Europe highlights plastic pollution at OOC Korea

Korea Herald06-05-2025
Europe highlighted ways to tackle marine plastic pollution at the 10th edition of Our Ocean Conference held in Busan, South Korea.
Under the theme 'Our Ocean, Our Action,' the conference brought together more than 2,600 ocean leaders from over 100 countries, resulting in 277 global pledges totaling $9.1 billion, according to Korea's Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries.
Speaking at the conference, Charlina Vitcheva, director-general for maritime affairs and fisheries at the European Commission, underscored the European Union's commitment to combat plastic pollution.
'The EU will remain firmly committed to finding a global solution to address plastic pollution,' Vitcheva said.
'A global plastics treaty is needed more than ever. If business as usual continues, plastic production will triple by 2060,' said Vitcheva, echoing warnings by the OECD that increasing plastic use — particularly in short-lived products — could drive a sharp rise in pollution unless urgent action is taken on reducing demand, improving durability and enhancing recycling.
The UN Environment Program estimates that 19 to 23 million metric tons of plastic waste currently enter aquatic ecosystems annually, threatening ecosystems, biodiversity and human livelihoods.
South Korea has pledged 3.7 trillion won ($2.7 billion) to advance its Korea Blue Action Plan, part of a broader international effort to promote ocean sustainability. The plan outlines 76 national commitments to preserve marine ecosystems and promote sustainable development, said the ministry.
This year's conference welcomed a delegation of 11 representatives from Germany, Greece, Ireland and other EU Member States to facilitate the maritime agenda and outreach activities for marine environmental protection.
According to the EU delegation in Korea, Busan City forged meaningful and tangible cooperation with the EU, recognizing its role and identity as a global ocean city.
Notably, a used fishing net recycling campaign was also held on April 28 as part of these efforts.
Despite the mounting global crisis, there are signs of progress, Vitcheva said, highlighting that marine litter on EU coastlines has dropped by nearly one-third, attributing the success to concerted efforts by governments, civil society and citizens, driven by the EU's Marine Strategy Framework Directive.
The EU delegation in Korea also stressed growing partnership with Korea under the EU-Korea Green Partnership, launched in 2023.
As part of the partnership, the EU delegation hosted a side event titled 'How the Circular Economy Will End Marine Plastic Pollution: A Joint Effort of Ambitious Policies and Innovative Businesses.'
The seminar convened global policymakers, industry leaders and civil society representatives to explore innovative solutions rooted in circular economy principles aimed at ending marine plastic pollution.
'We have the Green Partnership with Korea since 2023, and its key elements embrace cooperation towards developing new circular economy models, which are strategic in tackling global marine plastic pollution issues,' said EU Ambassador to Korea Maria Castillo Fernandez.
'We need to align our approaches to create a supportive framework for transformative innovation,' she said.
Meanwhile, Netherlands Ambassador to Korea Peter van der Vliet called for upstream solutions.
'It starts with smarter design, reuse systems and business models that reduce the burden on nature,' van der Vliet said, urging bold international policy to nurture innovation.

Lee Jae Myung to send special envoys to key partner countries

President Lee Jae Myung has stacked up special envoys to be dispatched to the European Union, France, the UK and India starting next week. According to the presidential office Sunday, South Korean delegations led by the newly appointed special envoys would travel to the EU and the three countries from Monday to communicate the Lee administration's agenda. Yoon Yeo-jun, a former environment minister who helped steer the Lee presidential campaign, has been picked as the special envoy to the EU. Kang Kum-sil, who was the first woman to serve as the country's justice minister, will lead the delegation to France. Heading to the UK as special envoy is Democratic Party of Korea Rep. Choo Mi-ae, another former justice minister. Former Prime Minister Kim Boo-kyum has been announced as special envoy to India. The delegation to the EU will visit Belgium, where the EU has its headquarters, to talk about ways for expanding its strategic partnership with South Korea, the presidential office said. In France, the delegation will discuss boosting exchanges between the two countries across sectors such as artificial intelligence, space technology and defense industry, according to the presidential office. The delegation to the UK will address bilateral cooperation on global challenges such as climate change, while in India, talks will touch on marking the upcoming 10th anniversary of diplomatic ties, the presidential office said. The presidential office added further announcements that special envoys to other key countries would be made as soon as negotiations with their counterparts are completed.

Zelensky urges more investment in defence against Russian attacks

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky urged politicians and businesses in Rome on Thursday to boost defence investments in the face of intensified attacks on his country by Russia. Zelensky was speaking at the start of the two-day Ukraine Recovery Conference, aimed at mobilising support and investment for his nation as it enters the fourth year since Moscow's 2022 invasion. "This is what we must focus on first -- we must stop Russian drones and missiles. This means more air defence supplies and investments in interceptor drones, air defence systems, and missiles," Zelensky said. "I urge all our partners -- increase your investments. When Russia increases its attacks, we cannot have a shortage of funding." Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said commitments worth a total of around 10 billion euros ($12 billion) would be made, without giving details. The gathering -- the fourth such annual event since Russia's February 2022 invasion -- took place as Russia hammered Ukraine's capital with its second large-scale drone and missile barrage in as many nights, killing at least two people. Zelensky said Russian President Vladimir Putin wanted "our people to suffer, to flee Ukraine and for homes, schools, for life itself to be destroyed". He urged the estimated 2,000 companies and around 30 countries represented in Rome to help Ukraine and themselves. "Ukraine has some of the world's most advanced drone technologies for both offence and defence. We are ready to share this expertise," he said. The European Union said Thursday it had identified 2.3 billion euros ($2.7 billion) to aid the reconstruction of Ukraine, and also announced a new equity fund to boost private investments. The bloc has stepped up its support for the war-torn country since US President Donald Trump's return to office in January raised questions about Washington's commitment to Kyiv. Meloni said rebuilding Ukraine would require the "robust mobilisation of private capital". Italy, France, Germany and Poland will participate in the new EU equity fund, which Brussels says will have an initial capital of 220 million euros and aims to mobilise 500 million euros by 2026. "The message we want to send to entrepreneurs today is simple: do not be afraid to invest... to rebuild in Ukraine," Meloni said. She insisted it was "not a gamble, it is an investment in a nation that has shown more resilience than any other".

SK On wins global cyber safety nod for EV battery

SK On announced Thursday that it has obtained an international Cyber Security Assessment for its battery management system, becoming the first company in Korea to receive such certification for an automotive controller. The CSA was awarded by TUV Rheinland, a leading global testing and certification organization, and is based on the ISO/SAE 21434 standard, which outlines best practices for managing cyber security risks in automotive systems. In addition, SK On also received a Level 3 Functional Safety Management System certification under ISO 26262, which evaluates a company's ability to manage functional safety throughout the entire product lifecycle from design through to production and post-deployment. The certified battery management system will be supplied to a major European automaker, along with SK On's battery cells and modules. Both certifications position the company to meet growing international regulatory requirements, including UN Regulation No. 155, which mandates certified cyber security systems for new vehicles sold in 56 countries, including those in the EU, North America and Asia. 'These certifications not only demonstrate the technological strength of our BMS but also affirm SK On's capabilities in managing cyber security and functional safety on a global scale,' said Ko Jeong-woon, head of system generic technology development at SK On. 'We plan to gradually expand the application of these certified solutions in collaboration with major global automakers.'
