Students gain experience at world's largest youth football tournament
Students have shown their skills on an international stage. A group of 47 students from Solent University in Southampton travelled to Sweden to support the world's largest youth football tournament, the Gothia Cup. The group was made up of 36 sport and exercise therapy students and 11 student coaches from football studies, sport and exercise science, and sports coaching courses. Dr Lynsey Northeast, course lead for sports and exercise therapy at Solent University, said: "We're now in our fourth year of providing this opportunity to our students, and it is always a great experience for our students who get to apply their skills in a real-world, fast-paced environment. "Not only did they rise to the occasion with professionalism and confidence, but they also gained invaluable experience that will benefit them throughout their careers." Held annually in Gothenburg, the Gothia Cup attracts more than 1,900 teams from 74 countries, providing a high-pressure setting for hands-on learning. READ MORE: National scholarship leader recognised by Southampton university Throughout the week-long event, students delivered pitch-side and clinical support to UK teams, managing real-time injuries and challenges while also putting their coaching into practice. Ana Carolina Monteiro, one of the students who took part, said: "The Gothia Cup definitely took me out of my comfort zone, which is what you want at this stage in our professional path. "It has helped me grow in confidence, as well as improving my networking, resilience, and much more. "After this week I feel like I am capable of doing great things if I put fear to the side, and just put myself out there, which is something we've been told to do since the first day at uni." Beyond their clinical duties, students explored Swedish culture and built connections with athletes and professionals from around the world. The experience is part of Solent University's focus on experiential learning, helping students bridge the gap between theory and practice on a global scale. Solent's sports and exercise therapy course is accredited by The Society of Sports Therapists (SST) and includes industry placements with top UK sports teams, offering students practical experience before graduation.

New Kangaroos coach Kevin Walters said he only wants to take players to England who want to represent the green and gold as Tino Fa'asuamaleaui admits he hasn't come to a decision over a potential switch. Walters knew one of his first roles as the national coach was to address reports trio Hamiso Tabui-Fidow, Payne Haas and Fa'asuamaleaui are all thinking of playing for Samoa at the end of the season. The trio have all played for Australia at some point, but are considering playing for Samoa moving forward. While this has opened up a debate around State of Origin eligibility, the trio are yet to make any official call with the NRL season still going. Although Fa'asuamaleaui has broken his silence around the situation and claimed he will make his decision after the season's end. But it appears Walters will have time to meet with the Queensland forward who hasn't made up his mind. "For now I haven't made a decision. I'm hoping I'm in the boat where I have to make a decision," Fa'asuamaleaui said. "Obviously being in rehab probably rules that out at the moment. I just want to get my knee right, play good football and hopefully I get to that point at the end of the year where I get to select." Fa'asuamaleaui said he has been tossing up the decision after a visit back to Samoa to see his family. "I am massively connected to my Samoan culture. Me and Iszac were fortunate enough to go back at the end of last year after 10 years," he said. "To be back there with my family and see all the kids I grew up with who now have kids like me, it brought a real connection to my culture. I have always loved being Samoan and I am still on that journey of learning my culture more and understanding it." Fa'asuamaleaui played six games for Australia across 2022 and 2023, but has been injured in recent years having struggled to back-up for the green and gold at the end of the season. And while Fa'asuamaleaui is unsure of who he will play for, Walters claimed he isn't going to ask any of them to remain in the green and gold if they don't want to represent the jersey. 'I have had some conversations and picked up the phone,' Walters said on Monday. 'There will be some meetings in the next couple of weeks with those guys. I won't be trying to convince them to play for the Kangaroos. "I will sit down with these guys and outline my plan on where we are going to take the jersey and then get an understanding of their feelings towards that and how they feel about playing for the Kangaroos. If they want to continue and play for our jersey that is great I love that and if they don't I totally respect that.' Tabuai-Fidow played for Samoa in the 2022 World Cup, but was hampered with injury and only featured in one game. He has represented Australia six times since then having won the Pacific Championship last year in a stacked side. Haas has represented Australia four times. The Kangaroos will play a three-match Ashes series for the first time since 2003, with the first Test against England getting underway at London's Wembley Stadium on October 25. Walters will select a 22-man squad to tour England after the NRL season.

'Love links golf': Kyriacou eyes another Aussie major
Steph Kyriacou is feeling right at home as she looks to join the party and capture a third straight golf major for Australia at the Women's British Open in Wales. Kyriacou is feeling a little envious after watching fellow Sydney 24-year-old and great mate Grace Kim win this month's Evian Championship in France. Kyriacou led last year's Evian event into the final round before finishing runner-up and posting a third top-10 from her first 14 major starts. The ambitious two-time European Tour winner is yet to break through on the LPGA Tour and knows she is playing catch-up against her compatriots, including world No.5 Minjee Lee, who bagged her third career major at last month's PGA Championship. Kyriacou says she's always feeding off the bumper Australian contingent now plying their trade in America, including eight in this week's Open field at Royal Porthcawl. "There's a whole bunch of us out here now, so it's nice to have some other Aussies," she said ahead of Thursday's first round of the $US9.5 million event. "I don't know what 'Greeny' (Hannah Green) and Minjee were like if it was just them two or not, but yeah, it's nice to have a couple Aussie mates and to hear the accent. It is very refreshing. "It's kind of pretty competitive against all of us, I would say. Gracie's got one up on me, or two up on me, so I need to get a little wriggle along, don't I?" After making the cut on her major championship debut at the 2020 Open, Kyriacou also boasts a tie for 13th and equal seventh in the event. The links specialist is relishing another opportunity to contend at the last major of the year between Cardiff and Swansea. "I love links golf," Kyriacou said. "I love playing in the wind. I grew up at St Mick's (St Michael's Golf Club), which is on the water, so I've grown up trying to be creative. "I feel like that's when I play my best golf. You can't be too technical when there's wind because it's just not really going to get you anywhere. "You have to be a bit more creative, do a bit more to your swing. "So technique goes out the window, which definitely helps me. "Anything could still happen out here, but I'm feeling good going into the week." Hira Naveed successfully qualified on Monday with a two-under-par 69 at Pyle and Kenfig Golf Club to join fellow West Australians Lee and Green in the field. Kyriacou, Kim, Gabriela Ruffels, Karis Davidson and Cassie Porter round out the Australian challenge. Defending champion and world No.3 Lydia Ko will spearhead a three-strong New Zealand charge also featuring former NSW Open winner Momoka Kobori and Amelia Garvey. English sensation Lottie Woad is the bookmakers' favourite ahead of world No.1 Nelly Korda after winning last week's Scottish Open on her professional debut.
