Shane van Gisbergen dominates on another road course, wins at Sonoma to extend streak
The New Zealander once again showed he's in a completely different class on road and street courses than his rivals as he led 97 of 110 laps Sunday to win from pole at Sonoma Raceway. All three of his wins this year have been from pole — which tied him with Jeff Gordon for a NASCAR record of three consecutive road course victories from the top starting spot.
Gordon did it between the 1998 and 1999 seasons.
Victory number four for van Gisbergen — who stunned NASCAR in 2023 when he popped into the debut Chicago street course race from Australian V8 Supercars and won — seemed a given before teams even arrived at the picturesque course in California wine country. His rivals have lamented that 'SVG' has a unique braking technique he mastered Down Under that none of them — all oval specialists — can ever learn.
That win in Chicago two years ago led van Gisbergen to move to the United States for a career change driving stock cars for Trackhouse Racing. He and Ross Chastain have pumped energy into the team over this summer stretch with Chastain kicking it off with a Memorial Day weekend victory at the Coca-Cola 600.
Van Gisbergen is the fastest driver to win four Cup Series races — in his 34th start — since Parnelli Jones in 1969. He's also the winningest driver born outside the United States.
'It means everything. That's why I race cars. I had an amazing time in Australia, and then to come here and the last couple weeks, or years, actually, has been a dream come true,' said van Gisbergen. 'I've really enjoyed my time in NASCAR. Thanks, everyone, for making me feel so welcome. I hope I'm here for a long time to come.'
The Sonoma win made it four victories for Trackhouse in eight weeks. Van Gisbergen was second from pole in Saturday's Xfinity Series race.
Although he dominated again Sunday, van Gisbergen pitted from the lead with 27 laps remaining and then had to drive his way back to the front. He got it with a pass of Michael McDowell with 19 laps remaining, but two late cautions made van Gisbergen win restarts to close out the victory in his Chevrolet.
Chase Briscoe was second in a Toyota for Joe Gibbs Racing.
'I never played basketball against Michael Jordan in his prime, but I feel like that's probably what it was like,' said Briscoe after not being able to pass van Gisbergen on the two late restarts — the last with five laps remaining.
'That guy is unbelievable on road courses. He's just so good. He's really raised the bar on this entire series.'
Briscoe was followed by Chase Elliott in a Chevrolet for Hendrick Motorsports. McDowell in a Chevy for Spire Motorsports was fourth and Christopher Bell in a Toyota for Joe Gibbs Racing was fifth.
In-Season challenge
The mid-season tournament that pays $1 million to the winner is down to four drivers.
Alex Bowman finished 25th and eliminated Ty Dillon, who finished 26th. Tyler Reddick (11th) knocked out Ryan Preece (16th), John Hunter Nemechek knocked out teammate Erik Jones as they finished 21st and 22nd, and Ty Gibbs, with a seventh-place finish, eliminated Zane Smith.
Bowman, at eighth, is the highest-seeded driver still in the challenge, which debuted this year.
Crew fight
NASCAR officials had to separate the crews for Brad Keselowski and Ty Gibbs when members from the two teams scrapped on pit road during the race.
Keselowski's crew confronted Gibbs' crew after Gibbs drove through their pit stall and narrowly missed hitting some of Keselowski's crew members already in place waiting for him.
The confrontation appeared to be contained to pushing and shoving and NASCAR quickly stepped between them. Both crews were given an official warning for fighting but NASCAR said Gibbs did nothing wrong.
Clean race — for awhile
It took 61 of the 110 laps for the first caution for an on-track incident — when Ryan Blaney was knocked off the course and into the dirt early in the third stage. The contact from Chris Buescher left Blaney stranded, and right before NASCAR could throw the yellow, Bubba Wallace and Denny Hamlin both spun.
The race ended with six cautions — two in the final stretch.
Up next
The Cup Series races Sunday at Dover Motor Speedway in Delaware, where Denny Hamlin won last year.

'I Don't Have Any Air Coming Out:' Mechanic Works on Chevrolet. He Can't Believe What He Discovers When He Turns on the Car
A mechanic was shocked by how easy it was to correct one Chevrolet driver's gripes with the car's air conditioning system. The TikTok account @laandgauto documented just how easy it was to address this problem. As simple as the process was, the car tech was gobsmacked by the driver's inability to address the issue themselves. Their video on the AC quandary begins with a recording of the car's interior. 'Customer states, 'I don't have any air. Don't have any air coming out,'' he says as he reaches for the fan speed knob inside the Chevy. He twists it to the right, toggling on its max air distribution. 'So, you know, initially, it's a Chevy, I think OK.' Next, he begins hovering his hand over the vents and the bottom floor of the passenger's seat. 'There's the actuator, I mean, under here.' After he places his hand above the car's dash to see if any air is being emitted from these ventilation points, he confirms a lack of airflow throughout the ride. Check the Knobs 'I got nothing coming out. It's all being forced to the front,' he says, indicating that only the defroster is dispensing air. Then, he realizes what is wrong with the car, and thankfully, it's a simple fix. But calling it a fix seems like hyperbole. Because, as it turns out, the Chevy owner had all of their vents turned off. The small knobs beneath the vents themselves had been turned to the off position, preventing air from coming out. After switching them to the open position, the flowing air can be heard distributing evenly throughout the car's cabin. 'So, I started looking around and then I noticed every single one of these is closed,' the TikToker says. Stunned, he concludes that he cannot make up the kinds of ridiculous problems he sees. Car Owners: Clueless About Their Rides Numerous studies have pointed to an alarming automotive trend of user ignorance. In 2018, Fox News reported that more than half of American car owners are confounded by basic auto care. A Seattle, Washington, repair shop that cited the same study indicates that a majority of U.S. drivers 'seem to be intimidated by a car mechanic.' Thankfully, there are tons of resources online that can inform drivers about basic, routine maintenance they can perform on their rides. Even if commuters aren't performing the work themselves, having a better understanding of a car's needs can help drivers ensure their rides are getting the TLC they require. Motor1 has compiled a checklist of what to keep an eye on when you purchase a new car . Online services like DriverSide also provide a detailed list of recommended service intervals and procedures after a driver enters their car's details. This information can curb unnecessary service procedures on one's vehicle. And coupled with a local mechanic with a good reputation and ratings, this proactive approach to car care can ensure one's vehicle is running well long after its manufacturer's warranty expires. Of course, buying cars that are known for reliability and affordable maintenance costs helps too. AC Vents The issue in @laandgauto's video is a prime example of a problem with a very simple solution. However, there are similar AC woes that may also be easily fixed when your system isn't blowing out cool air. Before swapping it out entirely or attempting to fill it with more freon, auto repair shop Hogan & Sons recommends checking your car's fuse box. Consult your car's owner's manual to locate the box and the corresponding fuse responsible for cabin ventilation. You might need a pair of needle-nosed pliers to remove the fuse. If it's charred or blackened at any part, this means it's more than likely blown out. Usually, fuses are standardized parts that many different manufacturers share. Thus, purchasing the ones you need at an auto specialty shop or big box retailer is a fairly straightforward and inexpensive process. Hogan & Sons recommends that drivers lamenting their lack of air conditioning may want to try a fuse swap first. Moreover, swapping out one's cabin air filter is another easy process that could improve air flow and quality in one's ride. Oftentimes located inside the glovebox, cabin air filters usually cost less than $20 for most vehicles and take minutes to replace. Hogan & Sons also recommends that car owners 'inspect the wiring that leads to the AC compressor.' If the wiring doesn't appear to be damaged or torn, see if the AC compressor is littered with debris—same for the cabin filter vents. Try removing the debris and testing your air conditioning once it's been removed. Next, and this might seem obvious, but ensure that your car's air conditioning is set to 'on' and isn't just fanning air coming from outside into the vehicle. Moreover, if you don't want any air coming from outside to enter the vehicle on let's say, a hot day, hit the air recirculation button to ensure cold air is kept inside your ride. Analysis-Despite tariffs, it's still America first for Asia's legacy automakers
By Hyunjoo Jin, Maki Shiraki and Heekyong Yang SEOUL/TOKYO (Reuters) -Toyota and Hyundai Motor may have a beef with U.S. protectionism, but they have one thing in common with President Donald Trump: when it comes to global car markets, it's America first for Asia's legacy automakers. Trump's tariffs on imported automobiles have upended the outlook for the global industry, yet the U.S. remains by far the most important market for Japan's Toyota, South Korea's Hyundai and Asian rivals including Honda and Nissan. North America accounts for at least 40% of the revenue at both Toyota and Hyundai, filings show. The market's importance is unlikely to change any time soon, industry insiders and analysts said, especially with China, now the world's biggest auto market, dominated by homegrown electric vehicle makers such as BYD. Those Asian legacy carmakers with more robust margins and a strong hybrid lineup - such as Toyota, Hyundai, Kia Corp and to a lesser extent Honda - are more likely able to weather the U.S. tariffs storm, and potentially take market share from weaker players like Nissan, analysts said. "The environment that we're in now is becoming increasingly harsh and uncertain, starting with U.S. tariffs," Mazda executive officer Noriyuki Takimura told reporters at an event in Tokyo last week. Mazda aims to strike a balance between "defensive" measures like cost-cuts and "offensive" ones like strengthening its product lineup, he said. Two Hyundai insiders and two Japanese auto executives separately told Reuters they had no intention of downsizing their U.S. businesses in response to tariffs, even as they acknowledged the difficulties ahead. All four spoke on condition of anonymity. The U.S. is Toyota's biggest market in terms of vehicles. It sold 2.3 million vehicles there in 2024, including its Lexus brand, accounting for more than a fifth of its global total. As a source of revenue, North America was second only to Japan in the last financial year. Hyundai's North American revenue was the highest in almost a decade last year. Kim Chang-ho, an analyst at Korea Investment & Securities, estimated it generates around 60% of its profits from the U.S., thanks to higher vehicle prices. Mocked in the U.S. in the 1980s for its perceived shoddy quality, Hyundai doubled down there around a decade ago, especially after tensions between Beijing and Seoul and the rise of domestic EV makers saw it start to lose ground in China. "After years of putting in effort, our brand is finally gaining recognition in the United States," one of the Hyundai insiders said. "So we will not take our hands off the U.S." 'GAME OF CHICKEN' The U.S. has seen a surge in demand for hybrids as consumers have become more concerned about the battery range, price and charging hassles of EVs. Fuel-efficient models such as hybrids will be a key driver to gaining market share, said Morningstar analyst Vincent Sun. Toyota, Hyundai and Kia have particularly strong hybrid offerings. So far, most legacy Asian automakers have avoided raising prices in the U.S. and stronger players are likely to continue to hold off doing so, despite lower profitability, analysts said. Instead, the focus will likely be on taking market share from lower-margin rivals like Nissan and Stellantis, analysts said. 'It will shape up like a game of chicken," said Kim Sung-rae, an analyst at Hanwha Investment & Securities. "Those who will hold up well will emerge as winners.' Over time, tariffs could be a catalyst to help drive consolidation in the industry, or at least deepen existing tie-ups. Investors wonder if tariffs could push Nissan to revive merger talks with Honda that fell apart this year. Mazda, which is 5.1% owned by Toyota, and Subaru, which is 21% owned by Toyota, could become more reliant on the bigger company. MORE INVESTMENT? While Hyundai and Kia have three U.S. factories, they still import about two-thirds of the vehicles sold there. Toyota manufactured 1.3 million vehicles in the U.S. last year, equal to 54% of the vehicles it sold there. Japanese automakers have invested more than $66 billion in U.S. manufacturing since the 1980s, building some two dozen plants, according to the JAMA auto lobby group. At a White House event attended by Trump in March, Hyundai announced a $21 billion investment plan, including a new steel factory, and a plan to boost U.S. production capacity to 1.2 million vehicles a year. The tariffs are likely to encourage Japanese and South Korean automakers to invest more into expanding production capacity and localising supply chains to protect their positions, said Justinas Liuima of research firm Euromonitor International. They will also continue to benefit from one aspect of U.S. protectionism: higher tariffs on Chinese EVs, which means they don't face the same Chinese competition in the U.S. that they do in emerging Asian markets, Liuima said. China ships very few cars to the United States, which imposed a 100% tariff on imported Chinese EVs under the previous administration of President Joe Biden. One of the Japanese executives said it wasn't a matter of simply boosting U.S. production, as high costs, especially of labour, would also weigh on profitability. "It is really a game-changer," Julie Boote, analyst at Pelham Smithers Associates in London, said about the potential longer-term tariff impact. Some automakers have held off giving guidance that takes into account tariffs for the full year, meaning investors may be in store for a rude awakening as companies adjust forecasts as they report quarterly earnings, she said. "There's lots of talk that it's already priced in. I don't really think it is."

As If The C8 ZR1X's 1,250 Horsepower Isn't Enough, Chief Corvette Engineer Hints At An Even Wilder Model
We've hardly had a chance to wrap our heads around the absurdity of the 1,250-horsepower, 233 mph-capable Chevrolet Corvette ZR1X after it was unveiled last month, and Corvette's chief engineer Tony Roma is already hinting at the possibility of an even wilder C8. The Corvette ZR1X and its hybrid V8 powertrain may be the quickest, fastest, and most powerful performance car that Chevrolet has ever produced, but the latest hints add the wonderful qualifier of ...for now. In an interview with Top Gear, Roma said, "the ZR1X is not the end of the story, it's just the latest chapter." He goes on to say that the C8 Corvette's mid-engine platform is proving to be very capable, and that the engineering team is on board with pushing the Corvette's limits even further. The ZR1X uses a twin-turbocharged version of the 5.5-liter LT7 V8 found in the already very powerful Corvette Z06 to drive the rear wheels, and a front axle–mounted electric motor sending power to the front wheels. Its electric motor is slightly more powerful than the front axle motor in the Corvette E-Ray, the other high-performance version of the C8. Read more: These Are The Most Annoying Things About Your Cars Ford and its bonkers Mustang GTD usurped the title of fastest American car around the Nürburgring from the 2017 Dodge Viper ACR last year, with a blistering 6:52.072 lap time, and Chevrolet is itching for its chance at that title. Roma said, "Having the crazy lap times and ridiculous acceleration is part of what makes these cars what they are, so I think we are going to continue to make the car faster for those bragging rights, because our customers appreciate that. It's the same with any performance car manufacturer – we push each other with Nürburgring lap times for that reason. We've done some testing, and all I can say is... stay tuned. We want to be the fastest American car - that's an accolade we'd love to have." Whenever new mention is made about a more powerful Corvette, the internet sets ablaze with speculation that it might be the rumored Zora. Zora Arkus-Duntov was known as "The Father Of The Corvette" because he convinced Chevy that a proper performance car and halo car was a necessity for the brand in the sixties, and he championed a mid-engine design. The world has waited for an "ultimate Corvette" named after Zora for many years now, but such a model has yet to exist. Before the ZR1X's name was announced but it was known that a new and more hardcore Corvette was in the works, it was assumed to be the Zora, but those hopes faded once the ZR1X's name was made official. It is possible, though, that this latest rumor could finally be the fabled Corvette Zora, so we certainly will stay tuned and keep our fingers crossed. Want more like this?
