Both NCP factions to mark 26th anniversary in Pune
Both parties – the NCP led by Ajit Pawar and the NCP (SP) led by his uncle, Sharad Pawar – have chosen Pune as the venue. Most importantly, leaders as well as the rank and file from both factions are hoping to get clarity on whether the two parties will merge, a subject that has fuelled much speculation lately.
Ajit Pawar has booked a part of the Balewadi sports complex, where seating arrangements will be made for 15,000 office-bearers. 'It should be seen as a show of strength of the party against the backdrop of the local body elections scheduled in the next few months,' said a senior NCP leader.
He said they were expecting 15,000 to 20,000 delegates from across the state. 'The celebrations will start in the morning and conclude with Ajit Pawar's speech,' he said. 'Pune is a central place for people coming from Western Maharashtra, the Konkan, Marathwada and North Maharashtra. Only those coming from Vidarbha will find it inconvenient.'
The two NCPs have been at daggers drawn ever since Ajit Pawar walked out of the undivided NCP with 40 MLAs in July 2023, to join the BJP-led Mahayuti government in the state. He was rewarded with the post of deputy chief minister.
During the local body elections, the two factions will fight a pitched battle for control over Western Maharashtra, a stronghold of the NCP for decades. In the state assembly elections, Ajit Pawar emerged as the stronger of the two Pawars in the region.
For the anniversary celebrations, Sharad Pawar has booked Bal Gandharva Rang Mandir, an auditorium with a capacity of around 1,000. 'Pawar saheb will guide all of us by addressing the gathering,' said Ankush Kakade, spokesperson of the NCP (SP).
NCP (SP) leaders said they are anxious to get clarity on whether the two NCP factions will reconcile their differences and reunite. 'The speculation has created confusion among the cadre. We all are hoping the party leadership will clear the air on the anniversary, and guide us on how to plan our poll strategy,' said a senior party functionary.
Last year, on the undivided NCP's silver jubilee, the Ajit Pawar-led faction celebrated the occasion at Shanmukhananda Hall in Mumbai, while the Sharad Pawar-led NCP (SP) celebrated it in Ahmednagar.

LED screens, banners up across city ahead of Thackeray cousins' victory rally
Two decades after they parted ways, following a power tussle, Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray will be seen in a joint rally in Worli today. The victory rally titled, 'Awaj Marathicha' (voice of Marathi) was planned by the two parties together after the ruling Mahayuti government rolled back its decision to make Hindi mandatory as a third language in the state's primary schools recently, following a strong opposition both from Raj and Uddhav, and intellectuals from civil society. Thane, India - July -02, 2025: On the 5th july Saturday , the joint victory meeting of MNS and ShivSena (UBT) (Raj Thackray and uddhav Thackray ) will be held in Warali Mumbai (due to the withdrawal of the Hindi language compulsory GR), therefore, MNS and ShivSena UBT banners have been put up together in Wagle Estate Thane city ,in Thane,in Mumbai, India, on, Wednesday, July -02, 2025. ( Praful Gangurde / HT Photo ) (praful Gangurde) It has been observed in political circles that the Thackeray cousins uniting over a common cause could also set the stage for their political reunion, especially with an eye on the local body elections later in the year. Both parties have pulled out all the stops to put up a strong show of strength for the rally, which is being held at the NSCI Dome, Worli. A leader from Sena (UBT) told HT that while the auditorium's capacity is 8,000, the audience turnout is likely to be far more. However, those that are unable to reach the venue can watch the event on LED screens which have been set up outside the auditorium. Marathi director-producer Ajit Bhure will anchor the event. 'We have erected a grand stage with the map of Maharashtra in the background, headlined 'Awaj Marathicha'. We have arranged nearly 6000 chairs. Tents have been set up on all sides of the NSCI Dome, and screens propped up high on footpaths. We expect people to come spontaneously. Traffic on Annie Besant Road may have to be stopped,' said MNS leader Yashwant Killedar. Earlier, senior leaders such as Anil Parab from Shiv Sena (UBT) and Bala Nandgaonkar from MNS were assigned to oversee the planning and arrangements, which they have been executing with the help of their respective leaders through the week. The duo also held a meeting of functionaries to ensure everything goes according to plan. Local leaders have also been asked to set up LED screens in their areas. Teasers showing both brothers as lions fighting a cackle of hyenas are doing the rounds on social media and banners showing the cousins with Shiv Sena founder, the late Bal Thackeray, have been placed at several places across Mumbai, particularly Lalbaug, Parel, Dadar and Worli, and the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). The messages writ large are: 'Who brings down the government to its knees? Marathi manoos' and 'Unity of the Marathi people is the need of the time and real strength for us.' Kunal Manikar, MNS's western Mumbai chief, said: 'The Marathi mandals have heeded our call. A Jai Jawan Govinda Mandal will form a human pyramid at the venue.' Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Kishori Pednekar said, 'Though the rally is for the cause of Marathi, it could be the beginning of a renewed alliance between the cousins ahead of the local body polls.' Another leader from the party, Vinayak Raut, said, 'People will come from across Maharashtra to see the two brothers together. Leaders from allied parties such as Jayant Patil of NCP (SP), and CPI and CPM will join us.' HT has learnt that the heads of Sena (UBT) allies in the Opposition – NCP (SP) chief Sharad Pawar and Congress chief Harshwardhan Sapkal – will not attend the rally, although their representatives will participate

Cong must name its meeting ‘Samajika Anyaya Samara Bheri': Bandi Sanjay
Hyderabad: Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Bandi Sanjay Kumar questioned the Congress party holding the 'Samajika Samara Bheri' (public meeting on struggles for Social Justice) in the city, attended by AICC Chief Mallikarjun Kharge. He said on Friday, the Congress party has ruled the 'country and our state for more than half a century, yet has never appointed a Backward Class (BC) person as Prime Minister or Chief Minister.' It exposes the betrayal of the people, especially as they have failed to implement even the six guarantees that would primarily benefit Dalits, backwards classes, and weaker sections. Against this backdrop, he demanded the justification for holding the meeting. He demanded that AICC President Mallikarjun Kharge answer the people. Otherwise, this meeting should be renamed to 'Social Injustice Samara Bheri.' He said in contrast to the Congress, the BJP appointed Ram Nath Kovind, a Dalit; Draupadi Murmu, a tribal; and Abdul Kalam, a minority, as President. The BJP's history includes providing positions to 27 OBCs, 12 Dalits, 6 minorities, and 8 women in the central cabinet—a historic achievement. The BJP has also appointed him, a BC, as a central minister. Sanjay Kumar noted that he, along with other BC leaders like Dr. K. Laxman and Bandaru Dattatreya, has received significant positions. The Congress party, which once mocked Modi—who also comes from a BC background—as a 'chaiwala' if he were Prime Minister, has much to answer for. The Karimnagar MP recalled Modi's announcement that if the BJP comes to power in Telangana, a BC will become the Chief Minister. He further challenged Congress on how many BCs have been appointed in the Congress state's cabinet, 'even though they claim that BCs make up more than 50 per cent of the population.' He pointed out that if BC leader Ponnam Prabhakar had been given a position, it would have been a step toward justice for BCs. How can Congress justify holding a social justice rally when they have denied BC representation? He also criticized the Congress for failing to provide women with promised financial support, such as Rs. 2,500 per month, Rs. 4,000 as a pension, Rs. 4,000 as unemployment benefits, Rs. 5 lakh in assurance for students, and Rs. 21,000 per acre for farmers, along with bonus payments. Why have they failed to deliver on the 420 promises in their manifesto, including the six guarantees? AICC President Mallikarjun Kharge needs to address these questions at the social justice rally, he demanded. Regarding the shortage of fertilisers, he stated that the Congress and BRS parties are unfairly blaming the central government for the urea shortage as the local body elections approach. Minister Tummala Nageswara Rao, who is experienced, is being misled by wrong information. During the last agriculture season, 'Telangana required 9 lakh metric tons of urea, but the central government supplied 12 lakh metric tons. It was 3 lakh metric tons more than what the state of Telangana requested. The Centre is willing to provide the same or more during the current agriculture season.' However, he questioned where the additional urea that remained from the earlier agriculture season went and criticised the state for blaming the Centre without accounting for these discrepancies. 'The onus is on the state government to take appropriate action if there are any hurdles. The Centre is willing to consider Minister Tummala Nageswara Rao's requests favourably. The state must communicate the facts to the public.

Ram To Kali, Veg To Mutton: With Samik As Boss, BJP Gets Belated Image Makeover In Bengal
Last Updated: With the assembly election results due in May 2026, there is limited time for BJP's cadres and leaders to capitalise on these changes It was late March 2021, and the West Bengal election campaign was at its peak as the summer in rural parts became unbearable. In the Lalgarh area of Jhargram district, once a Maoist stronghold, the Bharatiya Janata Party held an election rally. Locals, mostly from the Santhal community, gathered to listen in the sweltering afternoon when the star speaker, Uttar Pradesh deputy chief minister Keshav Prasad Maurya, arrived and delivered his nearly 30-minute speech, ending with ' Jai Shri Ram '. There was hardly any applause. The lack of response wasn't due to dislike for Maurya, but because the Santhals of Bengal barely understand Bengali, let alone Hindi—a simple fact the BJP local leadership overlooked. Many BJP national leaders in Bengal in 2021 failed to make an impact. For years, it was evident, but very few Bengal BJP leaders had the courage to tell the party's central leadership that they were seen as outsiders. While this perception is largely due to the ruling Trinamool Congress's well-planned narrative curated by poll strategists I-PAC, part of the blame lies with the BJP. After their loss, BJP leaders began speaking openly, with some turning rebel within party forums. Four years later, with less than a year until the next assembly election, the BJP seems to have recognised the merit in those arguments and has recalibrated to align itself with Bengali ethos and culture. Urban Bhadralok and 'Jai Ma Kali' The choice of the BJP's new state president suggests the party now wants urban votes it previously claimed not to need. Unlike Sukanta Majumdar from Balurghat in South Dinajpur and Suvendu Adhikari from Nandigram in East Medinipur, Samik Bhattacharya is a resident of Salt Lake City near Kolkata. Suave, proficient in English and Hindi, and with an excellent command of Bengali, Bhattacharya prefers shirts and trousers over kurta and pajama, making him relatable to middle-class Bengalis. In 2021, the TMC dominated Greater Kolkata and did well in urban areas with over 50% vote share. With a Bengali 'bhadralok" as party boss, the BJP sought to remake its image into a Bengali party. Over the last ten years, Lord Ram has stormed Bengal's socio-political milieu with 'Jai Shri Ram". Though Lord Ram is familiar to Bengal, he was never introduced as a political tool, depicted more like a Bengali man in granny stories. While VHP, Bajrang Dal, and BJP heavily promoted Ram Navami and Hanuman Jayanti, Bengal has always been about Goddess Kali and Jagannath Mahaprabhu. 'Jai Ma Kali" is not a slogan but a personal utterance. The BJP seems to have understood this. During the handover ceremony, Syama Prasad Mookerjee's photo was on one side, PM Modi's photo was on the other, and between them was a grand elevated photo of Goddess Kali. When in Rome, do as the Romans do. West Bengal's co-incharge Amit Malviya's statement that his party will 'reclaim Bengal's true identity" and allegations that 'TMC is attempting to Urdu-fy Bengal" clearly indicate that BJP is fighting not just elections but for 'the soul of Bengal". In the days to come, we will reclaim Bengal's true identity, rooted in Maa Kali, Maa Durga, Devi Chandi, Mahaprabhu Chaitanya, and the fearless spirit of Banga BJP is the only pro-Bengali party born in Bengal. Others are either political imports or dynastic offshoots… — Amit Malviya (@amitmalviya) July 4, 2025 What's veg? 98% eat non-veg here Lastly, there has been a shift towards non-vegetarianism in the West Bengal BJP with Samik Bhattacharya's accession. On the day Ravi Shankar Prasad officially announced him as West Bengal's next BJP president, the media crew was offered pulao and mutton curry, say sources. However, for the 5,000 BJP cadres and leaders, the menu was a simple vegetarian meal—rice, dal, and vegetables. This is significant since the TMC portrays the BJP as a 'vegetarian party" and suggests electing it would mean giving up fish, a staple in Bengali households. This April, after a purported video of saffron-clad men forcing fish shop owners near a temple in Delhi's CR Park to shut their establishments was played out in Bengal, TMC MP Mahua Moitra shared the clip on her X handle and questioned if the BJP would dictate what to eat and where to have legal shops. BJP's Bishnupur (West Bengal) MP Saumitra Khan clarified that the three individuals threatening fish shop owners were not BJP members, but the damage was done in West Bengal. Though the BJP in West Bengal has organised meals with chicken for a few years, Bengali mutton is considered the quintessential meat. Samik Bhattacharya's era seems to have embraced this as well. Is it enough? While the recent changes were overdue, earlier implementation could have given the party a chance to yield political benefits. With the assembly election results due in May 2026, there is limited time for BJP's cadres and leaders to capitalise on these changes. Despite many leaders personally being non-vegetarian, BJP cadres and leaders shying away from publicly eating non-veg meals at large events during Samik Bhattacharya's accession reaffirms TMC's narrative that the saffron party will stop Bengalis from eating fish if it comes to power. In Tripura, Sunil Deodhar learnt Kokborok and publicly ate fish to resonate with the state's population, leading to the BJP's sweep five years later. A senior BJP leader like Malviya discussing Anushilan Samiti implies the party will campaign on Bengal and Bengali Pride using icons like Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay, Satish Chandra Basu, Bipin Chandra Pal, and Rabindranath Tagore, whose sense of nationalism aligns with BJP's and may help it establish a Bengali identity. But will the voters of West Bengal be convinced? We will have to wait until May 2026.
