Pawar Sr supports march but ‘against forcing Tendulkar'

Kolhapur: While the NCP (SP) has declared support to the July 5 protest march against the "imposition of Hindi," the party's chief on Friday said celebrities such as cricketer should not be insisted upon to express their views on making Hindi a must in the Maharashtra school curriculum. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now "Ask Sachin about cricket; don't force him to take a stand on Hindi imposition," he said. Pawar was responding to Raj Thackeray's statement on Thursday that he wanted to see who — especially Marathi artists and sportspersons — turn up and who do not for the protest march against the govt's policy. "I don't know what Raj Thackeray meant by that. Why should one insist that Sachin Tendulkar puts his views across (on the issue of Hindi impoistion)? Ask him about cricket; he is 'badshah', a big name in the world of cricket. I can understand if he is asked to share his views about some aspect of cricket. Don't ask such personalities about issues not related to them. The issue of imposition of Hindi is important for us. Someone seeking their views and saying 'will see who comes for the protest and who does not' is not good," Pawar said. On the march, NCP (SP) state president Jayant Patil said, "We are against imposition of Hindi on primary school students. We have decided to participate in the protest march."

July 5 March Against Hindi "Imposition": Sharad Pawar Led NCP Extends Support

Mumbai: The Sharad Pawar-led NCP (SP) on Friday said it will support the protest march scheduled for July 5 here against the "imposition" of Hindi in the school curriculum in Maharashtra through the National Education Policy 2020. The protest is being organised against the state government's plan to implement a three-language formula under NEP 2020, which includes making Hindi compulsory from Class 1. In a open latter shared on social media, NCP (SP) Maharashtra unit chief Jayant Patil, while announcing decision, said his party stands firmly with the people of Maharashtra on matters of regional interest. "Whenever the interest of Maharashtra is at stake, we stand with Maharashtra. And when the interest of the nation is at stake, we stand with the nation, setting aside political lines. That is the core policy of the NCP (Sharadchandra Pawar)," Patil said. The move has been opposed by educationists, parents, linguists and activists who argue that early education should take place in a child's mother tongue, Patil said. The Marathi-speaking population is not opposed to learning multiple languages, including Hindi, Patil said, but insisted that imposing Hindi at the primary level is unacceptable. "If the three-language policy is being used as a tool to sideline the mother tongue, then the Marathi-speaking community will unitedly resist such moves," he warned. Asserting that the issue concerns linguistic and regional identities, he asked party office-bearers, elected representatives, and workers to participate in large numbers in the July 5 march. The march is aimed at safeguarding the role of Marathi in school education, Patil added.

Today in Politics: PM Modi to meet multi-party delegations; amid reunion buzz, NCP factions to mark foundation day

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will meet members of the multi-party delegations, who had travelled to world capitals to convey India's stand following Operation Sindoor, on Tuesday, sources said. Official sources said the members will be sharing their feedback with the PM, whose government has praised the work of the seven delegations comprising over 50 persons, mostly current MPs. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has already met the delegations and praised their efforts in conveying India's strong stand against Pakistan-sponsored terrorism. Four delegations were led by the ruling alliance, including two BJP MPs, one JD(U) MP and one of Shiv Sena, while three were led by opposition MPs, one each of the Congress, DMK and NCP(SP). NCP foundation day Amid buzz of a possible reunion, the two rival factions of the NCP – led by veteran leader Sharad Pawar and his nephew and Deputy CM Ajit Pawar – will hold separate 'Foundation Day' gatherings in Pune on Tuesday. Despite the reports of a potential reunion between Ajit's ruling NCP and Sharad's Opposition NCP(SP), both sides have insisted there was no such proposal on the table. Frequent meetings between Sharad and Ajit Pawar at public and private events have fuelled speculations about the factions reuniting after a split in the party in July 2023. On Tuesday, while Sharad Pawar will address workers and office-bearers at a function in the morning, Ajit Pawar will participate in a programme in the evening in Pune, the home turf of the Pawar family. According to political observers, party workers are expecting clarity and future roadmaps for their respective factions from the top leadership. Stampede petitions in Karnataka HC Karnataka High Court on Monday said it will hear on Tuesday the petitions of Royal Challengers Bengaluru and DNA Entertainment Pvt Ltd challenging criminal cases against them in the stadium stampede incident. The stampede occurred on June 4 in front of the Chinnaswamy stadium in Bengaluru, where a large number of people thronged to participate in the RCB team's IPL victory celebrations. Eleven people died and 56 were injured in the incident. Meanwhile, CM Siddaramaiah of the Congress government will travel to New Delhi on Tuesday to meet the Congress high command, where he is expected to discuss various developments, including the stampede. Siddaramaiah had on Sunday denied reports that the Congress high command had sought information from him regarding the stampede. CPI(M)'s delegation to J&K During a meeting of its central committee earlier this month, the CPI(M) decided it would send a party delegation led by general secretary M A Baby to Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday as part of its campaign against terror. The other members of the delegation include Lok Sabha MPs Amra Ram, K Radhakrishnan and Su Venkatesan, and Rajya Sabha MPs John Brittas, Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharyya and A A Rahim. The party is also planning to hold a week-long campaign in June against 'terrorism, war mongering and efforts to spread communal hatred' using the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack. – With PTI inputs

Both NCP factions to mark 26th anniversary in Pune

MUMBAI: When the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) turns 26 on June 10, its two rival factions will mark the occasion with two contrasting events – one a show of strength, the other a low-key celebration. Both parties – the NCP led by Ajit Pawar and the NCP (SP) led by his uncle, Sharad Pawar – have chosen Pune as the venue. Most importantly, leaders as well as the rank and file from both factions are hoping to get clarity on whether the two parties will merge, a subject that has fuelled much speculation lately. Ajit Pawar has booked a part of the Balewadi sports complex, where seating arrangements will be made for 15,000 office-bearers. 'It should be seen as a show of strength of the party against the backdrop of the local body elections scheduled in the next few months,' said a senior NCP leader. He said they were expecting 15,000 to 20,000 delegates from across the state. 'The celebrations will start in the morning and conclude with Ajit Pawar's speech,' he said. 'Pune is a central place for people coming from Western Maharashtra, the Konkan, Marathwada and North Maharashtra. Only those coming from Vidarbha will find it inconvenient.' The two NCPs have been at daggers drawn ever since Ajit Pawar walked out of the undivided NCP with 40 MLAs in July 2023, to join the BJP-led Mahayuti government in the state. He was rewarded with the post of deputy chief minister. During the local body elections, the two factions will fight a pitched battle for control over Western Maharashtra, a stronghold of the NCP for decades. In the state assembly elections, Ajit Pawar emerged as the stronger of the two Pawars in the region. For the anniversary celebrations, Sharad Pawar has booked Bal Gandharva Rang Mandir, an auditorium with a capacity of around 1,000. 'Pawar saheb will guide all of us by addressing the gathering,' said Ankush Kakade, spokesperson of the NCP (SP). NCP (SP) leaders said they are anxious to get clarity on whether the two NCP factions will reconcile their differences and reunite. 'The speculation has created confusion among the cadre. We all are hoping the party leadership will clear the air on the anniversary, and guide us on how to plan our poll strategy,' said a senior party functionary. Last year, on the undivided NCP's silver jubilee, the Ajit Pawar-led faction celebrated the occasion at Shanmukhananda Hall in Mumbai, while the Sharad Pawar-led NCP (SP) celebrated it in Ahmednagar.

Oppn questions govt on rural health facilities after woman delivers baby on road in Jalgaon

Pune: A woman's video of delivering a baby on the roadside in Jalgaon district in circulation on social media cast serious posers on medical facilities in rural Maharashtra, giving Opposition an ammo to launch an attack on state govt. Rohini Khadse, the state working president of the women's wing of NCP (SP), said, "Three ministers in this govt are from Jalgaon. Yet, people of the district have to suffer in such a manner, which is quite shameful. It shows that the govt has failed in providing basic healthcare facilities in the rural parts of the state. The govt boasts of starting the Ladki Bahin scheme, but it could not provide an ambulance to one such ladki bahin when she needed it the most. " The widely circulated video was shot a few days ago in Chopda tehsil. According to villagers and NGO workers, the woman was experiencing severe labour pain and needed to be taken to a healthcare facility. Her husband tried to take her to the healthcare facility on his two-wheeler because the ambulance did not reach their house despite repeated calls. The woman could not bear the pain on the way and delivered the baby at the side of the road with the help of local women in the area. Lok Sangharsh Morcha member Pratibha Shinde said, "The woman is from Bormali village. It is quite sad that the health department officials did not send an ambulance to take her to the healthcare facility in an emergency situation. Her husband had to take her on a bike for nearly 8km, and midway, she had to deliver the baby on the road." Shinde said, "The govt has been claiming that they provide all the facilities in rural areas, but this incident has exposed the false claim. It also shows the need for improvement in the healthcare system in the state on a priority basis." The district administration admitted the facts shown in the video and initiated an inquiry. Jalgaon district collector Ayush Prasad said, "This incident is unfortunate. The ambulance was available, and the road to the village was motorable. Such an incident happened because of some mismanagement. Taking serious cognisance of it, we have initiated the inquiry. We are also taking steps to ensure such incidents do not happen in the future.
