The Pokémon Company has announced that Pokémon Legends: Z-A will officially launch on October 16 for Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2.
Pre-orders for the next major Pokémon game begin on June 5, and it's been confirmed that players who purchase either a digital or physical version on the Switch can upgrade their copy to the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition via a $10 upgrade pack on the Nintendo eShop and My Nintendo Store.
It might be worth investing in the Switch 2 Edition as The Pokémon Company has also revealed in a social media post that the version will "offer improved graphics and frame rates", but there's no new trailer for us to compare to the Switch version just yet.
In addition, players who pre-order Legends: Z-A through the Pokémon Center in the US, UK, and Canada will receive a random, exclusive Pokémon Sitting Cuties plush featuring Chikorita, Tepig, or Totodile.
According to Nintendo, those who pre-order a version of the game from My Nintendo Store will receive a Partner Pokémon figurine as a bonus item, and Mega Evolution, Trainer, and Champion's Choice bundles will also be available."
We've also received brand new cover art for the game, along with an official blurb, which reads: "Pokémon Legends: Z-A is a new frontier for the Pokémon video game series, blending an RPG story unfolding in a single city with action elements and a real-time battle system unlike anything seen before in the franchise.
"Trainers can look forward to the beginning of a new adventure in Lumiose City — one woven by people and Pokémon together!"
Pokémon fans won't have to wait long for another look at the game because the next Pokémon Presents livestream will air this summer on July 22.
The Nintendo Switch 2 launches next week on June 5 for $449.99 / £395.99, and $499.99 / £429.99 for the official Mario Kart World bundle, which comes with a digital copy of the game.
UK pre-orders and US pre-orders are now live. If you missed out on securing a pre-order, GameStop and Best Buy have announced that they will be restocking Switch 2 units in-store and online during the console's launch.

'The arc for the second season is very exciting': Ballard star explains why Prime Video should renew the Bosch spin-off

I want it, you want it, we all want it, but as it stands, there's no news confirming Ballard season 2. The Bosch: Legacy spinoff has had astonishing success on Prime Video during its first week of release, scoring the elusive 100% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes. These days, though, even that doesn't guarantee a future. Ballard, which follows LAPD detective Renée Ballard (Maggie Q) as she oversees a cold case in a new department, remains the most streamed new TV show on the platform at the time of writing, with positive critical reviews flying in thick and fast. Even to someone who knows very little about how the industry works, there's clearly more than enough evidence to commission new episodes. But according to Maggie Q, there's just as much chance that we could never see Ballard again if a second season isn't green lit. The biggest shame if the new series quits while it's ahead? We'll never get to see the 'very exciting' season 2 arc that's been teased by Q herself. Ballard season 2 isn't guaranteed to be renewed by Prime Video, but a 'very exciting' arc would make a cancelation devastating Spoilers for Ballard season 1 finale ahead. 'I have no sense,' Q told The Hollywood Reporter about a potential Ballard season 2. 'This industry is not what it was before. It's barely recognizable to me, and shows are so expendable. They can throw out a show in two seconds, and it doesn't make a ton of difference that whole worlds and livelihoods are at stake. Studios always have options. But we have a writers room, and they've been writing away. 'The arc for the second season is very exciting,' she confirms. 'But I've had writers room hired before and then gotten cancelled. So everyone's like, 'Maggie, of course!' I'm like, 'No, no, no.' There is no 'of course.' I am not a negative person at all. I'm a very positive person, but I'm a realist.' Let's recap what we know. Season 1 left off with the unexpected reveal that Councilman Jake Pearlman's (Noah Bean) own father, Gary Pearlman (Kevin Dunn) murdered his own daughter over an alleged confrontation about his marital affair. Robert Olivas (Ricardo Chavira) was also exposed as being a dirty cop alongside being a generally terrible human (bear in mind the earlier assault accusations), but when he's also killed off, Ballard is arrested for it. We've not seen how Olivas died, but we did see Ballard draw her gun on him in the final moments of their confrontation. If season 2 never gets off the ground, Ballard is essentially stuck in jail, for possibly no good reason, for the rest of her fictional life. Not only this, but Ballard has already defied the typical crime drama stereotype by blending the personal and professional in an entirely new way, so it would be an extra shame to lose something that's bringing us something fresh. As far as I'm concerned, Prime Video owes it to the franchise, fans and the undoubtedly the strongest Bosch spinoff so far to give over some answers. Prime Video confirms Invincible season 5 is in the works, but I'm more intrigued about who'll be voiced by Matthew Rhys in the Amazon TV show's fourth season

Amazon has renewed Invincible for a fifth season The highly-rated animated show's fourth entry will arrive sometime in 2026 Matthew Rhys has also joined the Prime Video series' voice cast for season 4 Amazon has revealed Invincible has been renewed for a fifth season. The announcement, which was made on the adult animated show's social media channels yesterday (July 17), confirms Invincible season 4 won't be its final entry. Considering how popular the critically-acclaimed Prime Video series is, that's no great surprise, but it's nonetheless pleasing to hear that Mark Grayson's story will continue on one of the world's best streaming services. Interestingly, Amazon also revealed that the show's cast had already completed recording their lines for its fifth season. It's likely, then, that Invincible season 5 could be ready to go in 2027 and maintain Prime Video's recently established plan to release new seasons annually: Invincible season 2 part 1 aired in late 2023, Invincible season 2 part 2 launched in early 2025, and its third and most recent season released earlier this year. Season 4 is set to arrive in 2026, too, so there's no reason to suspect the show's fifth installment won't arrive a year after that. Which character might be voiced by Matthew Rhys in Invincible season 4? Invincible's latest renewal and the completion of voice work on season 5 weren't the only announcements made in the above video. Indeed, Amazon also revealed that Matthew Rhys (The Americans, Perry Mason) had joined the voice cast for one of the best Prime Video shows' fourth chapter. Understandably, Rhys' role is being kept under wraps, but that doesn't mean we can't guess which character he'll portray. After all, there are plenty of candidates in the series' graphic novel namesake who've yet to show up in its animated adaptation. So, who could Rhys be voicing? Grand Regent Thragg is a possibility but, as much as I like Rhys as an actor, I'm not sure he has the gravitas to play the Viltrum Empire's commander-in-chief. J.K. Simmons, who plays Omni-Man, and Jeffrey Dean Morgan, who voices Conquest, have proven that actors with deeper voices are best suited to portray Viltrumites, so I don't think Rhys is the right fit for Thragg. If he plays a villain, he might be better hamming it up as someone like Dinosaurus – real name David Anders – who's something of an superhuman eco-terrorist and, as his name implies, a formidable shape-shifting humanoid reptile when he's in his dino-form. Dinosaurus is a dangerous albeit silly character, so Rhys might be the perfect fit to play him. On the more heroic front, Rhys may be the ideal actor for someone like Space Racer or Tech Jacket. We've briefly seen these superpowered beings in past seasons of Invincible, but neither character has uttered a word yet. It's possible, then, that Rhys has been tapped to voice one of them. The story of Paramore's debut album and how it forced the pop-punk scene to take a long, hard look at itself

When Paramore were touring their debut album, fans assumed that the pop-punk upstarts from Tennessee were straight edge because of the 'X' they had written on their hands. The truth was that each band member had been marked by venue staff because they were too young to drink. And so began the career of a band who've been forced to bat off rumours, half-truths and not-at-all-truths ever since, usually cast in the direction of singer and de facto band leader Hayley Williams for having the temerity to be a woman fronting an emo band. These days, Williams is long-established as a totemic figure in alternative-pop and melodic, genre-fluid rock, but she was still finding her feet back in 2005 when Paramore – at that point Williams and guitarist Josh Farro and his drummer brother Zak and bassist Jeremy Davis – released their debut album All We Know Is Falling, which turns 20 this week. The album is not one of their best. In fact, as already covered in Louder's ranking of Paramore records, it's probably their worst. But it remains a notable release both for introducing one of the 21st century's most enduring rock bands and capturing the giddy essence of '00s pop-punk. It's a record that came together in a period when Paramore were still working out what and who they were. Williams had originally been signed to Atlantic Records as a solo artist but fought against the label's plans to turn her into a saccharine pop star, declaring she wanted to form a rock band instead. They'd only been together a matter of months when work on All We Are Is Falling began. It's not exactly an era that Williams looks back on fondly. It didn't take long for the singer to realise what she was up against. Go searching for any interview from the era and there will be a question like the one that opens an interview from long-defunct music and film site The Trades: 'Hayley, is it any more difficult being a girl on the Warped tour?'. At the time, Williams was happy to declare something along the lines of 'No, it's not, everything is great', but looking back years later, she opened up on the rampant misogyny encountered by her 18-year-old self. 'I did not know how toxic that world could be,' she told Vulture a few years ago. 'The pop-punk and emo scene in the early 2000s. It was brutally misogynistic,' she continued. 'A lot of internalised sexism, and even when you were lucky enough to meet other bands who were kind and respectful, there was other shit that wasn't. And I was really feisty. We got offered Warped tour, and there was a caveat: 'It's a stage called the Shiragirl Stage. It's all female.' I was pissed! I wanted to qualify for a real stage. When I've been offered female opportunities, it feels like a backhanded compliment. But people sometimes think that's anti-feminist, that I don't wanna be grouped in with the girls. As a 16-year-old who had dreams of playing with the big boys, it felt like we were being slighted. That summer we went out, and I'll never forget [it]. We played in Florida, and the stage was a truck that had a flatbed on it. It was so flimsy it would shake and fall apart. There might have been one other female in a band [on tour], and people were gawking. I don't think in a pervy way. They were confused, like, 'What's in this for me? What's she singing about? I'm a guy — how do I relate?' Whilst All We Know Is Falling hardly set the world alight at the time of release, the success of its 2007 follow-up Riot!, which went to Number 15 in the US Billboard chart, belatedly shone a light on it. It would eventually be certified Gold in 2014, nine years after its release. By that point, the tumultuous world of Paramore had thrown up more hurdles for Williams to navigate with disgruntled ex-bandmates writing mean-spirited blogs criticising how the band was run and, erm, also saying that some of Williams' lyrics were 'ungodly'. Internal turmoil was never far away from Paramore. But Williams persisted, and there was a feeling of hard-won triumph when she posted a handwritten note ahead of Paramore's headline performance at When We Were Young festival in Las Vegas in 2022. The event described itself as 'an epic line-up of emo and rock bands from the past two decades' and ahead of the show, Williams was in an understandably reflective mood with regards to how hard she'd fought to be accepted in a scene in which Paramore were now at the top table. 'To grow up in this scene was not a simple thing,' Willams wrote on Instagram. 'To be celebrating it (and to be celebrated by it) is not a simple thing. Nothing about this life – for you, me, or anyone – is simple… We fell in love with this subset of post-punk and hardcore likely because nothing else moved us. We didn't fit in other places. To be a young girl in love with this scene was to have the hope that I might find my own way to belong. It took years to find that belonging. It's taken a lot of unlearning. A lot of untangling knots I didn't even know were there. What I did know was that for every 'Take off your top!' or snarky punkzine review… For every dramatic headline pinned on my name, or any season of self-doubt… No one was going to define Paramore but Paramore.' Continuing, she said, 'Nearly 20 years later, we find ourselves a pillar of the very scene that threatened to reject us. And me… Fuck the ones who doubted!' Who knows if Hayley Williams would've kept at it if someone had handed her a list of every of fall-out and controversy coming Paramore's way back in 2005. But as All We Know Is Falling turns 20, she's well within her rights to feel like she won the battle. For that reason alone, it's a debut worth celebrating. Solve the daily Crossword
