'Cash rule' warning for UK tourists in Spain, France and Portugal amid power outage threats
Brits planning to travel to Spain, Portugal and France this summer have been warned to carry cash following last week's massive power outage on the Iberian peninsula. On Monday, April 28, the countries were hit with a widespread power cut that affected everything from metro lines to air travel.
During the blackout people were unable to use their bank cards and cash machines, meaning they had no funds to pay for essential items. And amid the threat of further outages, European Union holidaymakers have now been warned to ensure they are keeping coins and banknotes on them during future holidays.
Chris Jones, director of PSE Consulting, said: 'The widespread outages across Spain, Portugal and some parts of France earlier this week are a stark reminder of why cash remains essential.
"As digital transactions dominate more aspects of daily life, we risk overlooking the fundamental resilience that physical money offers during periods of disruption, reports Birmingham Live.

'While cash usage continues to decline across Europe, events like this reinforce why maintaining robust access must remain a priority. This includes identifying and supporting critical services – such as supermarkets, petrol stations and pharmacies – to ensure they can continue accepting cash when digital systems are down.
"Countries like Sweden and Norway have already recognised this, encouraging citizens to keep emergency cash and reinforcing cash acceptance in key parts of the economy.
'As we continue to move towards a more digital economy, policymakers and businesses must not lose sight of the need for balance.
"Protecting access to cash isn't just about supporting vulnerable groups — it's about ensuring the whole economy can function when digital systems falter.
"[This week's] outage is a clear reminder: in times of crisis, cash still counts.'
While it had been considered the outage could have been caused by a cyber attack, the possibility was ruled out by officials.
Extreme weather and variations in temperatures have been blamed for the sudden power disruptions, with officials attributing the outages to a "rare atmospheric phenomenon".
Prof Jianzhong Wu, the head of the school of engineering at Cardiff University, told the Guardian blackouts 'can happen anywhere'.
'Despite today's high standards of reliability, low-probability but high-impact blackout events can still happen.
"These networks are not designed to be completely blackout-free because achieving such a level of reliability would require investment far beyond what is economically feasible,' he said.
Charmalee Jayamaha, a senior manager at the UK government-backed Energy Systems Catapult, said: 'No system can be 100% resilient,' so risks 'need to be balanced with our willingness to pay to reduce them'.

Sharon Lane said the moment she stepped on to the Villa Vie Odyssey cruise ship she felt full of joy. She has now signed up to stay on the cruise ship for at least the next 15 years. It will sail around the world again and again with no end port. It will stop off at glamorous spots across the globe and, unlike other cruise ships, the majority of passengers on the Villa Vie Odyssey - the First Perpetual World Cruise - are long-term residents. Sharon had been looking for a life at sea and said when she found the liner she felt relieved. She has signed up to spend at least the lifespan of the vessel - 15 years - onboard. Most passengers sign up to spend the rest of their lives on the ship. She plunged her life savings into buying her cabin last year and, after a delay of several months, set sail on her new life at the end of September 2024 when the Odyssey cruised through her hometown of San Diego, reports the Mirror. Sharon said she was keen to see the world but also the chance to meet interesting people. Villa Vie Residences' CEO Mikael Petterson explained: "We have a very diverse community including a Nobel Peace Prize winner, a White House chief of staff, an astronaut, and many scientists and doctors onboard who share their knowledge and experiences." And if it's something you might fancy doing in your retirement, there are cabins available. But they aren't cheap. The lowest cost accommodation is an 'inside' cabin that is going for $129,000 (£93,000) for 15 years, with an extra $2,000 (£1,495) per person monthly fee for double occupancy, and $3,000 (£2,180) for single occupancy. If those prices stay the same, a single occupancy cruiser would fork out £392,400 in cabin fees alone across 15 years. However, the figure is low in comparison to the World, which is the only other cruise ship currently at sea. Prices for that begin at $2.5 million. Included in the deal are food and soft drinks, alcohol at dinner, Wi-Fi, medical visits, 24/7 room service, weekly housekeeping, and bi-weekly laundry service. The lack of laundry is something Sharon, from California enjoys. She said: 'I don't have to do my laundry anymore. I don't have to do grocery shopping. Other amenities for passengers, according to Villa Vie's website, include a pickleball court, different shows and performances, wellness classes, and social events, from elegant dinners to casual meet-ups. Villa Vie owners can rent their cabin out to others, which means short-term passengers can come and go from the Odyssey. The Odyssey usually stops in each port for a couple of days, where optional shore excursions are organised for an additional fee. The eight-deck Odyssey can accommodate 924 people, but it has been reconfigured and streamlined to a roomier 450. The ship's voyage did not get off to a smooth start, as it became stranded in Belfast for four and a half months last year. The Odyssey arrived in the Northern Ireland capital back in May 2024 to be fitted out before it was scheduled to sail off on the 30th of that month. Due to issues with the rudders and gearbox, the vessel ended up staying put for four and a half months. It finally set sail on October 3.

Brits ignore red alert heatwave warning with huge rush on last-minute breaks

Thousands of Brits have booked holidays in the past 48 hours, with many boarding flights in the next seven days as part of last-minute deals, swapping the uncomfortable British heat for Europe's scorching sun. In arguably classic British fashion, a huge number of holidaymakers are ditching the mere 34C temperatures of the UK for something a little more sizzling on the Continent. According to On the Beach, in the past 48 hours, bookings to Europe increased 23% and there was a whopping 47% increase in bookings leaving in the next week. Portugal, France and Spain all suffered through temperatures of up to 40 degrees Celsius on Tuesday, but for many Brits looking to be abroad, that feels preferable to staying put. A record number of heat alerts are in place across France as the country and other parts of southern and eastern Europe remain in the grip of soaring temperatures. Despite the clear risk of heatwaves as intense as the one scorching Europe right now, clearly many Brits feel things could be a little hotter. Bookings to Amsterdam and Paris reached record highs this Monday, with On the Beach recording a 178% increase in bookings to Paris year on year. Perhaps they are attracted to the quality of heat, as opposed to the quantity of Celsius. The UK heat is famously muggy, sticky, and airless, with little breeze and minimal chance of proper cooling off at night. Homes aren't designed for heat, and air conditioning is rare, leaving people tossing and turning through humid, sleepless nights. In contrast, much of southern Europe is built for the heat. Even at 35 or 40 degrees, there's often dry, baking sunshine rather than the suffocating humidity Brits face at home. Zoe Harris, chief customer officer at On the Beach, said: 'It's official, Europe is roasting and Brits can't get enough of it. Let's be honest, 35 degrees in Spain feels like a glorious bake in the sun, while 28 in the UK feels like trying to sleep in a damp greenhouse. As soon as Brits see Europe heating up, they book their almost immediate escape, because roasting under a Spanish sun is paradise compared to stewing in the UK's clammy heat.' 'City break bookings have jumped by 32% in the past 24 hours as Brits rush to make the most of Europe's scorching heatwave. It's not just the beaches calling this time, urban getaways are booming too.
