Loving Giving Local: Belle Valley Fire Department

Yahoo01-05-2025
For more than 85 years, the Belle Valley Volunteer Fire Department has been serving part of Millcreek Township. It is this week's recipient of $250 from JET24/FOX66 Loving Giving Local and Auto Express.
Fire Chief Jeremy Moreland said the department will use the funding for the daily bills.
'Gas, electric, all that good stuff. Any rig maintenance it could be used for,' he said.
Orange fire trucks are a signature of the Belle Valley Fire Department. The volunteers and equipment of Belle Valley supplement the newly created paid Millcreek fire department.
Belle Valley covers a diverse region of Erie County that includes everything from residential and industrial buildings to high rises and farms.
Chief Moreland is a homeowner and a parent and has been a volunteer for 16 years. Here's why.
'When the calls come out and nobody shows up what are you going to do? So, I always wanted to help any way I can. This was the best thing I could do, and I love doing it,' he said.
Some Belle Valley equipment is brand new. Some of it is aging, just like some of the volunteers, the chief said.
'I have two volunteers here that have been volunteering for 50 plus years. So, the number of volunteers are age age-oriented, where they're older than younger, so we need more younger volunteers. It's a very good thing for the community to do,' he explained.
Like so many other volunteer fire departments, Belle Valley can use more volunteers. If that's something that interests you, here's what you need to know.
'Go to any of the volunteer fire departments and put in an application. They'll send you for a physical and background check. And once you pass all that, you'll start taking classes. Nothing comes out of your pocket other than your time. It's a lot of time invested in this, but it's an awesome thing to be a part of,' Chief Moreland suggested.
Following his donation, Joe Askins of Auto Express said, 'Volunteer fire departments are needed in our community and for us to be able to deliver Loving Giving Local to Belle Valley who has been in our community for over 85 years, we know there's a big expense to run fire department and we know any donation we bring to a local volunteer fire department always stays in the community and come to great use.'
Every week, JET 24/FOX66 and Auto Express present $250 to a local non-profit organization, selected at random. Watch Good Morning Erie on JET 24 or Good Day Erie on FOX 66 Wednesday morning to see who the next lucky winner will be.

Could Smart Build Another Miata Rival? This Time, It's Electric

When Smart introduced the ForTwo before the world panicked over the Y2K bug, the company realized that it had a platform for a fun sports car. A few years later, the Smart Roadster was born, based on the Fortwo platform but stretched to accommodate the sleek styling. It was meant to revive the love for open-top sports cars in the Old Continent, before bowing out in 2005 after over 43,000 units rolled off its French factory. A Smart Roadster revival would be nice, and apparently, it's entirely possible given that the brand is already preparing a successor to the ForTwo. There's one big catch, though – the Roadster will be entirely different, thanks to Smart's EV-only strategy. In an interview with Auto Express, Smart UK CEO Jason Allbutt was asked if there's a possibility of a new Smart Roadster given the Fortwo's upcoming turn. Albutt recognized the "particularly good fun" that the convertible brought to the table before, and the UK's love of coupes and top-downs. "For a country that has more rain than probably any other European market, we are lovers of coupés and roadsters. So yes, I could see a possibility for such a car in the UK," said Albutt. However, Albutt emphasized that a Roadster revival isn't being planned yet, with the company currently focusing on the Smart #5 SUV and the Smart #6 hatchback. Both vehicles are electric, which follows the brand's strategy. That said, if – and that's a huge IF – Smart proceeds with the revival of the Roadster, it will likely be battery-powered. It also needs to be lightweight and compact to match the original's driving dynamics, while also incorporating the instantaneous pull that EVs are known for. With an electric Mazda MX-5 potentially sitting alongside an ICE-powered Miata – a car like the Smart Roadster would be a worthy rival. However, Albutt also expressed his reservations about an electric roadster. Apart from the sensory open-air feeling, he cited that buyers of roadsters typically open their tops to hear the sound of the engine. Of course, this isn't possible with an electric powertrain, though speed won't be a problem given where electric powertrains are these days. "Maybe there's a new audience that would be looking at [an electric roadster] in a different way. I'm not quite sure yet as to who the buyers of that car really are. It's too early to tell right now, but we'll see." Copyright 2025 The Arena Group, Inc. All Rights Reserved.

Evidence That Mazda's Next MX-5 Miata Will Switch To Electric

This is the ICONIC SP concept on display during the Japan Mobility Show in 2023. It is highly ... More expected that this concept will influence the next MX-5. (Photo by Jun Sato/WireImage) The rumors flying around concerning which way the next-generation Mazda MX-5 Miata's powertrain will go appear to have reached a climax. And according to Britain's Auto Express magazine, the answer seems to be — fully electric, or at least an EV powertrain will be optional as will an all-new ICE unit. The current model 'ND' version of the MX-5 has been on the market for more than ten years now and has practically become the antithesis of increasingly heavy electric sports cars like the MG Cyberster, Lotus Evija and Maserati GranTurismo Folgore. Hovering at around 2200 lbs since its inception way back in 1989, the tiny Mazda has stayed true to its original philosophy — lightweight sports. Auto Express reports that it has uncovered patents, filed in the U.S. of the MX-5 Miata with electric power. These patents reveal batteries located in the transmissions tunnel in a coupe that can only be interpreted as the next-gen MX-5. The construction in the patent images goes against the typical pure EV 'skateboard' architecture which could make it difficult to reproduce the low-to-the-ground driving position we see in all previous roadsters. Battery placement in the transmission tunnel is not new, with the most recent Lamborghini Revuelto's employing a 3.8kWh pack in its tunnel. While Mazda's new setup is pure electric, the Lamborghini uses its battery to complement a plug-in hybrid system. The current Mazda MX-5 RF Sport. (Photo by National Motor Museum/Heritage Images via Getty Images) The MX-5's conventional size, form, and weight distribution have been maintained by using this somewhat creative approach to battery integration. In addition to the transmission tunnel, Mazda has incorporated batteries behind both seats, similar to the layout in the upcoming Porsche Cayman EV. Although it isn't stated in the patents, the necessity of a "transmission tunnel" in the first place clearly implies that the technology is built on a shared architecture between an internal combustion engined car with a conventional gearbox and a pure-EV. Mazda realizes that going full electric with its flagship sports car is too extreme and financially risky, so it's hedging its bets and will offer an EV and an ICE version. According to Mazda's application, "the yaw moment of inertia can be further reduced because the battery is installed in the tunnel portion, allowing the vehicle's center of gravity to be near the middle of the vehicle.' Mazda's well-known "Jinba-ittai" (horse and rider as one) philosophy has made the MX-5 seem more agile since its inception. The "yaw of inertia" that Mazda is referring to here is basically the vehicle's directional change, so decreasing this helps make a car handle better. While the British magazine mentions that Mazda has not leaked any information on the potential battery size yet, we can be reasonably sure that it will get a unit larger than the 35.5kWh battery in the MX-30 SUV, which was prematurely canceled after its poor 100-mile range forced its exit from the U.S. lineup. Given that the MX-5 has always been rear-wheel-drive, and given that the patent image shows a single electric motor behind the seats, we can expect the new 'NE' model to carry on the rear-drive tradition. What will the new MX-5 look like? The company revealed the drop-dead good-looking, rotary-powered Iconic SP concept at the 2023 Tokyo Motor Show (now called the less impactful 'Japan Mobility Show'!) which the magazine suggests will influence the next MX-5's styling. However, the patent application, which is merely named "electric automobile," does not confirm that the MX-5 would be electric-only. Earlier this year, Mazda unveiled its "multi-solution strategy" to provide customers with multiple powertrain sources, including battery electric vehicles, hybrids, and internal combustion engines. As a result, we expect Mazda's new internal-combustion Skyactiv-Z engine to power the "NE" model, which will replace the current "ND" generation MX-5 later this decade. According to the company, the new powertrain will meet Euro 7 emissions regulations and serve as the foundation of Mazda's lineup "for small products in the electrification era.' So expect the next MX-5 to offer two very different MX-5 Miata models by 2027, one delivering electric-only power and the other fitted with a conventional gasoline engine.

Flawed hybrid car efficiency data to stifle UK EV sales and propagate pollution

Despite this, the government has stated that emissions targets for manufacturers will continue to use the old figures and test cycle. This, T&E fears, means that drivers will continue to be 'misled by the 'low emission' image of PHEVs portrayed by carmakers' and that the UK may struggle to hit its lofty climate targets as a result. In fact, the European transport sustainability group believes this mixed messaging surrounding PHEVs could see as many as 500,000 additional new cars using the tech hitting the road by 2030, in turn jeopardising the sales of cleaner, fully-electric cars. T&E has called on the government to bear in mind the new updated plug-in hybrid emissions figures and regulations before pressing ahead with its ZEV mandate changes to avoid 'duping' the public. Such a sentiment is backed by Professor of Business and Sustainability at the University of Cardiff, Peter Wells, who told Auto Express that T&E's analysis was 'entirely correct, both in terms of the real-world performance of PHEVs, and the actual cost to consumers. It is a flawed policy.' Wells continued, saying: 'We too easily forget that the point of all of this is to slow down the rate of climate change. Once again the government has allowed itself to be distracted by short-term economic expediency.' Auto Express has approached the UK Department for Transport for comment, but we have yet to receive a response. Take a look at the best electric car deals on the market right now… READ SOURCE
