UAE launches two scientific journals in rehabilitation, applied psychology
ABU DHABI (WAM)The Zayed Higher Organisation for People of Determination (ZHO), in collaboration with Emirates Scholar Center for Research and Studies, has announced the launch of two new peer-reviewed academic journals: International Journal of Rehabilitation & Disability Studies, and the Emirati Journal of Applied Psychology.This initiative reflects a strategic partnership and a shared vision to advance specialised knowledge in the fields of rehabilitation and mental health, while positioning the UAE as a regional and global hub for innovative scientific output.Both journals are subject to rigorous peer-review processes by expert academic committees, and have been officially indexed in reputable international databases.Since their announcement, the journals have received substantial engagement, with over 134 research submissions. More than 20 full-length scientific papers are slated for publication in the inaugural issues, with an additional 100+ contributions currently under review.The launch builds on previous collaborative efforts between the two institutions, including the development of the multilingual UAE–Russian Psychology Dictionary, the creation of a GPT-based application dedicated to psychological science, and the recent completion of the French edition of the dictionary—now available in four languages.These initiatives have significantly expanded access to scientific resources for researchers and experts in the region and across Europe, fostering cross-cultural academic exchange.To date, the digital platforms for these initiatives have recorded over 5 million views, and the dictionary alone has attracted more than 100,000 visits.Commenting on the announcement, Abdullah Abdulali Al Humaidan, Secretary-General of Zayed Higher Organisation for People of Determination, said, 'Specialised knowledge and scientific research are the foundation for developing inclusive rehabilitation systems. Our partnership with Emirates Scholar is a tangible translation of this vision, creating initiatives that make a real difference in the lives of People of Determination and in society at large.'He added that launching peer-reviewed scientific journals and multilingual academic references reflects the organisation's deep awareness of the role of science in empowering individuals and achieving sustainable, inclusive development.Dr. Fawaz Habbal, Director-General of the Emirates Scholar Center, highlighted that these initiatives directly address urgent societal needs in fields essential to improving quality of life. He encouraged researchers to contribute actively with scientific content that aligns with these forward-looking objectives.
The first editions of both journals will be officially launched during the second edition of the European Arab Medical Congress, to be held from October 9–11, 2025, at the Abu Dhabi Energy Center. The event will be organised by Emirates Scholar in partnership with Zayed Higher Organisation and the European Medical Association, under the theme 'Practical Approaches in Rehabilitation Medicine and Psychology'. The congress will also host the 2025 Psychology Award Ceremony, which honours outstanding research and initiatives enhancing quality of life and promoting sustainable mental health.

15 July 2025 16:10 GENEVA (WAM)The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) warned on Tuesday of rising malnutrition rates among children in the Gaza Strip, confirming that one in every 10 children is currently malnourished, according to data from its clinics and medical points across the a press briefing in Geneva, UNRWA's Director of Communications Juliette Touma said malnutrition rates have increased in Gaza, especially since the siege tightened four months ago, adding that UNRWA health teams have screened over 240,000 boys and girls across the Gaza Strip since January warned that therapeutic supplies to combat malnutrition among children are almost non-existent as UNRWA is facing severe shortages in medicines, nutritional supplies, fuel and hygiene materials, confirming that the agency ran out of food stocks late noted that nearly 60 per cent of essential medicines have depleted from UNRWA's warehouses since Israeli forces banned the agency from bringing in any humanitarian aid, including food and medicines, on March the Israeli aggression on the occupied West Bank, Touma described it as a silent war that continues to escalate in parallel with what is happening in Gaza, particularly amid severe restrictions on freedom of movement, imposed by the Israeli forces, rising poverty and unemployment due to loss of livelihoods. Touma stressed that despite these challenges, UNRWA continues its operations across the occupied Palestinian territory through a 14,000-strong local workforce, delivering essential services, particularly in the fields of healthcare and education, to Palestinian refugees and others in need.

UAE leads life-saving drive to tackle malnutrition in Yemen's Socotra
The UAE has joined forces with the World Health Organisation to lead a campaign to reduce the number of deaths caused by malnutrition on the Yemeni island of Socotra. Field teams from the UAE and the WHO have carried out assessments in the first phase of a drive aimed at bolstering health systems and improving patient care. Health workers have completed the first of four visits over the course of a year, as part of a mission to reduce the malnutrition death rate by up to 20 per cent within the next two to five years. The initiative is being carried out with the support of the Yemen's Ministry of Public Health and Population, state news agency Wam reported on Monday. The baseline assessment covered 38 villages across 29 subdistricts of Socotra, which has an estimated population of 60,000. Data was collected from 4,214 households, with field teams interviewing more than 900 care providers and taking anthropometric measurements from children and mothers. Such measurements are typically used to assess the height and weight of infants and adults. That data is an important indicator of nutrition and the risk of disease. The findings will be used to compile a report that will detail the maternal and child health and nutrition status of the community. It will also examine the readiness of healthcare sites to respond to emergency situations and meet the needs of patients. Future stages of the initiative will include the distribution of medical goods and other supplies, work by technical experts and service providers, and the launch of training programmes and community awareness campaigns. Remote island of global significance Socotra is part of one of the most isolated islands in the world. It is about 340km south-west of Yemen. While remote and small, it is known for its centuries-old, umbrella-shaped dragon blood trees and has been described as the Galapagos of the Indian Ocean because of its biodiversity. The Socotra Archipelago – made up of six islands, including its largest, Socotra – received Unesco World Heritage Site status in 2008 in recognition of its biodiversity and high number of endemic species. Socotra has endured a number of challenges in recent years, including two cyclones in 2015. The UAE provided $110 million in humanitarian aid to the people of Socotra from 2015 to 2021, offering assistance to its communities and helping to lay foundations for the future. The aid was delivered by organisations including the Emirates Red Crescent, the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development, the Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan Foundation, the Sheikh Sultan bin Khalifa Al Nahyan Humanitarian and Scientific Foundation, and the Abu Dhabi Waste Management Centre. Key investment restored Socotra's airport and paid for the construction of two solar power stations, the establishment of four power plants and the installation of power generators in remote villages.

UAE delegation visits Netherlands, Belgium to explore cooperation in R&D, advanced technologies
