursday in relation to three separate matters.
The former cocktail waitress was thrust into the spotlight at the age of 19 when she appeared on series two of the Seven Network show in 2010.

Woman arrested after travelling with two-year-old in suitcase in New Zealand

A New Zealand woman was arrested on Sunday after travelling on a bus with a two-year-old girl trapped in her luggage. DI Simon Harrison said the 27-year-old woman had been charged with ill treatment and neglect of a child. Police were called to a bus depot in Kaiwaka, 60 miles (100km) north of Auckland, after the bus driver became concerned about a bag moving during a scheduled stop. 'When the driver opened the suitcase, they discovered the two-year-old girl,' Harrison said. 'The little girl was reported to be very hot, but otherwise appeared physically unharmed.' The luggage had been stored beneath the bus passengers, in a separate compartment. Harrison said the girl was in hospital undergoing an extensive medical assessment. He added that the driver prevented 'what could have been a far worse outcome'. Further charges were possible, Harrison said. New Zealand's Ministry for Children, Oranga Tamariki, has been notified.

Hunt for Britain's most-wanted fugitive after 2005 murder of mother

Detectives are hunting Britain's most-wanted fugitive 20 years on from the murder of a mother at her home. Kevin Parle is wanted after Lucy Hargreaves, 22, was shot dead at her home in Walton, Liverpool on Aug 3 2005. Ms Hargreaves was killed while she was asleep on the sofa after three men burst into her home, which they then set on fire. Her partner and two-year-old daughter were upstairs and had to escape through a window. Police arrested 21 people as part of their investigations, but no one has been convicted. Parle, who was believed to be living abroad, was also wanted in connection with the murder of Liam Kelly, 16, who was shot in the early hours of June 19 2004 in Dingle, Liverpool. A comprehensive review into Ms Hargreaves' murder was started by Merseyside Police two years ago and remains active. Detectives are also continuing to appeal for anyone with information about a gold Lexus car, believed to have been dumped shortly after the shooting on Richard Kelly Drive, Clubmoor, by a number of men who then ran in the direction of Normandale Road. 'She wasn't involved in criminality' Howard Rubbery, head of the serious case review unit, said: 'The family remain absolutely devastated by Lucy's death. 'It's important to note Lucy is an absolutely innocent victim. She's not from a family of criminality. She wasn't involved in criminality. 'The hunt for Kevin Parle is very much on, and we ask anybody with information, anybody who is close to Parle and knows where he is, to please come forward. 'There were three males responsible for this offence and we are looking for justice for Lucy's family in relation to all three. 'I do believe that there are people out there who have yet to speak to the police, even though it's 20 years on, who hold information that's absolutely vital to our investigation.' Two decades on, Ms Hargreaves' family released a previously unshared photograph of the mother-of-three, taken at college. They said: 'Over the past 20 years, people will have talked with family and friends. A number of people were contacted by males using a phone that was stolen, along with a vehicle used in Lucy's murder. 'The people who received those calls, along with others, could have information which could be crucial in achieving justice for Lucy, her parents, sister, children and all her extended family and friends. 'We appeal directly to them to please come forward. Now is the time.' Her family, who said they 'miss her every single day', welcomed a focus on tackling violence against women and girls in recent years. They praised the families of other victims of gun crime, including Cheryl Korbel and Julie Dale, the mothers of nine-year-old Olivia Pratt-Korbel and Ashley Dale, 28, who were shot in their homes in separate incidents in Liverpool in August 2022. The family said: 'We greatly admire the determination and guts of the families of those who have more recently been killed as a result of gun crime here in Merseyside. 'The mums of both Ashley Dale and Olivia Pratt-Korbel have led a real and powerful community challenge to men of violence.' The family added: 'We consider ourselves to be an ordinary local family with strong roots in the Walton, Norris Green, Croxteth and Dovecot areas of Liverpool. 'Lucy's nanny Joyce was a strong mother of eight who had to cope with the loss of three granddaughters in her lifetime - including Lucy. 'Her nanny Betty, left a widow aged 35 with six children to bring up, was awarded the British Empire Medal for her services to nursing as an auxiliary nurse in the Royal Liverpool Hospital. 'They were two strong local women typical of their generation, and Lucy too was a strong woman who could have achieved so much had she only been given the opportunity.'
