Tornado Alley has become almost everything east of the Rockies — and it's been a violent year
Violent tornado outbreaks, like the storms that tore through parts of St. Louis and London, Kentucky, on May 16, have made 2025 seem like an especially active, deadly and destructive year for tornadoes.
The U.S. has had more reported tornadoes than normal — over 960 as of May 22, according to the National Weather Service's preliminary count.
That's well above the national average of around 660 tornadoes reported by that point over the past 15 years, and it's similar to 2024 — the second-most active year over that same period.
I'm an atmospheric scientist who studies natural hazards. What stands out about 2025 so far isn't just the number of tornadoes, but how Tornado Alley has encompassed just about everything east of the Rockies, and how tornado season is becoming all year.
The high tornado count in 2025 has a lot to do with the weather in March, which broke records with 299 reported tornadoes — far exceeding the average of 80 for that month over the past three decades.
March's numbers were driven by two large tornado outbreaks: about 115 tornadoes swept across more than a dozen states March 14-16, stretching from Arkansas to Pennsylvania; and 145 tornadoes hit March 31 to April 1, primarily in a swath from Arkansas to Iowa and eastward. The 2025 numbers are preliminary pending final analyses.
While meteorologists don't know for sure why March was so active, there were a couple of ingredients that favor tornadoes:
First, in March the climate was in a weak La Niña pattern, which is associated with a wavier and stormier jet stream and, often, with more U.S. tornadoes.
Second, the waters of the Gulf were much warmer than normal, which feeds moister air inland to fuel severe thunderstorms.
By April and May, however, those ingredients had faded. The weak La Niña ended and the Gulf waters were closer to normal.
April and May also produced tornado outbreaks, but the preliminary count over most of this period, since the March 31-April 1 outbreak, has actually been close to the average, though things could still change.
What has stood out in April and May is persistence: The jet stream has remained wavy, bringing with it the normal ebb and flow of stormy low-pressure weather systems mixed with sunny high-pressure systems. In May alone, tornadoes were reported in Colorado, Minnesota, Delaware, Florida and just about every state in between.
Years with fewer tornadoes often have calm periods of a couple of weeks or longer when a sunny high-pressure system is parked over the central U.S. However, the U.S. didn't really get one of those calm periods in spring 2025.
The locations of these storms have also been notable: The 2025 tornadoes through May have been widespread but clustered near the lower and central Mississippi Valley, stretching from Illinois to Mississippi.
That's well to the east of traditional Tornado Alley, typically seen as stretching from Texas through Nebraska, and farther east than normal. April through May is still peak season for the Mississippi Valley, though it is usually on the eastern edge of activity rather than at the epicenter. The normal seasonal cycle of tornadoes moves inland from near the Gulf Coast in winter to the upper Midwest and Great Plains by summer.
Over the past few decades, the U.S. has seen a broad shift in tornadoes in three ways: to the east, earlier in the year and clustered into larger outbreaks.
Winter tornadoes have become more frequent over the eastern U.S., from the southeast, dubbed Dixie Alley for its tornado activity in recent years, to the Midwest, particularly Kentucky, Illinois and Indiana.
Meanwhile, there has been a steady and stark decline in tornadoes in the 'traditional' tornado season and region: spring and summer in general, especially across the Great Plains.
It may come as a surprise that the U.S. has actually seen a decrease in overall U.S. tornado activity over the past several decades, especially for intense tornadoes categorized as EF2 and above. There have been fewer days with a tornado. However, those tornado days have been producing more tornadoes. These trends may have stabilized over the past decade.
This eastward shift is likely making tornadoes deadlier.
Tornadoes in the Southeastern U.S. are more likely to strike overnight, when people are asleep and cannot quickly protect themselves, which makes these events dramatically more dangerous. The tornado that hit London, Kentucky, struck after 11 p.m. Many of the victims were over age 65.
The shift toward more winter tornadoes has also left people more vulnerable. Since they may not expect tornadoes at that time of year, they are likely to be less prepared. Tornado detection and forecasting is rapidly improving and has saved thousands of lives over the past 50-plus years, but forecasts can save lives only if people are able to receive them.
This shift in tornadoes to the east and earlier in the year is very similar to how scientists expect severe thunderstorms to change as the world warms. However, researchers don't know whether the overall downward trend in tornadoes is driven by warming or will continue into the future. Field campaigns studying how tornadoes form may help us better answer this question
For safety, it's time to stop focusing on spring as tornado season and the Great Plains as Tornado Alley.
Tornado Alley is really all of the U.S. east of the Rockies and west of the Appalachians for most of the year. The farther south you live, the longer your tornado season lasts.
Forecasters say it every year for hurricanes, and we badly need to start saying it for tornadoes too: It only takes one to make it a bad season for you or your community. Just ask the residents of London, Kentucky; St. Louis; Plevna and Grinnell, Kansas; and McNairy County, Tennessee.
Listen to your local meteorologists so you will know when your region is facing a tornado risk. And if you hear sirens or are under a tornado warning, immediately go to your safe space. A tornado may already be on the ground, and you may have only seconds to protect yourself.

Early morning storms cause wind damage, power outages in Grand Forks
Jul. 27—GRAND FORKS — A line of thunderstorms that blew through early Sunday morning caused wind damage in Greater Grand Forks and tornado warnings south of the city. The National Weather Service office in Grand Forks reported that the line of thunderstorms caused wind gusts up to 73 mph as it went through the city shortly after 2 a.m. Sunday, July 27. The NWS has gotten reports of tree damage and parts of the city and the county, but not many reports of hail, which was a possibility with the storm. "The line of severe storms had mainly winds as they came through Grand Forks County," said Jennifer Ritterling, a NWS meteorologist. "I've seen several (wind damage) reports and some have called in with trees down and large branches." And as of Sunday morning, there was a chance that more storm weather could be on the way, into Sunday evening. "There is a continued chance for some severe weather, albeit not as high as it was (Saturday)," Ritterling said. "Greatest chances are going to be south and east, more lake country than over Grand Forks." Two tornado warnings were posted south of Grand Forks as the storms went through, in the areas of Northwood and Thompson. All warnings have since expired. Power was knocked out in parts of Grand Forks and East Grand Forks, according to reports from Xcel Energy, East Grand Forks Water and Light and Grand Forks Emergency Management. Crews are working to get power restored, and all outages in East Grand Forks were resolved Sunday morning. Outages in parts of Grand Forks continued into the morning, with around 1,324 customers without power as of 9:30 a.m., according to Grand Forks Emergency Management. Damage throughout the city mostly involved downed tree branches, although construction signs were blown over and garbage cans were strewn throughout town. Devin McCleary, an employee of the Grand Forks Parks Department, said he was called to work at roughly 7 a.m. He spent Sunday morning with a lift truck and chainsaw, clearing downed branches from streets. "Right now, we're just getting rid of hazards and the stuff that's blocking the streets and safety issues and then we'll come back through and actually clean it up," he said. The damage, he said, "is pretty decent, but I've seen worse," he said. The city did not receive any damage to infrastructure, according to Grand Forks City Administrator Todd Feland. The city is currently assessing tree damage and will be supporting the Grand Forks Park District in cleanup for trees that fell or received damage. "The streets are strewn with leaves and branches, so we'll get those cleaned up this week with street sweepers and see if we have to do some pick-up with trucks with some of the trees," Feland said. Unofficial rainfall numbers showed less than a quarter-inch in Sunday morning's storm. After Sunday, the weather is expected to calm, with highs in the mid-70s to 80s and mostly sunny weather. Berkeley study warns wildfire evacuations could take hours, gridlock streets
With the cool, damp weather the Bay has seen this summer, the threat of wildfire may be far from most people's minds. But the city of Berkeley has been thinking about it, and a new study they've commissioned says it may take a lot longer for people to evacuate a wildfire zone than they may imagine. Berkeley was wondering what would happen if they had to evacuate large parts of the city in a large urban wildfire, like Palisades or Paradise? But they didn't have to imagine because it actually happened there, a long time ago. On Sept. 17, 1923, high winds drove a grass fire into Berkeley neighborhoods that burned more than 600 homes and made all the national newsreels. That was before the hills were covered with the eucalyptus trees that Henry DeNero, President of the Berkeley FireSafe Council, calls "the line of fire." "Depending on where the fire starts, if the eucalyptus canopy gets ignited in the wind, we're going to have an ember storm that is, I think, very different than the ember storm we've seen in some of these other fires," he said. "A fire today in Tilden Park with a 40-mph Diablo wind would send hundreds of thousands, if not tens of millions of embers into the city. And it wouldn't just be the Berkeley hills. They will go all the way down. They will go miles into the city." DeNero was reacting to a study commissioned by the city that estimates that, in some neighborhoods, it could take four hours for people to evacuate. The study uses the boundaries of the 1923 fire and says that with the current number of automobiles being used on the narrow, winding streets, a similar fire in the area could end up being a major disaster as the streets become gridlocked with panicked evacuees. "I think the four-hour estimate is reasonable in an orderly evacuation," DeNero said. "I think the real issue is, can there BE an orderly evacuation? If the alarms went off and AC Alert said, 'This is a mandatory evacuation, there's a fire in Tilden Park,' I think the Berkeley Hills would become jammed with cars within minutes. Everyone would try to leave at the same time. And then I think a four-hour evacuation is problematic. People would leave on foot as they did in the 1991 Oakland fire." Berkeley has a unique system of walking paths and stairs that could be used to get people down out of the hills in a hurry on foot. And most living in the area have been planning on that for years. "If we needed to leave, we'd be on foot," said Cragmont resident Danny Levie, "because in a car, everybody trying to get in their cars? It just wouldn't work." "Imagine with an emergency, possibly at night, with smoke, people a little bit in a panic, the paths are going to be your best way down, on foot," said Colleen Neff with the Berkeley Path Wanderers Association. "The problem with that," said DeNero, "is we have a significant elderly population in the Berkeley hills. And so, those who can't walk out, or run out, or get on a bicycle, will be stuck in the hills, particularly if the streets are jammed with traffic or abandoned cars." The study points out that the road barriers that Berkeley has erected to block traffic flow into neighborhoods may also be a problem during a mass exodus. So, the city is recommending that people "pre-evacuate" by leaving their homes during extreme fire weather conditions. But DeNero thinks that may not be a realistic solution. "The challenge there is how do you get a significant percent of the population to leave when there's no fire?" he said. "And I don't think that has been thought through yet. I think some creativity needs to come to play here. And I think we may have a problem that isn't really solvable." We don't like to think of problems as "unsolvable," but that may be what Berkeley is facing when it comes to wildfire. They can plan for an orderly evacuation, but if history has taught us anything, it's that people's human nature tends to kick in when they're running for their lives.
