In which country are all egg-laying chickens cage-free?
Animal welfare has become a global concern, and efforts in this aspect provide powerful reminders of how consumers, NGOs, and corporations can work together to bring about meaningful change. While many countries are dependent on legal mandates to regulate farming conditions, a country recently did something exceptional voluntarily. Without a government-imposed ban, it has fully eliminated the use of cages in egg production and set all birds free. Sweden has now become the first country in the world where no egg‑laying hens are kept in cages, and it achieved this milestone without any legal ban, according to animal welfare group Project 1882. The campaign began in early 200s In 1988, the Swedish Parliament initially voted to ban cage systems, but the promise was not followed through, and 'enriched' cages continued to be used, formally allowed under amended legislation. When Project 1882 began its campaign in the early 2000s, cages still confined about 40% of laying hens in Sweden. Since then, more than 85 companies, from retailers to foodservice chains, have committed to phasing out cage eggs from their supply lines. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like No annual fees for life UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo According to Project 1882 by 2024, cage-based systems had dropped to under 1%, saving over 90,000 hens in a single year, and by 2025, all cages were confirmed empty, freeing over 17 million hens from confinement since 2008. Particularly notable is that Sweden made this change through corporate and consumer action, not legislation. Project 1882's CEO, Benny Andersson, said to the Human Progress that 'this milestone is a victory that comes on the heels of grassroots activism and public pressure from consumers, not government legislation'. Sweden created a broad-based movement to phase out cages across the poultry sector. Sweden has also imposed strict number for chickens Compared to European Union rules, Sweden also enforces stricter stocking density limits. While EU legislation permits up to approximately. 46 hens per 10 ft², Swedish standards cap density at about 39 hens per 10 ft². Additionally, Sweden's Animal Welfare Act mandates that farm animals be provided care 'appropriate to their physiological and ethological needs'—further strengthening protections. However, animal welfare advocates caution that without binding legislation, the progress could be reversed. Project 1882 is now calling for a legal ban on cage‑housing to prevent future backsliding and to set a model for the rest of Europe. Sweden's story offers a powerful example that sustained consumer pressure and corporate responsibility can deliver systemic reform. As other European nations move toward phasing out cages, Sweden presents a compelling template for voluntary transformation.

Take The First Step Towards Rapprochement
Friendship Day Just a few days ago, i finally decided to send a hand-written card to a friend of mine with whom i fell apart years ago on a trivial issue. I was thinking of reconciliation with him for quite some time, but it was too late. As fate would have it, i got his sister's mail that my friend passed away a couple of years ago. Alas, i took so long to forgive him and couldn't do it when he was alive. Our 'noble' gestures lose their significance when they occur long after an unpleasant incident has taken place. "Though man is vindictive, he's forgiving too. He wants to forgive but waits for an opportune moment. And here he makes a mistake. That moment may come, but the person he wants to forgive may not be there anymore, leaving no option but to repent." William Wordsworth's didactic letter to his sister Dorothy serves as a reminder to people like me who want to forgive or say something to someone but wait for the appropriate moment. Human life is too short to harbour any grudge against anyone. The moment we feel that we've made a mistake or hurt someone, we must ask for forgiveness , because no one has seen tomorrow. This life, which seems so fair, is like a bubble blown up in the air. Like all transient things, even an ill feeling is evanescent. If friendship , or for that matter, any relationship, doesn't last forever, so does enmity. Why do we hesitate to ask for someone's forgiveness? This is an act that must be executed the moment it strikes one, and wholeheartedly at that. Jesus forgave those who crucified him. One of the persons torturing the Arab mystic Mansoor al-Hallaj whispered into his ear and said that he never wanted to be a part of such a ghastly act but was helpless. He asked, "Will you and Allah forgive me?" "My friend, you've already been forgiven," said the mystic and died. Man is always in a dilemma. The essential and inherent goodness in him gets snowed under by a host of conflicting emotions. Mirza Ghalib said, "Hai aadmi bajai khud ek mahshar-e-khyal/Hum anjuman samajhte hain, khilwat hi kyon na ho," - this creature we know as man is one big chaos of desires and thoughts. Even when lonely, he is never alone. For, in his breast, lies hidden a tumultuous crowd. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Senior Living Homes in Tizi Ouzou May Surprise You Senior Living | Search Ads Undo Clinical psychologists have found an uncanny behavioural attachment between two individuals. They've concluded that the moment one wants to forgive someone, the other person also thinks alike. This is CG Jung's Universal Synchronicity or Pervasive Telepathy. So, go ahead and do it without further delay, shelving your ego and vanity. A rose given during life is better than orchids on the grave. Never forget that the bitterest tears shed over graves are for words left unsaid and deeds left undone. Isn't forgiving in time the most sublime act? Rather than spend life's fleeting moments in recurrent and recrudescent rancour and recrimination against someone, we all must strive to take the first step towards rapprochement. We must stoop to conquer and bury the hatchet. Urdu poet-lyricist Qateel Shifai aptly said, "Humne hi apni ana' mein unki parwah na ki/Woh toh baahein phailaye khade the humare intazaar mein" - my ego didn't let me reach out to him/He was more than willing to embrace me. Do it before it's too late. Authored by: Sumit Paul International Day of Friendship is on July 30 Why Arjun Was Chosen: The Untold Secret of Bhagavad Gita Chapter 4, Verse 3

Trapped for 3 hours: 8 Lucknow restaurant workers stuck in lift; rescued by ART team using hydraulic spreader
LUCKNOW: What began as a routine return home turned into a harrowing ordeal for eight young restaurant workers who were trapped inside a malfunctioning lift for nearly three hours in the early hours of Wednesday. The incident occurred around 2:53am in a commercial building near Munshi Pulia, Indira Nagar, which houses a jewellery store on Ring Road. The elevator, which halted abruptly on the ground floor, failed to open, leaving the group stuck in a confined, poorly ventilated space. Despite desperate attempts to force the doors open and calls for help, there was no immediate response, leading to growing panic among the trapped youths. Fortunately, one of the workers managed to place a distress call to emergency services. Fire station officer Shatrughan Kumar from Indira Nagar Fire Station was the first to respond, swiftly deploying a rescue team to the site. Chief fire officer Ankush Mittal confirmed that a fire tender and an Advanced Rescue Tender (ART) were rushed to the location. 'Using a hydraulic spreader, our team forced open the lift doors and safely rescued all eight individuals. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You To Read in 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo Thankfully, there were no injuries,' Mittal said. The rescued workers were identified as Aman (21), Arun (21), Shivam (20), Ishant (17), Vipin (19), Akash (19), and Saurabh (21). All of them are employees at a restaurant owned by Rajat Dwivedi, a resident of Rajajipuram. Following the rescue, fire officials initiated a preliminary inspection of the elevator and flagged serious concerns regarding the building's lift maintenance and safety protocols. A detailed report has been sought, and authorities have assured that strict action will be taken if lapses or negligence are found. The incident has raised alarm about the enforcement of building safety standards in commercial spaces, especially those with high footfall and late working hours, said locals. In a similar case on July 15, two sanitary workers—Apurv Verma of Sadar and Ojaswi of Saadatganj—were rescued after being trapped for over two hours in a malfunctioning lift at Prem Plaza, behind Jawahar Bhawan in Hazratganj. Fire Station Officer Ram Kumar Rawat and his team responded around 5am and safely evacuated the duo without injuries. The cause of the malfunction is yet to be determined, and a lift inspection has been initiated.
