Jadeja hailed for taking India close but Gavaskar rues lack of risk
But he eventually ran out of partners after more than four hours at the crease as India were all out for 170 after tea on a nerve-shredding final day.
Jadeja, who came in at 71-5 and saw India slump to 112-8 at lunch, chose to protect Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj from England's attack by scoring singles to keep the strike and controlling his attacking instincts.
Former batting great Sunil Gavaskar said on Sony Sports that scoring quicker and putting pressure back on England's bowlers might have resulted in "a partnership of 60-70 would have made a difference".
"India never got that (partnership)," he said.
"You could say that Jadeja could have taken the odd chance and not necessarily the aerial route when Joe Root and Shoaib Bashir were bowling. But full marks to him (Jadeja)."
Jadeja hit just four fours and one six in his 181-ball stay before Bashir bowled number 11 Siraj to trigger jubilant England celebrations.
"I'd like to look a little deeper into that whole innings," former batsman Sanjay Manjrekar said on ESPNcricinfo.
"There was one attempt at playing a shot that went for six.
"But I don't think there were too many attempted attacking shots.
"For me, one telling moment was when he got to his fifty and India were still a few runs short.
"You saw the reaction of the dressing room there were people applauding but I don't think there was excitement around and belief that Jadeja would take them through."
India's greatest batsman Sachin Tendulkar lamented: "So near, yet so far."
"Jadeja, Bumrah, & Siraj fought all the way till the end," he posted on X.
"Well tried, Team India. England played well to keep the pressure on and produced the result they desired. Congratulations on a hard-fought win."
England lead the series 2-1 with two to play.

Girelli fires Italy past Norway and into Euro 2025 semis
Italy will play one of holders England or Sweden in the last four next Tuesday after Girelli headed home the decisive goal in the final minute in Geneva. The Italians hadn't reached last four of a Euros since losing the final to Germany in 1997 and will be a tough nut to crack after seeing off Norway, who have two of the women's game's biggest stars in Ada Hegerberg and Caroline Graham Hansen. And moments later Severini hit a weak shot at Norway goalkeeper Cecilie Fiskerstrand after being sent clean through by Caruso's superb first-time pass. And Hegerberg almost made Italy pay in the 37th minute when Thea Bjelde's deflected low cross struck her thigh and dribbled wide in front of an open goal. Girelli finally gave Italy their deserved lead by prodding home Sofia Cantore's mishit shot, but going behind seemed to wake Norway up and as she did in their first Group A match against Switzerland, Hegerberg both won and then shot wide a penalty. The former Ballon d'Or winner made up for her horrendous mistake six minutes later when she pounced on hesitant goalkeeping from Laura Giuliani to poke home the leveller. Both teams traded blows from that point but it looked like extra time was nailed on until Girelli struck at the last, perfectly guiding home Cantore's searching cross and giving Italy a date with one of the tournament favourites in the next round.

Real Madrid's Bellingham set to miss 12 weeks after shoulder surgery
"Our player Jude Bellingham has undergone successful surgery for a recurrent left shoulder dislocation," said Real Madrid in a statement. "Bellingham will now begin a period of rehabilitation prior to his return to recovery work." While Madrid did not specify the expected length of his recovery time, Spanish media have reported it will take around 12 weeks for him to return to action. Bellingham has been struggling with shoulder discomfort after dislocating it in a La Liga match in November 2023, and playing with a brace under his shirt since then. The England midfielder held off on the operation until after Madrid's participation in the Club World Cup this summer, with Xabi Alonso's side reaching the semi-finals. Bellingham is set to miss the La Liga visit to face rivals Atletico Madrid in late September, as well as the club's first two Champions League matches. The 22-year-old midfielder should be back in action by the time Madrid host Barcelona in the first Clasico of the season in late October. "I've got the point where... I'm fed up with the brace, and having to tug on it and having (other) players tug on it, and it rearranging all the time," said Bellingham during the Club World Cup. Sweden flying under Euros radar ahead of England clash, says Asllani
Spain, France and England have dominated headlines in Switzerland but Sweden swept into the last eight with three powerful displays, including a thumping of Germany, on their way to winning Group C with a perfect nine points. "I feel like Sweden are always flying under the radar, I would say," attacking midfielder Asllani told reporters. "And it is something that kind of suits us because obviously we think that we are one of the best teams in the world due to the results we have been doing the last few years from the tournaments. But people rarely speak about us as someone that can win the gold. "We know we can beat any team in the world when we have our best day. We don't think about it too much but I think people should talk about us more." Sweden take on England, who finished second in Group D, in Zurich on Thursday with memories still fresh of a 4-0 defeat to the Lionesses at the last Euros three years ago. But Asllani said that she and her teammates are focussing on two recent draws with the reigning European champions as they hunt a first major honour since winning the first official Euros way back in 1984. "We have incredible belief in one another and the entire team. We do play very intense and physical football and since (coach) Peter (Gerhardsson) took over that has developed," added Asllani.
