Under the scheme, Rs 10,000 is provided to differently-abled persons for 21 different kinds of surgeries and up to Rs 6 lakh for cochlear implants.
"In 2024-25 alone, 214 hearing-impaired children received implants worth Rs 12.84 crore, which greatly enhanced their quality of life. The initiative is a vital step toward empowering divyangjans and promoting their self-reliance. Beyond financial aid, the scheme fosters social inclusion by enabling access to transformative procedures like cochlear implants and surgeries like corneal plasticity and post-polio correction," said a govt spokesperson.
The department of empowerment of persons with disabilities is responsible for implementing the scheme. The department is working to identify eligible beneficiaries under the initiative, particularly those from economically weaker sections who cannot afford high-cost surgeries.
Minister of state (independent) for backward classes welfare and divyangjan empowerment Narendra Kashyap said: "In the previous financial year, 214 children from 63 districts received cochlear implants. We are working towards expanding and strengthening the scheme so that more Divyangjans can benefit from it and ensure inclusive and equitable development in Uttar Pradesh."

145 % rise in taxpayers since GST rollout in Gujarat; number of taxpayers crosses 12.66 lakh in 8 years
Gandhinagar (Gujarat) [India], July 8 (ANI): Since the implementation of Goods and Services Tax (GST) in 2017, Gujarat has witnessed a steady annual increase in the number of new taxpayers. Eight years ago, when GST was introduced, the state had over 5.15 lakh registered taxpayers. As of FY 2024-25, this number has surged by 145 per cent, surpassing 12.46 lakh, more than double the original count. According to an official release, in terms of registered taxpayers, Gujarat now ranks third in the country, reflecting its growing economic activity and exemplary tax compliance. In FY 2024-25, Gujarat recorded a taxpayer growth rate of 6.38 per cent, significantly higher than the national average of 3.86 per cent and ahead of many other states. There was a time when Gujarat, like the rest of India, operated under a complex tax structure comprising VAT, CST, Octroi, Entry Tax, Service Tax, and Central Excise Duty. This fragmented system posed significant challenges for traders, making tax compliance cumbersome and time-consuming. The lack of uniformity in tax rates and regulations across states, coupled with the cascading effect of 'tax on tax', led to inflated costs of goods and created barriers to seamless trade. For a business-driven and export-oriented state like Gujarat, these complications were particularly burdensome. To address these challenges and provide a new direction for the country's economy, the Goods and Services Tax (GST) was implemented in India on July 1, 2017, under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. With this reform, the country adopted a single tax--GST--for the supply of goods and services, while doing away with multiple other taxes. Guided by the principle of 'One Nation, One Tax,' GST has simplified the tax system, reduced tax evasion, and paved the way for ease of doing business. With the implementation of GST, the process of tax calculation and payment has become significantly simpler for both traders and consumers. Alongside the steady rise in the number of taxpayers, Gujarat has witnessed a substantial increase in its GST revenue. Under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and Finance Minister Kanubhai Desai, the state registered GST collections of Rs 1,36,748 crore in FY 2024-25, marking a year-on-year increase of Rs 11,579 crore. Gujarat now ranks third among Indian states in terms of GST revenue contribution, accounting for 8.2 per cent of the country's domestic GST collections. The release emphasised that Gujarat has not only consistently maintained a leading position in GST collections but has also registered a notable increase in revenue from SGST and IGST. In FY 2024-25, the state garnered Rs 73,200 crore through SGST and IGST, marking a rise of Rs 8,752 crore compared to the previous fiscal year. While the national average growth rate for SGST and IGST revenue stood at 10.31 per cent, Gujarat surpassed it with an impressive 13.6 per cent growth. The state also leads the country in the timely filing of GST returns. Gujarat achieved 88.9 per cent compliance in GSTR-3B filing and 85.5 per cent in GSTR-1 filing within the prescribed timelines, underscoring its disciplined and robust tax administration, the release stated. "Something which Rahul Gandhi had cautioned": Congress targets Centre over Jane Street's alleged market manipulation, demands accountability
New Delhi [India], July 8 (ANI): Congress leader Supriya Shrinate on Tuesday launched a scathing attack on the Modi government, alleging gross regulatory failure in the wake of accusations against American algo-trading giant Jane Street Group. Speaking to ANI, Shrinate claimed that the firm manipulated Indian stock and derivatives markets between January 2023 and March 2025, earning illegal profits of over Rs 44,000 crore, most of which was allegedly siphoned off to the United States. 'An American algo-trading company, Jane Street, started operations in Indian in 2020. It dealt in both the share market and the derivative market. It was dealing in such a large volume that it was manipulating stock price in share market and was earning illegal profits in F&O market. Between January 2023 and March 2025, it earned a profit of around Rs 44,000 sent this profit to America. SEBI has now issued an order that they are seizing Rs 4400 is suffering due to this? Small investors of this country - something which Rahul Gandhi had cautioned about again and question is that when Jane Street tells US Court that they earned 2.3 billion dollars due to inefficiencies in India, when market investors are writing to you, why did you stay silent? Why did you not do anything?' Shrinate said. The Congress leader further questioned the government's silence, calling for answers from Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, and demanding that steps be taken to recover the remaining funds from abroad. 'The Government will be questioned now because Narendra Modi and Amit Shah pose as market experts and offer suggestions on the stock market, now when people are losing their money and company is earning profits illegally and sending to the US, what would you do now? You can't be silent. Would you be able to speak with Donald Trump and retrieve the money?' Supriya Shrinate said. On July 3, SEBI in its order noted that the US-based firm used a profit-maximising scheme to manipulate the market and booked substantial profits in index options, while incurring smaller losses in the cash and futures segments. SEBI further stated that Jane Street Group entities, despite caution letters from NSE in February 2025 and their own commitments to refrain from certain trading behaviours, continued to deploy the same high-risk and market-distorting strategies. SEBI sources later said that the interim order against the index manipulation matter concerning Jane Street should not be considered a show-cause notice. The investigations into the US-based investment firm will continue, the sources had added. 'It is difficult to estimate how long all this (probe) could take - the scope is quite large,' the sources had asserted. (ANI)

Karnataka approves Rs 244 cr for Annabhagya amid lorry strike
Bengaluru, July 8 (UNI) The Karnataka government has sanctioned an additional Rs 244.10 crore to cover increased costs under the Annabhagya scheme for the February-May 2025 period, amid a continuing lorry strike triggered by unpaid transportation dues amounting to Rs 250 crore. The newly approved funds are aimed at addressing wholesale and retail margins and transportation charges, excluding the cost of rice procurement. This follows a prior allocation of Rs 2,082.99 crore for purchasing additional rice and other associated expenses under the same scheme, of which Rs 21.79 crore remains unutilized. The lorry strike, now entering a critical phase, has halted food grain movement across the state, raising concerns about ration supply disruptions. Truck owners have warned of worsening logistics delays unless the government settles the long-pending arrears. Opposition parties have slammed the Congress-led administration for what they call fiscal mismanagement and warned that failure to resolve the strike could paralyze the state's public distribution system. They have demanded an immediate resolution to safeguard food security for economically vulnerable sections. The Annabhagya scheme, a flagship welfare program, provides free rice to below-povertyline families and is seen as politically crucial for the ruling dispensation. However, the ongoing financial strain and operational bottlenecks have exposed governance gaps in scheme implementation and payment logistics. The Finance and Food & Civil Supplies departments are expected to hold joint talks with transport unions this week in an attempt to break the deadlock. UNI BDN RKM
