Did AIFF use Xavi's name to lure top applicants for India coach role?
New Delhi
When news broke about Xavi Hernandez applying for the India football head coach's job, fans expressed their disappointment that his application would not be considered, as the All India Football Federation (AIFF) could not afford him.
The incident echoed a similar sentiments from two years ago, when Argentina's football governing body approached the AIFF for a friendly match featuring superstar Lionel Messi. India had turned down the proposal, citing financial constraints.
At the time, Messi fans called for a crowdfunding campaign to bring him to India. A similar sentiment resurfaced when Xavi's name emerged in connection with the national coaching role.
However, Spanish media reports have claimed that Xavi never expressed interest in coaching India.
'Sources close to Xavi completely deny that he offered himself to manage the Indian national team. They claim the Indian federation used his name to try and appeal to better candidates,' Barça Universal posted on social media platform X.

Meanwhile, world-renowned football journalist Fabrizio Romano also denied the reports being circulated in India. He wrote on X, 'Despite recent reports, zero talks took place between Xavi Hernandez and Indian Federation.'

News agency PTI quoted an AIFF official as saying, 'He (Xavi) applied for the job of the Indian senior men's team football head coach. He has himself mailed his application to the people in the technical committee, and it looks like he was very much interested in the job. However, those tasked with the responsibility of recommending the shortlist of coaches to the executive committee for final approval know that it's difficult.'
Who has applied for the India football coach job?
Three shortlisted by AIFF panel
The experienced Anglo-Cypriot Stephen Constantine, Slovakia's Stefan Tarkovic, and Indian coach Khalid Jamil were the three candidates shortlisted on Wednesday by the All India Football Federation's (AIFF) technical committee.
Jamil emerges as frontrunner
Among the shortlisted names, Khalid Jamil appears to be the frontrunner to succeed Manolo Marquez, who stepped down earlier this month following a string of disappointing results. India's FIFA ranking has since dropped to 133—its lowest in nine years.
AIFF received 170 applications
The AIFF had invited applications for the top job on July 4, with a deadline of July 13. A total of 170 candidates applied, including several high-profile names such as former Liverpool stars Robbie Fowler and Harry Kewell.
Big names expressed interest before Xavi
Before news surfaced about Xavi Hernandez's application, Fowler and Kewell had already thrown their hats into the ring for the India coaching position.
Xavi's achievements as player and coach
World Cup and Euro champion with Spain
Xavi Hernandez was a central figure in Spain's golden era, winning the 2010 FIFA World Cup and back-to-back UEFA Euro titles in 2008 and 2012.
Club legend with Barcelona

Five La Liga titles
Three Copa del Rey trophies
Three UEFA Champions League titles
He was instrumental in Barcelona's historic continental trebles in 2008–09 and 2014–15.
From La Masia to global stardom
A product of Barcelona's famed La Masia academy—like his legendary teammate Lionel Messi—Xavi made over 750 appearances for the club during a 24-year playing career. He left Barcelona as a player in 2015 to join Qatar's Al Sadd, where he won four trophies before retiring in 2019.
Coaching career: From Qatar to Catalonia
After hanging up his boots, Xavi began his managerial journey with Al Sadd from 2019 to 2021. He then returned to FC Barcelona as head coach, serving from 2021 to 2024.
During his time in charge, Barcelona won:
The 2022–23 La Liga title

Ben Stokes Labelled 'Spoilt Kid', Brutally Criticised For Bowling Harry Brook After 'Handshake' Row
Former England captain Nasser Hussain termed Ben Stokes' decision to bring Harry Brook into the attack after India declined his offer to end the fourth Test early as 'silly', stating that Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar fully deserved their centuries. Jadeja and Washington were batting on 89 and 80 respectively before the start of the last hour of play when England skipper Ben Stokes, aware that a result was out of reach, offered to shake hands. However, with milestones around the corner, the Indian batters refused, which didn't amuse Stokes, who then introduced Brook into the attack to bowl some deliberate full-tosses, allowing both to complete their well-deserved tons. "I didn't have a problem with it. England seemed to have a problem with it. They were a bit tired, tired bowlers so they wanted to get off but two lads worked hard to get to 80s and 90s and they wanted to get Test match hundreds," Hussain said on 'Sky Sports'. "Stokes didn't have to bowl Brook and look silly at the end. We make far too much of these things. They played well and all credit to India," Hussain said. When Cheteshwar Pujara asked the same question to Washington Sundar, he sidestepped the issue. "I think everyone saw on TV what happened and they all must have enjoyed it," Washington said on JioHotstar. Former India batter Sanjay Manjrekar felt that Indian batters were well within their rights to continue unless there was an agreement prior that match will be called off before start of last hour of play. "I think Ben Stokes in the end behaved like a spoilt kid," Manjrekar said on 'JioHotstar'. "I would like to see what England would have done if two of their batsmen were nearing Test hundreds?"

Sourav Ganguly Gives Clear Verdict On India-Pakistan Clash In Asia Cup 2025: "Can't Let..."
Former India captain Sourav Ganguly on Sunday said he has no issues with India being placed in the same group as Pakistan in the upcoming Asia Cup, asserting that while terrorism must end, sport must continue. As per the schedule, arch-rivals India and Pakistan are clubbed in Group A and are set to face off at the Dubai International Stadium on September 14. "I'm okay with the schedule. Sport must continue. What happened in Pahalgam should never happen, but we can't let that stop the game. Terrorism must end. India has taken a firm stand against it, it's in the past now. Sport must go on," Ganguly told PTI. The T20 tournament will be held in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) from September 9 to 28. India will begin their campaign against UAE on September 10 and are expected to play all their matches in Dubai. India and Pakistan could also meet again in the Super Four stage on September 21. Group A comprises India, Pakistan, UAE and Oman, while Group B includes Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Afghanistan and Hong Kong. #WATCH | Kolkata: On India-Pakistan placed in the same group in the Asia Cup, former Indian cricketer Saurav Ganguly says, "I am okay. The sport must go on. At the same time Pahalgam should not happen, but the sport must go on. Terrorism must not happen; it needs to be stopped.… — ANI (@ANI) July 27, 2025 The Asian Cricket Council (ACC) will allow 17-member squads for the 19-match tournament, with matches scheduled in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. While the BCCI is the official host, the tournament is being held in the UAE as India and Pakistan have agreed to play only at neutral venues till 2027 due to ongoing cross-border tensions. The two countries had come close to the brink of war following the Pahalgam attack, to which India responded with Operation Sindoor.

"Would England Have Walked Off...": Gautam Gambhir's Blunt Take On 'Handshake' Row
Indian cricket team head coach Gautam Gambhir gave his blunt verdict on the 'handshake' controversy on Day 5 of the fourth Test match between India and England at Old Trafford on Sunday. England skipper Ben Stokes offered to end the match in a draw with 15 overs left on Day 5. However, Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar were close to their centuries and India decided to not accept the 'handshake' at that moment. Stokes was not happy but play continued and both Jadeja as well as Sundar was able to slam centuries. Gambhir completely supported the decision to not take the draw at the point and questioned whether England would have left the field if their players were on verge of hundreds. 'If someone's batting on 90 and another on 85, don't they deserve their centuries? Would England have walked off if their own players were close to milestones? No. Our boys weathered the storm. They earned those tons. We're not here to please anyone,' Gambhir said at the post-match press conference. Meanwhile, Gill lauded the batting effort of his side after salvaging a draw in the fourth Test against England and backed the decision to not accept Ben Stokes' offer to end the game early, saying Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar deserved to complete their centuries. India, who started their second innings 311 runs behind, produced a spirited batting display to finish on 425 for four in 143 overs, with Gill (103), KL Rahul (90), Jadeja (107 not out) and Washington (101 not out) leading the resistance. There was a brief moment of drama in the final hour when England skipper Stokes proposed ending the contest early, with both Indian batters approaching individual milestones. But the offer was turned down, allowing Jadeja and Washington to reach their hundreds. 'Definitely it was up to the boys, but we thought they batted brilliantly. Both of them were in their 90s, so we thought they deserved a century,' Gill said at the post-match presentation. India were reduced to 0 for two early in their second innings after openers Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sai Sudharsan fell without scoring, but the middle-order stood firm under pressure. "With our batting effort, the past couple of days I think we were put under a lot of pressure. But I think the way we responded, especially after losing those two early wickets, never easy but a very brave effort," Gill said. "It's all about taking the wicket out of the equation. Day five wicket, the ball is doing, something is happening, every ball is kind of an event. So you just want to play ball by ball and want to take the game as deep as possible."
