Kilikiti Bats Bring Ara Campuses Together For Samoa Language Week

Samoan kilikiti pate (cricket bats) specially hand crafted and decorated by students will be at the centre of Gagana Samoa (Samoa Language Week) celebrations at Ara Institute of Canterbury.
In a first for Ara, a tournament will take place bringing together teams from across the institute to play the Pacific nation's favourite sport.
The event is the vision of Ara's Te Whatu Ora funded Pacific lead in Mental Health and Wellbeing, Greg Galovale, who wanted to involve trades students in a community project with a fitness focus.
'I was seeking to promote joinery in the Pacific space but also health, wellbeing and community,' Golavale said. 'Our Level 3 Pre-Trade joinery tutors Tim and Jody saw the prototype and got right behind the idea. The end result is fantastic!' he said.
Kilikiti bats were also made, decorated and gifted to key community groups who participated in Moana Health workshops to launch Gagana Samoa on campus. The event followed the 2025 theme 'Ia malu lou sā. Folau i lagimā – a well-grounded self is a successful self.'
The Wednesday kilikiti tournament will see teams from Ara's Woolston, City and Manawa (nursing) campuses line up alongside a team made up of the joinery students who crafted the bats.
Joinery student Theresa Desouza said it had been a rewarding project and she was looking forward to the event.
'I've lived in a lot of different countries, so I grew up very multiculturally. This opportunity to engage in another culture and build community has been beautiful,' Desouza said.
Student Advisor Pacific (Fautua ma So'oupu) Rev. Fitifiti Luatua visited the Woolston campus to share insights and first-hand experience of the game with the class.
Fergus Gaughan said he'd enjoyed learning about the history of kilkiti and the stories behind the bat design.
'This project has also brought me back to why I started getting interested in woodworking. I enjoy working with raw timbers and shaping them. Being able to take something unrecognisable and turning it into art resonates with me,' he said.
Joinery tutor Tim Melker said incorporating the project into coursework had been straightforward as the skills involved in making the three-sided bat were similar to aspects of furniture making.
'Our learners started with a square block. We used a jig and other machinery to cut off the bulk and then hand tools to fine tune it,' he said. 'But the standout aspect has been the cultural awareness we've gained through learning about the sport, having Rev share insights into the design of the bats and his experiences of playing in Samoa.'
Tutor Jody Pehrson added the class had created a legacy item through the project and the energy in the workshop told its own story.
'The proof is in the engagement. Everyone has been focused on creating a bat worthy of the sport and now they want to go and play the game. We've all learned a lot,' he said.
Once the bats left the hands of the trades learners, they were decorated and embellished by a team led by third-year Bachelor of Design (Applied Visual Art) student Lydia Iosefo.
'I do a lot of stencil work in my study, so this drew on that with some traditional patterning,' Iosefo said. 'As a bonus, this will count towards my professional practice hours which tests our ability to work with clients and deliver projects on deadline.'
Golavale said he was pleased the project had resonated with all those involved and he was looking forward to the inaugural kilikiti tournament – rain or shine.
'If the weather doesn't play ball we'll head to the Whareora. We'll be ready for some fun and expect plenty of banter,' he said.

Photo: Supplied A new medical school at the University of Waikato must deliver for Māori, says a Waikato-based Iwi Māori Partnership Board. The government announced on Monday it had approved $82.85 million in government funding toward the school, with the university chipping in more than $150m. The school would open in 2028, with an initial roll of 120 students. Te Tiratū Iwi Māori Partnership Board (IMPB) represents 114,000 whānau Māori in the wider Waikato region. The 15 IMPBs were established in 2022 initially to support the Māori Health Authority and to advocate for whānau and communities in their regions. When the authority was disestablished they picked up some of its responsibility . Te Tiratū co-chair Tipa Mahuta said the investment in the medical school marks a significant opportunity to address long-standing health inequities and workforce shortages in the region - especially for rural, Māori and underserved communities. "Whānau across Waikato have told us time and again: they want to see more Māori health professionals-people who understand our values, our lived experiences, and our ways of being as Māori. "Cultural safety is not a nice-to-have. It is essential to clinical excellence, trust, and good health outcomes. If patients don't feel safe, they disengage-and that can cost lives." Photo: Supplied Te Tiratū urged the government, Te Whatu Ora Health New Zealand, Hauora Māori Directorate and the University of Waikato to work closely with iwi, hapū and community partners to shape a graduate school that delivers on its promise - not only to grow the GP workforce of clinical placements across the country, but to heal a system given Māori die on average at least seven years before non-Māori. "We cannot miss this moment. A third medical school must reflect a third way-a culturally grounded, equity-driven, future-facing model of training that serves all New Zealanders, starting with those most underserved," co-chair Hagen Tautari said. Te Tiratū was ready to partner and contribute to the new 'Division of Health' health precinct opening on the University of Waikato Te Whare Wānanga o Waikato campus, he said. Napier ice swimmer battles intense afterdrop after 1.6km glacial swim

Photo / Debbie Rodger Ice swimming involves plunging into water 5C or colder, with individual swimmers covering various distances. Each athlete is monitored by lifeguards and medical staff from a nearby IRB. Jones' physique reflects strength and the insulating layer essential for ice swimming. He had completed a 1km swim two days earlier and was ready for the ice mile challenge. Before entering the water, he followed his usual ritual, saying a karakia and responding to a friend's powerful call to action in te reo Māori: 'Tāiki E!' Blue Lake's icy waters took his breath away. He fought to control his breathing, and his muscles contracted as the cold intensified. Just like during his previous swim, he felt the sensation of moving through jelly rather than water. Turning his head away from the petrol fumes of the IRB, Jones pulled steadily through the clear glacial lake. 'The water is green, and you can see your hands. The rock formations look cool,' says Jones, referring to the lake's history as a site of hydraulic gold mining in the late 19th century. He completed the swim with ease and emerged at the lake's edge with surging endorphins and tingly skin. He let out a Samoan 'Cheehoo' in memory of his friend Willie (Boost) Leota, who died last year. Despite years of wild swimming and months of ice water exposure, nothing prepared him for what came next. 'Once my handler had me, I thought, far out, I am so cold,' says Jones. Chilled to the core, his body temperature continued to drop. As well as his clothes, a heated vest was added, but moments later, he stumbled while in the medical tent. Experienced ice swimmers like Jones understand afterdrop and have strategies to manage it. When needed, onsite medical staff trained in post-swim care respond expertly, as they did with Jones. Still, lying in the foetal position on a heated bed, he shivered uncontrollably and felt nauseous. 'This is a serious afterdrop I am going through now,' he thought. 'I have never experienced it like this. Just that extra 600m in my second swim was enough to tip me over.' Now, wrapped in layers of clothing, duvets, hot water bottles, medical heat blankets, and classic New Zealand woollen blankets, Jones still felt no warmth. 'I knew I had all these warm things on me, but I felt ice cold. I couldn't feel any heat coming into my body. It was a bit scary.' His partner Debbie Rodger stayed close, at one point wrapping his upper body into a hug. After seeing others go through the same process, she wasn't frightened. 'I knew he was in good hands,' she said. It took 30 minutes for Jones to warm up. Heat first returned to his chest and stomach, then spread to his extremities. Soon after, he was helping pack down event infrastructure. 'I knew I was in good hands and just had to roll through it,' he says. Now that the event is over, Jones and Rodger say they're most humbled by the people they met, especially ice swimmers with disabilities who take to the polar waters. For Jones, more cold water calls. In 2027, he wants to swim at the International Ice Swimming Association World Championships at Megève in the French Alps.

Health New Zealand Te Whatu Ora's removal of both clauses involving Māori from their offer in collective bargaining shows not only disrespect but a spurning of their legal obligations, NZNO Kaiwhakahaere Kerri Nuku says. New Zealand Nurses Organisation Tōpūtanga Tapuhi Kaitiaki o Aotearoa (NZNO) has been involved in protracted talks with Te Whatu Ora for months. The new offer from Te Whatu Ora to NZNO members on 30 June failed to include Tikanga Allowance and Kaupapa Māori dispute resolution process clauses. "These clauses were included in the previous offer in May but have been removed without explanation in the latest offer," Kerri Nuku says. "With massive Māori health needs and a huge shortage of Māori nurses this move devalues them and would further motivate them to move on to overseas countries like Australia. With cultural obligations to their community, the big picture is that this would further perpetuate gaps in health care, including Māori continue to die at a faster rate." Te Whatu Ora has an obligation to Māori, starting from Te Tiriti o Waitangi and the Pae Ora (Healthy Futures) Act 2022, she says. These obligations require Te Whatu Ora to actively protect Māori interests, ensure equitable health outcomes, and support Māori self-determination in health matters. "But moves such as these seem to be strategic in the systemic eradication of Māori rights by the coalition Government." Kerri Nuku says two weeks before the offer from Te Whatu Ora, the Health Minister promised changes to the Healthy Futures Act 'would also strengthen the Hauora Māori Advisory Committee (HMAC)'. "I strongly doubt this is what the HMAC would advise. It seems that they're either speaking with forked tongues, or one hand does not know what the other is up to. "We call on the Minister to encourage Te Whatu Ora to reinstate the clauses back into the offer."
