'My sister wants to name her son after a fish and I can't believe she's serious'
Casting judgement on baby names is typically taboo - yet some choices are so outlandish they are just asking for comments. The world of baby naming is wide open, with parents free to select anything from traditional to the truly unconventional. Opting for an extraordinary name might draw raised eyebrows and comments though.
One mum-to-be left her sister utterly astonished with her choice of a baby name, so unusual that it was initially taken as a joke. A Reddit user recounted how her sister, a lifelong marine enthusiast, had long harboured dreams of a sea-inspired name for her future child.
While there's no shortage of unique maritime-themed names like Ocean, Marina, Coral, and Finn, this particular mum-to-be has decided to name her boy after a fish. To be precise, the sea bass.
The woman's sister revealed: "She said she settled on the name 'Seabass', yes, the fish. I am not making this up, I truly wish I was. She's always been a playful person so I truly thought she was joking but she said she really loved it."
Seven months into her pregnancy, the mother in question has already bought a personalised sign and a monogrammed blanket emblazoned with 'Seabass', demonstrating her commitment to the distinctive name.
"I told her that I really don't think this is a good choice, tried to give her other nature or ocean names, and even asked if she could use the name Sebastian," the soon-to-be aunt said.
"But she wasn't having it and said 'This name feels right for him'. I know he's not my child, and so I'm trying to respect her choice."
The post has left commenters utterly gobsmacked by the mother's selection for her son's name. Some suggested Seabass could be a charming pet name for a lad called Sebastian, but balked at the idea of it being his real name.
One individual said: "Oh, good grief. We know a little guy called Sebastian who gets called Seabass by his family, but it's not like it's his actual name!".
Another confessed: "I actually can't think of a way to respond to this in a nice way... I am genuinely flabbergasted."
However, the original poster came back with some good news, saying: "FINAL UPDATE: She went with Sebastian!! Thank God! I was so so worried. But his nickname is Seabass haha!"

Mother-in-law slammed by bride as she wears IDENTICAL wedding gown & wails hysterically at her son's choice of wife
GETTING married is supposed to be the happiest day of your life. But one woman's wedding day has left a bitter taste in her mouth, and it's all thanks to her mother-in-law. 2 The bride recently took to social media to explain how her mother-in-law tried to ruin the day and put a stop to it. In the image the bride shared, she stood next to her husband wearing a gorgeous lace gown, holding a bouquet of blue and white flowers. Her husband held her around the waist as they posed for the snaps but one detail left viewers horrified. Standing just behind the groom was his own mum who wore a white wedding dress in an identical lace pattern as the bride. As she tried to squeeze her way into the pictures of the married couple, she clung to her son's arm. The scenes shocked many but the bride said this was only the start of it. Taking to the Reddit forum, Wedding Shaming, she said her mother-in-law cried the entire night before the wedding. She wrote: "My MIL cried the day we got married. "She cried LOUDLY the night before our destination wedding about how disappointed she was that her son chose me "out of all his options". "Then proceeded to not sign the guest book or gift us anything, even a card." 2 I'm 5ft3 & a size 12-14 - my 7 Tesco dresses are an absolute bargain & perfect for a last-minute wedding guest outfit People were shocked by the bride's story and many asked how the relationship was going now. She said the wedding happened five years ago and her mother-in-law has been on her 'best behaviour' after being told off by her son. "This was 5 years ago! It's actually going well. He put his foot in her a** after the wedding and she's been nothing but cordial ever since," she explained. Still, people were shocked by her choice to wear a wedding dress to her son's big day. One person wrote: "Well, if it's any consolation, you looked amazing in that dress!" Another commented: "'Didn't sign the guest book or send a gift' But she still showed up to make sure her triflin a** was in all the pictures in white no less." "The way she is holding his arm it looks like she wants to be the bride," penned a third. Meanwhile a fourth said: "Boy mums are so weird." "Straight to jail. She belongs to the streets,' claimed a fifth Someone else added: "I hope that was the last day you and your husband spoke with her."

'I want to ban vaping from my wedding – it's tacky and ruins pictures'
A woman desperately didn't want people to smoke vapes at her wedding because she doesn't fancy them in the professional photographs, because vaping gives her 'the ick' A woman sparked controversy after admitting she wanted vapes completely banned from her wedding, because they give her "the ick". She explained her wedding is at the end of August, and they're having a ceremony and outdoor reception with a "festival vibe". But this is why she began panicking about the fact that everyone would be vaping. "The photos of the day are really important to me, and I've spent a small fortune on our photographer. He's a casual photographer, so he will be mingling through groups of friends to take natural shots rather than staging anything," she explained on Reddit. But she shared because the event is outside, she was "worried about how many people will be vaping". She said many people who will be there do vape. "I really can't stand people holding a vape in photos, it gives me the ick," she seethed. The bride-to-be explained on Reddit's 'Wedding Planning' forum: "I'm really worried it's going to ruin the aesthetic and cheapen the photos of the wedding, I don't want to look back at these pictures in years to come and see people puffing on vapes or with vapes in their hand." She continued: "I want to send an email out through our wedding website asking guests to either hide their vapes in photos or even better to not bring them at all! "Has anyone else banned vaping from their wedding before, or do I sound like Monica from Friends?" In the comments, someone urged her to write the following on an invite: "Smoking and vaping will only be permitted in a designated spot per venue regulations." They did warn, however, for her to "be prepared to have a big chunk of the guests in that designated spot for much of the wedding". Someone penned: "Vaping is very second nature to a lot of people who do it. They don't even really notice they're doing it. So I would still be prepared to see people doing it. But a smoking area will be helpful for people to be more mindful." A Redditor said if there is a designated smoking area, people will use it, but one man wrote: "Tell that to my aunt, who was smoking a cigarette at her seat during my brother's outdoor wedding. She also showed up late." "A very much your aunt and unique problem," somebody responded. A woman replied: "Not super unique. Some people will smoke anywhere and don't care at all if it's prohibited in that spot. I experience it every time I go to an outdoor concert at the big outdoor venue near me. It's banned, people do it anyway and it's never enforced." However, another suggested they could go about it a different way, by mentioning vapes to the photographer, saying: "You unfortunately can't really have it both ways - if your photography is doing natural/unstaged shots then they're gonna capture people as they are which means with vapes in hands. "You can control your photographer much more than your guests so maybe just tell the photographer to try to avoid getting vapes in shots."
