Plans for football and rugby stadium go on show

It is hoped the new stadium will be completed in 2027 [Cumberland Council] Plans for a new football and rugby stadium are to go on show for three weeks. If approved, Cumberland Sports Village, in Workington, will have capacity for 3,700 fans and existing football stands will be replaced. Advertisement Work is due to start early next year, subject to planning permission, and completed by late summer 2027. Dave Bowden, spokesman for Cumberland Sports Village, said he looked forward to "making the project a reality". The stadium will also have capacity for 2,700 seated and 1,000 standing fans. The West Stand, the stadium's main structure, will provide seating for up to 1,000 people with wheelchair viewing spaces. The new facility will also include a function suite, executive boxes and a sports bar. The East Stand and the South Stand will be replaced with covered spaces for about 2,000 fans in total. Advertisement The new North Stand Terrace will remain uncovered. A new 3G pitch will also replace the existing turf playing surface. Scaled back plans Plans for the stadium have been in the works for more than five years and have been scaled back from an initial design for 8,000 fans. After the now-defunct Allerdale Borough Council dropped the project, the region missed out on hosting a Rugby League World Cup match because it did not have a suitable stadium. A planning application is expected to be submitted by the end of the month. The plans will be display from Monday until 25 July at Borough Park, Derwent Park and Workington Library.
