Coral reef clean-up collects 5kg underwater waste
BINTULU (July 2): A clean-up programme covering the Patricia Reef Seabed offshore here, led by Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC) and Bintulu Port Authority (BPA), recorded a total of 5kg of underwater waste.
The exercise on Monday, run under the Coral Reef and Reef Ball for Ecosystem Enhancement and Stewardship (COREEFS) 2025, also involved a number of government agencies and non-governmental organisations (NGOs).
Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Port Development Dato Majang Renggi officiated at the programme kick-off at the Marine Police jetty base, which earlier gathered 62 volunteer divers and boat crew members coming for the seabed clean-up works.
'In this era of rapid development, the importance of marine conservation cannot be overstated. Coral reefs are invaluable natural assets, home to thousands of marine species.
'They support our fishing communities, and serve as key eco-tourism attractions as well,' Majang, who is Samalaju assemblyman, said in his speech.
According to him, the COREEFS project aligns with the Post Covid-19 Development Strategy 2030, which prioritises green economy and sustainable development.
'Today's clean-up is more than just symbolic; it's a proactive step towards marine habitat's restoration, scientific research, environmental education and direct community involvement,' he added.
Majang also said advanced technologies such as seabed mapping, the Geographic Information System (GIS), and reef ball structures were being employed, demonstrating Sarawak's forward-thinking approach to conservation.
'Previous successes like the BEACON Project at Similajau National Park back in 2017, and the eco-marine programme at Miri-Sibuti Coral Reef National Park in 2020, set the stage for this impactful initiative.
'Congratulations to all involved, from the dedicated volunteers and professional divers, to strategic partners and organising agencies. Let us continue to cultivate the love for nature and strive for a greener, cleaner, and more resilient Sarawak.'

Photo for illustration purposes only. — Bernama photo MIRI (July 9): The Swift Wildlife Action Team (SWAT) was promptly deployed to Kampung Pandam, Limbang following a report on a crocodile attack yesterday evening, said Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC). In a statement, SFC said the team was deployed to assist with the search and rescue (SAR) operation and carry out follow-up efforts to track and capture the reptile involved. 'Our utmost priority is public safety. Measures are already in place to mitigate risks in the affected area,' said SFC. The corporation dismissed allegations from certain quarters that the state government was indifferent to crocodile-related issues, calling such claims baseless. It stressed SFC has consistently implemented proactive initiatives over the years including crocodile capture operations at identified hotspots, installation of warning signage in high-risk zones, awareness programmes with local communities, and a dedicated hotline for public reports of crocodile sightings. SFC reminded all parties to refrain from politicising the matter, stating that public safety remains a top priority for the state government and that it remains committed to fulfilling its responsibilities. Based on monitoring and habitat surveys, SFC said the crocodile population in Sarawak is currently around 25,000, spread across more than 4,500km of river systems and 40 major river basins. 'This widespread distribution poses significant challenges, especially for communities living or conducting activities near riverbanks,' SFC said. To further enhance response and management efforts, SFC has introduced several key initiatives, which include setting up divisional crocodile task forces to coordinate swift responses to crocodile-related incidents. SFC also launched the Sarawak Croc Watch Mobile App, a real-time platform for the public to report crocodile sightings directly to SFC. 'Additionally, SFC has also issued crocodile hunting and harvesting licences under strict regulations for population control in high-risk areas, based on scientific data as well as establishing Crocodile Removal Zone (CRZ) for targeted removal or relocation of crocodiles,' it said. As a long-term measure to address the overpopulation of crocodiles in Sarawak, SFC is also developing a long-term management plan with an Australian consultant, incorporating scientific approach, systematic monitoring, and community participation. Army sets up board of inquiry to probe death of commando during training
KUANTAN: The army has set up a board of inquiry to investigate the death of one of its commandos during the Seaghost diving exercise in the waters off Kuantan Port yesterday. The Army headquarters public relations cell said the board will conduct a detailed investigation to determine the exact cause of the incident. The statement confirmed the death of Corporal Mohd Haswansir Julnasir, 30, a member of the Special Forces Group (GGK), who was attached to the 22nd Regiment and participating in the Seaghost Series 1/2025 training exercise during the incident. "Haswansir was reported missing while conducting a diving exercise using a closed-circuit breathing apparatus (CCBA) at Dock Port about 12.15pm on July 3. "The army immediately launched a search and rescue operation before his remains were discovered by a navy patrol team around 10am yesterday, some 500m from the site of the incident. His CCBA diving suit and M4 carbine rifle were recovered with him," the statement read. The army said Haswansir's remains were sent to Tengku Ampuan Afzan Hospital here for a post-mortem before being flown to Tawau, Sabah, aboard a Royal Malaysian Air Force C-130 Hercules aircraft from the Kuantan air base at 7.30pm yesterday. "He was laid to rest at the Kampung Gusung Melanta Tesi burial ground on Pulau Bum Bum in Semporna at 2.30pm today," the statement added. The statement described Haswansir as an elite member of the Special Boat Squadron, highly trained in amphibious assault and maritime infiltration operations, which are skills required to maintain elite operational readiness.
