Sabbi scores, Vancouver Whitecaps blank struggling Sporting Kansas City 3-0
VANCOUVER - Yohei Takaoka chalked up yet another clean sheet as the Vancouver Whitecaps blanked Sporting Kansas City 3-0 on Saturday. The Japanese goalkeeper stopped all three on-target shots he faced to earn his Major League Soccer-leading 11th shutout of the season. Emmanuel Sabbi got the 'Caps (13-5-6) on the board in the 35th minute, J.C. Ngando doubled the lead before halftime and Mathias Laborda sealed the score at 3-0 with a goal in the 87th minute. The home side controlled 54.2 per cent of possession across the game and outshot the visitors 22-12, with a 5-3 edge in on-target shots. Kansas City (6-12-6) is now winless in its last three games (0-2-1) and sit third last in the Western Conference standings. The Whitecaps are unbeaten in their last three outings (2-0-1) and are a single point behind San Diego FC for top spot in the West. Kansas City challenged the 'Caps early on Saturday, repeatedly stripping the home side of the ball through the first 10 minutes. Vancouver settled in and took control of the match midway through the first half. The Whitecaps opened the scoring in the 35th minute when Jayden Nelson sliced a ball across the top of the six-yard box to Sabbi, who slid and poked a shot in past SKC goalkeeper John Pulskamp to make it 1-0. The goal was Sabbi's sixth across all competitions this season. He came close to adding to the tally before the halftime whistle. The American striker sent a shot up and over the Kansas City net in the 38th minute, then sent a low ball sailing just wide of the post in the 41st. A rebound helped double Vancouver's lead in the 43rd minute. Sebastian Berhalter nodded a shot toward the net but his attempt was blocked and the ball popped out to Ngando, who put a right-footed shot in just over Pulskamp's outstretched arm. His second goal of the season gave the 'Caps a 2-0 lead. The home side controlled 56.8 per cent of possession across the first half and held a 12-5 edge in shots, including the only two on-target shots of the frame. Kansas City pushed to get on the board early in the second half and got a solid chance in the 55th minute. Left winger Daniel Salloi snuck through the Vancouver defence and unleashed a rocket from the top of the penalty area, but Takaoka dove to make the save. The 'Caps appeared to go up 3-0 in the 68th minute when striker Brian White touched a shot into the back of the SKC net, but the goal was quickly ruled offside. White was one of four Whitecaps players who took part in Major League Soccer's all-star festivities earlier in the week. Laborda put away Vancouver's third goal of the night in the 87th minute off a corner kick. Berhalter — who also represented the 'Caps at the MLS all-star game — floated a ball into the six-yard box and Laborda nodded it in under Pulskamp's arm for his third goal of the campaign. NOTES Bjorn Utvik started at centre back, replacing Ranko Veselinovic. The Whitecaps announced Tuesday that the Serbian defender will be out for the remainder of the season after tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee during last week's 1-1 draw with San Diego FC. … Vancouver midfielder Andreas Cubas left the game at halftime with groin tightness. He was replaced by Ralph Priso. … An announced crowd of 20,719 took in the Whitecaps' 12th annual Pride match. NEXT UP The Whitecaps return to action on Aug. 9 when they visit the San Jose Earthquakes. Sporting will host San Diego FC the same night. Inter Miami coach blasts MLS decision to discipline Lionel Messi for All-Star absence
FORT LAUDERDALE, FL — Inter Miami coach Javier Mascherano criticized Major League Soccer's decision to suspend Lionel Messi for the team's home match vs. FC Cincinnati on Saturday, July 26 over skipping the All-Star Game. Messi and Jordi Alba were both out due to league discipline as Inter Miami and Cincinnati played to a scoreless draw at Chase Stadium. 'Now I have a question: What if today's game was an away game?" Mascherano said afterwards. "Would you ask for Leo not to play? Because when it comes to filling stadiums and making money, no one complains. 'The thing is: This game happened to be a home game. That's the issue. I'll leave it up to you to decide.' Mascherano also questioned officiating against Inter Miami. The club is the only team in the league to not have a penalty kick granted this season. There were two instances against Cincinnati where they should have received a penalty call, Inter Miami contested. Luis Suarez and Fafa Picault incurred contact on two separate plays, but no penalty was awarded. 'A team that has scored as many goals as we have in MLS … zero penalties,' Mascherano said. 'Strange, considering how much we're in the area, zero penalties. I'll leave that for you to think about.' Inter Miami did get the most controversial call of the match to go their way against Cincinnati, though. Cincinnati's Miles Robinson scored a header (90'+3'), but appeared to hit Inter Miami defender Noah Allen in the head during the score. The play was ruled a foul on the field, and VAR wasn't enough to overturn it to a goal. 'The referee delayed the whistle to allow the opportunity for VAR to review for a possible goal. After the VAR check, the referee's decision was confirmed,' lead referee Tori Penso said in a pool report after the match. Mascherano was seen yelling 'do your job' at least twice towards officials, including Penso, resulting in a yellow card being shown in the first-year coach's direction in the 70th minute. Both sides earned one point in the standings after the draw. Inter Miami maintained fifth place in the MLS Eastern Conference with 42 points, while Cincinnati (49 points) dropped to second place behind Philadelphia (50 points).

Inter Miami plays FC Cincinnati to 0-0 draw without suspended Messi
Inter Miami played FC Cincinnati to a 0-0 draw without the suspended Lionel Messi on Saturday night. Messi was not available after he and teammate Jordi Alba were suspended one match by Major League Soccer for skipping the All-Star game. Messi was still in attendance on Saturday, watching from a suite at Chase Stadium. Inter Miami co-owner Jorge Mas called the punishment "draconian" on Friday, saying that Messi was "extremely upset" at the suspension that sidelined him for an important match as Miami pushes for its second-straight MLS Supporters' Shield. Miami coach Javier Mascherano questioned if the league would have still suspended Messi if Inter Miami had been playing an away game. "To fill stadiums and sell tickets, nobody complains," Mascherano said through an interpreter Saturday, adding that the team had informed MLS that Messi was dealing with fatigue because of Miami's congested schedule. "It's strange," Mascherano said, "one day they say something, and the next day they say something else. We all heard what was said — that it was understandable the number of matches that he had been playing." Miami and Cincinnati both entered the matchup as winners of six of their last seven. Cincinnati, which routed Messi and Inter Miami 3-0 last Wednesday, is second in the Supporters' Shield standings with 49 points, while Inter Miami is fifth with 42 points. Cincinnati defender Miles Robinson nearly scored the winner a couple minutes into stoppage time on Saturday when he headed home MVP candidate Evander's free kick, but the goal was disallowed because of a foul. Veteran striker Luis Suárez made several incredible passes in the opening minutes, including one to Fafà Picault, whose header was denied by Cincinnati goalkeeper Roman Celentano. Before the match, Miami introduced Argentine midfielder Rodrigo De Paul, Messi's good friend and national team buddy who officially signed with the club on Friday. Fans at Chase Stadium cheered and waved welcome signs as the new Miami star walked onto the pitch. "I'm going to give everything I have," De Paul told the crowd.
