6 People Injured After ‘Unpermitted Fireworks' Exploded on a Boat
Authorities said the boat was 'modified into a fireworks platform' and 'malfunctioned' during a fireworks celebration
Witnesses at Lake Martin said the boat had been launching fireworks for several minutes before the explosionA Fourth of July fireworks explosion in Alabama has resulted in the hospitalization of six people.
The incident involved 'unpermitted fireworks' and occurred at about 9:14 p.m. local time on a part of Lake Martin in Tallapoosa County, according to a press release from the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA).
Authorities stated that the incident involved the malfunction of a pontoon boat 'that had been modified into a fireworks platform' for a planned fireworks celebration.
Those injured included William C. Davis, 39, and Aaron L. Kovak, 49 — both of whom were transported to the University of Alabama Birmingham Hospital — as well as Johnathan R. Wilmarth, 43, Joshua A. Husted, 36, and Matthew Davila, 28, all of whom were transported to local hospitals for treatment, per the release.
The condition of those injured is not yet known. There will be an investigation into the incident led by the Alabama Fire Marshal's Office, per ALEA.
ALEA informed PEOPLE that they have no additional information to share at this time. PEOPLE additionally reached out to the Alabama Fire Marshal's Office for comment on Saturday, July 5, but did not receive an immediate response.

The fireworks display was an annual event, according to local news outlet The Outlook. The outlet reported that witnesses at the event said that the boat had been launching fireworks for several minutes when one exploded low and near the vessel, at which point the boat appeared to catch fire.
At least three medical helicopters were utilized to transport victims to local hospitals, per The Outlook and ABC 33-40.
In addition to details regarding the incident, ALEA shared multiple fireworks safety tips in their statement to the public, including 'never launch fireworks from boats unless specifically permitted and equipped with proper safety measures,' and 'secure your fireworks setup to prevent tipping or misfires due to wind or movement.'

Massive Car Explosion In Virginia Parking Lot Blamed On Faulty Fuel Tank
As far too many people who try to light a bonfire with it learn the hard way, gasoline likes to explode. Inside an engine, that's usually a good thing, but in order to make the tiny explosions happen inside the engine, you're forced to carry around a giant tank of it outside the engine. As long as everything goes right, that isn't usually a problem, but when something goes wrong? Well, your car might blow up Hollywood-style, just like what happened with one car in a Washington, D.C.-area parking lot Thursday morning. The good news is, according to the Arlington County Fire Department, no one died in the explosion. In fact, there weren't even any injuries. Had someone been walking nearby at the time of the explosion, it may have been a different story, but luckily, the exploding car only took out three other nearby vehicles and not any people. Of course, that sucks for the owners of all four cars, since they're now burned to a crisp, likely along with everything inside, but ultimately, they're just things, and things can be replaced. People, on the other hand, are much more difficult to replace, at least until we figure out better cloning technology. They're reportedly still investigating what caused it, but for now, they believe it was caused by a faulty fuel tank that had ruptured, leading to a Boiling Liquid Expanding Vapor Explosion or BLEVE. Basically, because of science, when a pressurized container full of a flammable liquid such as gasoline is heated, the pressure can get high enough that the tank ruptures, causing a leak. The sudden change in pressure causes the liquid to boil almost instantaneously, creating a rapidly expanding cloud of a now highly flammable gas. And if something sets off that highly flammable gas, you get a really big boom. Typically, BLEVEs are associated with propane tanks, but in this case, the fire department claims it happened with the exploding car's fuel tank. Throw in a couple other gas tanks in nearby cars, and you have a recipe for disaster. As long as your car's gas tank hasn't been damaged, you probably don't have much to worry about, but as you can see in the video above, it is technically possible for a parked car to just explode, seemingly randomly. Jury awards $1.17 million after woman was injured in Phenix City Piggly Wiggly
A jury in Russell County, Alabama, awarded $1.17 million to the estate of a woman whose lawyers say was thrown to the ground during a March 2018 robbery of a Phenix City Piggly Wiggly, according to court documents provided by Morgan & Morgan. The jury made their decision in the lawsuit Wednesday. The lawsuit was filed against J.T.M. Corporation, owner and/or operator of Piggly Wiggly Store #425, which is located at 1130 Highway 280 bypass in Phenix City. An initial complaint filed on Battle's behalf by Walker Garrett, who is a Columbus councilor and an attorney for Morgan & Morgan, alleges Battle was in the checkout line of the Piggly Wiggly on March 3, 2018, when the store manager confronted someone attempting to rob the store. The lawsuit alleged the person attempting the robbery grabbed Battle and threw her to the ground. The lawsuit says Battle, who was alive at the time the suit was filed but has since died, suffered 'severe injuries.' She was permanently harmed and suffered 'mental anguish' due to the incident. 'While we did not claim that her death was related, Ms. Battle's health was in much better shape before the incident and she suffered from a steady decline in health following the incident,' Garrett said in a statement. 'She was 85 at the time of the incident, and passed away 4 years later in 2022.' The store did not have private security or hired police officers attending to security at the store on March 3, 2018, the lawsuit says. The complaint alleges this robbery wasn't the first time a robbery or attempted crime had occurred at the store. The complaint says the defendants 'knew, or had reason to know, of a probability of conduct by a third person that would endanger Muriel Battle and other patrons.' 'We're pleased the jury saw how this injury severely diminished the quality of our client's life in her final years and recognized the defendant's role in causing her injuries,' said Morgan & Morgan attorney Erby Fischer in a statement.
