Dog Jumps Into Pond To Get Ball—Then Realizes Something Got There First
Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content.
The internet has been baffled by a dog trying to play fetch in the water, only to return with more than he anticipated.
A video by TikTok user @kanem10 has gone viral since being posted on July 26, racking up more than 1.2 million likes and a whopping 10.7 million views in a matter of days.
At first, the video appears to be a simple clip of Ottis the dog swimming in a pond, fetching a ball his owner has thrown.
But, as words over the video—"How does this happen?!"—suggests, things suddenly get very strange.
As Ottis swims to the ball to grab it, a large fish appears from under the water and tries to swallow it.
Ottis ignores the fish, identified by his owner as a bass, and grabs the ball. But as he swims back, the fish isn't letting go—and he returns to the shallow water with both the ball and the fish.
And even when Ottis drops the ball, the fish keeps the ball in its mouth, and swims lazily backwards.
Ottis's owner wrote in the caption: "Just a normal day of fetch until a bass had the audacity to steal this ball. Don't think I'll ever see that again!"
Bass are both freshwater and marine fish species found across the world, and are prized by anglers for their large size—and willingness to put up a fight, according to A-Z Animals.
They eat everything from insects and plankton to fish, frogs and birds, and Largemouth bass regularly eat prey up to 50 percent of their size, and sometimes up to 70 percent of their size.
TikTok users loved the bizarre video, with one commenter summing it up: "Dog is confused, fish is confused, human is confused. Video is a masterpiece."
"Fish biting everything but my lure," one person despaired, as another joked Ottis is "gonna get a ticket for fishing without a license."
One pointed out: "Look how gentle he's holding the ball so he doesn't hurt the fishy," another agreeing: "You could see the confusion where he wants his ball, but doesn't want to hurt the fish," calling Ottis a "gentle soul."
And another joked: "I'm a vet and this is actually because the fish thinks he's a dog."
Newsweek has contacted @adventuresof_ottis via TikTok for comment on this story.
Ottis fetches the ball, which has a bass attached to it.

And the handy spray bottle is even great for taking on the go and treating stains as they happen (and laundering later)! A refillable plug-in fly trap designed with a light to lure in flying insects in your home — it's especially great for fruit flies and gnats — and trap them, so you don't have to try to get snatch them out of the air one by one. That's right, you will NOT have to reapply before your evening plans. The formula is chock-full of chemical exfoliants (AHA, BHA, and PHA), which can help prevent ingrown hairs and bumps, plus brightening ingredients like niacinamide and licorice extract which can help banish dark spots from previous ingrowns. A Yonanas fruit soft-serve maker capable of transforming any frozen fruit into an ice cream–like treat with ease. Also easy? All the removable parts are dishwasher-safe for easy cleanup, too. This is a great option for people with dietary restrictions or anyone who LOVES super fruity desserts — I'll take a strawberry-banana ice cream, please! AquaGuard, a pre-swim hair cream designed to protect your tresses from damaging chlorine (aka less dryness, fewer tangles, no turning green, and no icky chlorine smell!) — just dampen your hair, apply the cream, and dive in! Now you can play "mermaids" all you want without sacrificing your hair. A set of internet-famous Mellanni sheets made of a super-soft and moisture-wicking microfiber fabric that hundreds of thousands of 5-star reviewers (wow!) love for being cozy and sleeping surprisingly cool, even at peak summer temperatures — and at an unbeatable price! You just might want to ditch your expensive sheets for these babies after the first night. And a cooling blanket designed with fibers that can help absorb body heat so you can relax at home (especially when the AC doesn't seem to quite be enough!) in a bit more comfort. One side is 100% cotton, and the other side is a specially designed ~Arc-Chill~ fabric — when you sit on it, you'll be surprised how cool it feels to the touch! And! A set of two cooling pillowcases made with similar cooling fibers so you don't have to keep flipping your pillow to the cool side dozens of times on those most scorching nights — these are always the cool side. A pair of metatarsal pads to add some extra cushion to your high heels before that big event you have coming up. They're the thickness of four stacked credit cards to provide comfort for the balls of your feet without changing the fit of your shoe, have adhesive backing so they won't slip and slide while you're on the dance floor, and can even absorb sweat. One/Size's On 'Til Dawn waterproof setting spray, which gives a matte finish and all-day hold to your makeup look, whether you're dripping sweat or even getting a refreshing dip in the pool! An oscillating tower fan one reviewer nicknamed "THE GLACIER" *and* called "better than your air conditioner." (I'm immediately sold.) It has six speeds — up to 24 feet per second velocity — and three modes, and reviewers agree that it's super quiet. Installing a window air conditioner can be you have to do is plug this in! Or if you are actually in need of some true AC, a portable Black & Decker air conditioner (that also works as a dehumidifier and fan) with all the power and cooling you need, without any permanent changes — you can even move it easily from room to room as needed. And reviewers note it's much cheaper than running central air! Gold Bond Friction Defense, an easy-to-apply stick (just like deodorant!) to reduce friction and moisturize skin wherever you deal with painful chafing when your skin rubs together, especially when the mercury rises. It's unscented and invisible too! Sol de Janeiro Brazilian Bum Bum Cream, a cult-favorite body cream you're going to want to slather all over your body, thanks to the deep hydration (cupuaçu butter, coconut oil, and açai oil!) and temporary skin-tightening (caffeine!) it provides, plus a fragrance with notes of salted caramel and vanilla that reviewers L O V E. A roll-on sunscreen sponge to help you do what you need to do this summer: reapply your sunscreen every two hours. But with this handy lil' guy, you can just sponge it right on, and it'll keep your hands mess-free! Idk about you, but I hate that greasy, sunscreen-y feeling on my hands when I'm at the beach. And if you don't get those, or reapply as often as they suggest, a Burt's Bees sunburn soother, so you have it on hand before you get sunburned. Even when we do our best, sometimes it happens! This reviewer-lauded formulation has a blend of aloe and coconut oil for deeply moisturizing relief that *doesn't* feel greasy. A bag of Miracle-Gro water-storing crystals that'll help your plants survive the hottest heatwaves August has up its sleeve — or your upcoming long vacation. These babies solve both over- *and* underwatering struggles so your plants thrive — even when your plants are particularly parched. Just mix in with your soil, and the crystals absorb water now and slowly release over time. It works for both indoor and outdoor plants, too! The Scumbug, an absorbent sponge that floats along the surface of your pool or hot tub and absorbs oil, slime, sunscreen residue, and any other buildup that's hanging out and leaving that weird, greasy shine on your water surface. When you see the color change, just wring it out, rinse, and it's ready to use again! A pair of seamless Nippies silicone pasties to solve any wardrobe dilemmas that can't be solved with any of your current bras — or those times you don't feel like wearing a bra at all but also want a little coverage. Not only will these look invisible under clothes, but the adhesive stays *put* through sweating and activity, so you can wear 'em with confidence. A racerback bodysuit in a second skin–like fabric (called Smoke Cloud) reviewers compare to Skims and love for being buttery soft and *not* see-through. And once you fall in love with this sleeveless style, don't worry; it comes in tons of sleeve lengths and necklines! A Trtl travel pillow, which is a must for your upcoming multi-hour flights this summer, so you're actually rested when you get to your destination. Why waste precious carry-on space with bulky neck pillows when reviewers like this better?! It folds up thin and compact, and when you're ready to use it, just wrap it around your neck — underneath the soft fleece is an internal support structure designed to keep your head in a comfy position for sleeping upright. SweatBlock antiperspirant wipes designed to reduce excess sweating for *up to seven days*(!!). Just swipe on before bed, and kiss those pit stains that ruin your favorite shirts goodbye. They're designed to be used for under the arms, but reviewers use them elsewhere too! A lightweight Cosrx SPF 50+ sunscreen (the same brand as the TikTok-viral snail mucin!) for anyone who isn't always the best at applying sunscreen (every! day!). This sebum-balancing formula has a moisturizer-like texture, contains skincare ingredients like cacao and vitamin E, feels breathable on the skin, leaves a semi-matte finish, and (reviewers agree!) it doesn't have a white cast, so applying it will feel like less of a chore. A TikTok-approved, compact Levoit air purifier with a true HEPA filter that's not only great for daily dust particles and pollen, but can really come in handy during wildfire season in the summertime too! A ~Fasta Pasta~ cooker to make perfectly al dente pasta right in the microwave — no turning on your stove and heating up your entire kitchen on days where every degree counts. Plus, no more waiting for the pot to boil either! Oxo's compact Cold Brew Rapid Brewer capable of making concentrated coffee in minutes (hot in two minutes, iced in just five) — without any electricity, paper filters, or magic. Just dilute however you'd like with water or milk and enjoy! You can even use the results on ice cream (affogatos are delicious) or in a delicious coffee cocktail. Or a HyperChiller that'll cool hot drinks by up to 130° in 60 seconds with zero dilution. So you can brew hot coffee, and then sixty seconds later, have a perfect iced drink ready to go! And a portable Chill-O-Matic instant beverage cooler perfect for anyone who simply cannot stand a lukewarm canned bevvie. Just pop in some ice and your 12-ounce can, and the cooler will spin the can, taking your seltzer, soda, or brewski to perfectly *crispy* in just! one! minute!

29 Women Share Their Life-Saving Dating Safety Tips
I do not think that, in any way, shape, or form, it's an exaggeration to say dating as a woman in 2025 is hell. All that being said, I asked women of the BuzzFeed Community to share the dating safety tips they swear by. From simple things that just might save your life to routines that make going on dates even a little less nerve-wracking, here are 29 pieces of advice they shared: "Always let a friend know where you are going and who you're with. Tell someone the guy's name and phone number before the date, his car info when he picks you up, where he's taking you and when you arrive, when you leave, and when you get home. A couple of times in my dating years, this practice helped me and helped my friends out of uncomfortable/dangerous situations." "Always meet in a public place and remember that if they make you uncomfortable, don't stay silent. Make a scene so people are aware. They most likely enjoy the power play in making you feel awkward, so flip the situation and publicly shame them!" "I always buy my own drink (cocktail, coffee, etc.). With that, I can leave whenever I want to, whether it is because we aren't vibing or it starts to feel unsafe. Because I bought my own drink, I'm under no pressure to stay 'because they bought me a drink.'" "I now always avoid suggesting places that I go to frequently for the first couple of dates. I had a bad first date at one of my favorite coffee places, and then the guy showed up there two times after that date, possibly to see if I was around. My friend worked there and told me about it." "Always carry cash, so he can't grab your last name off the card and track you down." "Look up the phone number for the place you're going and save it in your phone beforehand. If your date is extra sketchy and you're not comfortable trying to flag down a staff member in front of them, you can go to the bathroom and call from there for assistance." "I work as a bartender, and there was a girl who showed up early for a date and told us that if she ordered a Manhattan, then she was uncomfortable. I've heard of 'angel shots' before, but think this is better, especially if it's in earshot of the date." "Instead of using a code phrase or word that someone else might be able to catch on to, my friends and I add three exclamation marks to our text if we need an out or are getting bad vibes on a date. For example, a text would say something like, 'Having a great time!!!' We don't usually text like this, so it's a red flag if we do, and likely wouldn't alert the person we were out with if they saw." "I recently saw a TikTok where a girl explained that if you live in an apartment complex and feel like someone is following you home, you shouldn't turn the lights on right away when you get inside. If you do, it can tip them off as to which exact unit you live in, because that window will suddenly light up. Instead, wait a little bit, and then turn it on." "Before you leave for a date, leave your apartment lights on. Whether they're driving you home, you're taking a rideshare service, or you're afraid they might follow you, it prevents other people from figuring out which apartment you live in if they wait around outside afterward to see you turn on the lights. If they're able to see the door you walk up to, it'll make them think there's someone else, like a roommate or family member, home as well." "Try out a date that forces both of you to interact with others, such as karaoke. That way, if the other person starts getting weird, you'll have a whole room full of new friends who can help out." "If you're exchanging your social media with someone instead of your phone number, give them a backup account and block them on your main account. That way if things go south, they can't find your main account and use it to contact your family or friends who may follow you on it." "Take a dummy purse with you that you don't care about and keep your ID, card, phone, and keys on your person. If you have to bail, ask your date to 'watch your purse' and go. It will buy you a few extra minutes, and losing a thrifted bag with a lip balm in it is no big loss." "On first dates, don't go for a long dinner. Opt for something short, like grabbing a coffee at a cafe. If you like the person, you can extend it into a meal. Another one I like is mini golf — if you don't like the person, once the round ends, you are free to leave." "Get a 'Flare Bracelet'. The bracelet is cute and has a small, discreet button on the side. Press it once, and it will trigger a fake phone call from a script you selected to give you an excuse to leave. Press it twice, and it notifies the contacts you've selected of your location and that you're in trouble. Press it three times, it calls the cops and gives them your location (which is an optional feature)." —AnonymousIf you, like me, were today years old when you learned that Flare Bracelets exist, allow me to be the first to tell you that they also come disguised as scrunchies, athletic bands, keychains, and initial necklaces to keep you safe and stylish. "Trust your instincts and get out if you don't feel safe or if you sense something is 'off.' It just might save your life. One time, I went on a date with someone, and they were constantly looking across the room. I thought they were looking at the clock, which was weird, and I took it as an offense. I decided to get up and leave, but I realized soon after I got up that he was staring at a guy sitting in the booth across from us. He was a big, muscular guy with just an iced tea. He'd been sitting there for the whole date and walked in maybe five minutes after we did." "If you're meeting someone from an app, I recommend having at least a 20- to 30-minute phone call first. It gives you far more information than texting back and forth on a dating app does. If something feels off, it's way easier to get off of a phone call than an in-person date, when you might be feeling more nervous or distracted." "For a first date, I always meet them at a public place. After the date is over and I am leaving to go home, I deliberately turn the wrong way. It takes longer, but at least I can tell if I am being followed or not." "Do not let them push you into meeting them at their house the first, second, or whatever time, until you are comfortable. I've had way too many guys refuse to meet at a public place for the first meeting. That's an instant red flag and block. It's a simple request, and if they can't respect my wishes to meet in public, then they definitely won't be respectful of me down the road on other things." "I insist on driving myself and park in a well-lit and populated area. I typically try for a daytime date on the weekend, where restaurants and coffee shops are busy, and it's still plenty light outside. I also avoid more than one alcoholic drink and never leave my beverage alone (like if I go to the restroom). " "Google the person's phone number, look them up on LinkedIn to confirm location, age, and identity. Check their social media to see how old their photos are. Do a lunch or coffee date and see how a guy reacts — if he is bitter or wants to only go to a bar, you have your answer." "If you're getting dropped off at home by your date or a cab/Uber/taxi/Lyft, tell them you're staying with or getting dropped off at a friend's house. That way, they won't think you're going home to an empty place and will believe — if anything should happen — that someone is expecting you and will notice your absence immediately." "Remember that it's OK to have firm boundaries and to say no to things, even if you're interested in someone. A big part of dating is putting yourself out there, but that doesn't mean you have to sacrifice things that make you feel safe or comfortable for the sake of another person's opinion." "Always meet at a public place, and buy something with one of your cards while you're there. Should anything happen, your bank history will give an idea of where you were. Places with cameras are even better so they can match up time stamps with whomever you met, if it goes bad." "I always, ALWAYS ask for a person's last name if we met on a dating app. If someone isn't willing to tell me, I won't go on the date. In case the worst should happen — I at least have the full name of the person. Also, I can't tell you how many people I have met on dating apps that want to either meet at my home or theirs before meeting in public — also an automatic NO. I watch too much true crime to do that." "I have a recording of a guy friend pretending to be my dad having a conversation with me on the phone. I play it when I feel unsafe in a car like Uber or any other uncomfortable dating situation so the other person 'knows' I have someone expecting me. It plays a ring tone three times and has pauses in between for me to respond to sound as realistic as possible." "Do not ever, ever, EVER!!!!! leave your drink unattended. Even at my favorite bar, when I go to the bathroom, I either finish my drink or pass it to the bartender or barback, and they keep it back there, out of the reach of others, until I come back. I don't give a fuck if it makes me look 'paranoid' or if they give me the side eye. You've gotta stay safe." "If your date appears to be standing you up and a 'nice person' just happens to be nearby and wants to 'save your night' or strikes up conversation about being stood up, never fall for it. Some people do this so they appear to be the good guy even if they aren't, and some do this to make it easier to play on your emotions. Get out of there." And finally, "Whether this is your first time ever on a date or you're a seasoned pro at this, don't overestimate your abilities. You may think that you're able to scan out every scenario and handle every issue that comes your way, but it's better to be safe than sorry." Do you have a first date safety tip you swear by? If so, tell us about it in the comments below or via this completely anonymous form.
